You do know what will happen, either two things:

1) he does well and fans gloat that the club found a golden nugget from a sea of overpriced players.

2) he does not so well and the fans blame the board for not spending enough money compared to their rivals.

I don't think they are any other possibilities though, are there? It's a transfer can go either way.

I just saw their sub on reddit. They're over the moon with 18 mill and they say he has potential and that it's good business for a kid who has had only one good season under his belt.
hmm a bit concerning that.

hmm a bit concerning that.

I just checked their sub reddit and they're positive about him:

Delighted for him. Bags of potential and will definitely benefit from the first class training at Utd. Sad to see him go but can't turn down money like that for a kid with a year left on his contract who has only had one good season under his belt.
Obviously gutted about his departure, but I wish him all the best at Utd, he's going to be a top talent in the future and think he could tear it up in the prem

And that 18 mil will go nicely towards our debt and stabilising the club
Honestly I accepted he was leaving so I’m glad he’s picked a big club instead of a mediocre club like Leeds, his father would be so proud. All the best Dan!

Has he played games out on the left as an inverted forward or as a traditional winger? He seems to have a decent left foot atleast from the little I've seen even if it's his weaker foot. Does he get much games out right? Not seen much of him but looks traditional to me either way. Just a tad question - do you think Sancho is traditional too or is it just me?

I think either one can play equally well on either side, however with James, goal scoring (so far) doesn't seem to be what he's all about. I'd like to see him on the right keeping the width and taking his man wide, getting to the byline, and either crossing or cut back passes. Personally, I am very excited about this signing. From the little I've seen of him he looks like a traditional winger who will get some goals, but most likely set up a lot as well...

Or he does just ok, and spends ten years on our bench getting pay rises.

The article also states including bonuses, not untrue, but click baity. By Kajumba who broke the story, so probably true.

Wish I could switch companies for that kind of pay rise!

Probably about in line with other squad players I guess. Wonder what our youth players earn?

Breakthrough player's contracts are now capped at £20k a week. Think Januzaj and Wilson were given +£20k contracts after breaking through and it was perceived as being one of the reasons they stopped working hard on their game so an unofficial cap was introduced.

Not at ManUtd and he won't be earning 75K if he signs for ManUtd. Big club with biggest revenues will always pay big money.
Sure, but it's not like we're competing with many clubs for his signature and if he doesn't work would be tough to move him on those wages, just look at Darmian.

He's coming from the Championship, not a star player.

30-40k per week is more than enough. I doubt he'll get them anywhere else as well.

Probably, although I hope if he doesn't do so well people could take option 3, which is to accept the club took a relatively cheap punt on an up-and-coming player, it didn't work out, and the chances of moving him on for good money are still high.

I'd love to take option 1 though, taking young players and making them stars should be what this club is all about.

Darmian's wages is not a problem, someone paying his transfer fee is. He is on low wages.

So 30-40K is enough but 67K (including all the possible bonuses) is more? This is just complaining for the sake of it. Hardly a big difference when most of it are bonus

Yeah, Darmian wasn't good example, but Rojo is - currently at 80k.

All I'm saying is that a 4k jump to 67k is a lot more that we should be paying championship prospects.

We are complaining that Herrera asked a lot of money yet we will give someone 67k per week without kicking a football at premiership level.

Rojo is earning way more than 100K.

This is from telegraph and there are reports that he earns more than 150K.

Rojo, who earns more than £120,000-a-week, has not linked up with the rest of the United squad in the USA even though Argentina were knocked out of the World Cup in the Round of 16 more than three weeks ago.

Again this is including all the bonuses. For example, Lukaku gets 4 million bonus if he gets 50 goals + assists according to leaks. So who knows what performance and team achievements should be met to pay full 67K.

What he earned at Swansea doesnt matter, this is not your regular job where you get 20-30% hike on your CTC. He will be compared to squad players at ManUtd and paid according to that.

Wow when did that happen(re Rojo)? DIdn't he sign extension last year at 80k? :wenger:

They have him at 80k:

We pay an obscene amount of money in wages and one of the top in the world, yet our squad is nowhere close to being that. I know the United premium, but he will be earning more straight off the bat than the likes of Casemiro, Lucas Vasquez, etc if we believe the above reports of course.

Again if a young player like him earns 60-70k with bonuses then the reports of Herrera wanting 150-200k doesn't seem unreasonable does it?

Option 3) Hangs around Pogba/Martial/Lukaku and ends up holding the club to ransom

Casemiro signed his contract in 2015 when he was signed back from Porto, surprisingly he is still on the same contract and there are reports that it was a worrying sign that he wasn't renewed. If you go by the examples then there are reports that 16 year old Odegaard was paid 80K per week.

Rojo signed extension and reports that he is on more than 100K. (120-160K are reported)

Also reason Herrera didn't sign was not just because he wanted 150k-200K, it was also because he wanted bigger contract length, BBC reported he wanted pay inline with highest earners at club and also Herrera was pissed because of the lack of communication. Not sure why this is even discussed, Herrera wanting hike is not a mistake or a problem, there are many other factors too.

Like I said, no one knows what his base wage is and on what factors he will be paid bonus.

Eriksen is 75k per week. Just saying.
Eriksen is trying to leave to earn a lot more.

We could probably have paid him less. But I think it makes sense not to have huge wage disparities in the squad if possible. Let him feel valued and not be looking at the likes of Rojo and Darmian earning much more for doing literally nothing.

I sincerely hope that the story is bullshit, it's a ridiculous amount to pay someone who has done nothing. Let him prove himself before he gets the big money, otherwise we get the same problem we get with other players who think they have made it before actually doing anything to earn their salary and take their foot off the gas. Why should he bother now, he's going from earning £200K to earning £3.5M a year? Too easy, for him.

What if the salary is good will since their household would have lost their dad’s income and it’s mainly performance related? There are a number of reasons it could be what it is. There’s no way he’s just getting 67k a week base.

As above. To me he has done nothing so far to deserve such wages. At least Darmian, Rojo, etc came from clubs which played at top level in their countries.

Everybody complains that the players don't show enough passion and most of the time are just there for collecting their checks who are a lot bigger than they will be earning elsewhere.

Yet we are offering a player who has played 33 games so far in his career in Championship close to 70k per week even with bonuses and is no reason to concern?

You have no idea what the base is, so no it’s not really a concern.

No, like @SteveW said it's better not to have huge disparity in the squad and he won't be Championship player, he will be squad player for ManUtd and he is getting paid accordingly.

You are buying potential. Speculate to accumulate. Absolutely nothing guaranteed but if he makes it then £18m and £67k per week is peanuts.

No one, including me and you, knows the answer yet.

I think we need to get away from the idea of trying to buy players motivation.

It shouldnt be about money for these guys.

my point is if he starts to perform he will be either way on a 4-5 years contract already. We could offer him extension even in the first year after showing promise.

Yes, which was my concern initially. We shouldn't offer top wages for players that haven't earned them yet.

You forget the guy had other offers. If Brighton offered him 50k a week then we would have to beat that fee.

60k really isn't that much for an attacking player at united.
