Daniel James | Officially Signs

I never said he didn't buy anything but only he bought few in his 20 years + career. Also our side was stronger then it is now as well.

The Championship is a lot stronger now as well. As are the teams in the lower reaches of the PL. Who saw Robertson coming? Maddison has tripled in value over a year!

A sign of the times that we hang onto news about signing a Championship player!

Hopefully, we make him world-class!
Don't think anyone was "hanging on to the news" but whatever. Fact remains though that there's no pleasing people. Half the time, folks crib about why our scouts miss emerging talents like Maddison, Maguire, Robertson etc. when they're cheap - and when we identify them, people yearn for superstar signings...

This is a fun signing. I like it. And for all of you complaining about a championship signing I just have one thing, or name, to say: Angel di Maria.

Positive steps, he looks decent in the highlight reels i've seen.
You can't just sign a squad of £100+ superstars, you need to sign potential, promote potential.
Welcome DJ.

If you have a solid first team then this is the type of signing that intrigues you. When your squad is a shit show of inconsistency and professionalism then its abit meh for me. How is he expected to perform and get used to a squad dynamic thats full of cliques and mediocre players who can’t be professional enough to put in the effort week in week out.

Happy with this, he will want to be a success with us and hopefully will work his arse off to make sure that happens, that's all I can ever ask for. Had enough of players like Di MAria and Sanchez coming in for massive money and not being arsed.

Every successful journey begins with but a single step. Hopefully this is ours. Tomorrow the sky could fall on our heads so why worry?

I only see positives in this signing. From the video clips we've seen, it's obvious that he isn't one dimensional like Martial.
Well done United, now let's get Maddison signed up

I think the championship is at a much higher quality than it has been for some time, but I mean more in that old mold of all of the caf wanting whatever player is flavour of the month and we get someone they would never have thought of. Admittedly we've known about it for a few weeks now but before then the would have been the last name on anyone's lips. I really really rate the lad. He makes me think of a speeded up Overmars. What I'm hoping is, is that Ole and the team know the system they want to play and are instead of getting great names that don't fit it will get the players that will make it work. We've had plenty of Galacticos lately. Lets get back to making them instead.

First of all let me clear 2 things.

a- If we sign him up I wish that he'll succeed. Not only because he'll be a United player but also because of his recent family tragedy.
b- This has nothing to do with James but I hope Id avoid attracting unwanted attention on this. I am glad you're back in the forum.

Anyway this is what I wrote about him on 30th May. I think its very balanced from my part

I have mixed feelings about this deal. The Pros and cons of signing him up are pretty much even in my books

Lets start from the cons. His stats are hardly impressive and his technique seems limited for an EPL winger. However, blistering pace can paper alot of cracks and if you add that to workrate then he can be quite a valuable player if used correctly. Having said that I do wonder why we're signing a winger like him, who lets face it, is hardly a world beater when we've already got Gomes and Chong in that category. The latter might not have the experience James does but they are certainly more talented.

So I have mixed feelings about this deal.

I am not a big fan of the Galacticos style myself although to be fair we never really used that route either. Real used to get top players in their prime, players btw who were even willing to take a lesser offer just to sign with them. We signed had beens who were either already a spent force (Sanchez, Bastian, Valdes, Falcao) or who came at United for the wrong reason (ADM). The only galactico I can think off that we had signed was Pogba. I think he was a success for us.

My 2 big concerns are that either Ole is not able to attract the players we need or he's being too idealistic. I find both concerns to be fair and legitimate. Since we lack a DOF, our club is heavily reliant on the manager to put his reputation on the line and attract players. Mou did that successfully with Lukaku and Pogba while LVG brought some Dutch players. Moyes struggled on that since he wasn't a big name and Ole is a rookie compared to Moyesy. The latter comment is fair as well. Ole was accused of being an idealist at Cardiff bringing in players who were clearly not ready for the EPL just yet when the club needed tough guys to keep them afloat. I am aware that United aren't Cardiff. However similarly to Cardiff results are important. If Ole won't get the results he'll be out

I'll never forgive Di Maria for hiw sub appearance in the 0-1 home loss to WBA at the end of the LVG era. The guy was deliberately balooning the ball into the Stretford end rather than put a proper cross in. I'd never seen such a blatent show of deliberate ineptitude from a professional footballer before until I watched Martial waddle slowly back five times in a row in a single match after carelessly giving the ball away cheaply for the 1000th time in his United career.

Feels like the sort of signing Fergie would approve of and Jose would despise

Reckon he'll win us a few penalties next season

We did something! Hope he turns out to be a huge bargain, though I'd guess he will just be depth on the wings (him simply being able to play as a winger on the right is a plus though).

That's quite a fair comment and I agree with it

He is very welcome here. I think he'll turn out to be a good signing if he doesn't get ruined with injuries which wouldn't surprise me as we seem cursed with them. Now we need to move on quickly and get in more.

Very pleased by this move. People seem to forget Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Dele Alli etc were signed from lower division teams. Apparently we're being quoted £60m to sign James Maddison, we could've signed him a year ago for a fraction of that.

We need to stop turning up at the party after all the food is gone and the booze is drunk. We used to be good at picking up bargains like Chicharito. Now we're often scratching our heads wondering how Liverpool have picked up a Robertson while we've pissed away cash on a Rojo or Darmian.

This kid has lightning pace, which is a big part of the equation in the Premier League. I'll be delighted if he can be something like Andrei Kanchelskis or even Valencia c.2010-2012.

Yeah no real downside to this deal. If he fails it doesn't matter.

Liverpool fans use to say that back in the early nineties and look how they fare since the introduction of the PL, haven't spent 100-150 million less than us in the 27yrs since then and with the mismanaging in purchasing players since before AF left we need to get our act together now

Well if this deal ends up being a shit signing it's fair to say our scouts need scrapping.

Nah. This is a low risk punt on a player with upside.

I can think of plenty of other reasons to start sacking scouts though

Same goes for a certain England defender at Leicester as well...

Delighted with this signing. Such a breath of fresh air signing compared to last season, when we were wondering if it would be William or Ante Rebic who would be signed, and tasked with thumping in 100 crosses per game in to Lukaku.

Thank you, I'm trying to get back more into the caf. After losing myself in social media, I've learnt that I enjoyed the caf more so trying to get back into it.

I'm not looking at this as the type of signing that ole can attract, for me our biggest stumbling block there is the loss of champions League. Next season will be the test to see what type of players he can attract. If he has a good season and we see true progress then we'll see. I'm hoping more though that we create a system first that works, James though at that low a price is definitely worth a punt. I believe he will be a good squad player who if he pushes himself has the chance to become a whole lot more.

It’s a low risk punt if he’s brought as a squad player with potential to grow but I fear he’s our answer to the right winger problem.

We need ready made improvements to the starting 11
