Daniel James | Officially Signs

He's a winger coming from the championship. We should be looking at wingers of the reputation of the likes of Mane, Sane and Salah when they moved to City/Liverpool. In my opinion anyway, not against signing young, promising players but we need to seriously strengthen.

These two didn't have big reputations before they moved, they improved at Liverpool. With good coaching there's no reason why James can't improve.

Without wanting to put unnecessary expectations on him, I think it's a fair expectation that he should become our best ever Welsh winger.

Would it be considered wumming and negative if I'd say that I can't see him becoming as good as Ryan Giggs?

I’m all for this signing as it’s nice to see us not just throwing money at an expensive toy that we don’t need and simply buy just because instead of them fitting into an actual style or system, I don’t think we’ve actually bought a winger since Valencia back in 2009 which is fecking ridiculous when you think about it.

Signing young, hungry players with potential that want to win things and be the best is exactly the way we need to go. Players like James, Wan Bissaka, Sancho, De Ligt, Rice, Dias, Felix (at the right price), Maddison, Chilwell, Tierney are ones I want to see us go after and we have a core group in Rashford, Martial, Lindelof, McTominay and Tuanzebe of similar ages.

Is he? I don't remember Sir Alex buying alot of players from the Championship. I don't mind us signing him up to be honest if used in the right context. I wrote my views about this signing and anyone bothering reading them up would find them to be pretty balanced. However as I said in that post I'm genuinely concerned about Ole's ability to attract the players we need at the club. If that is rated as wumming and as too negative for the people in here's taste then oh well.

He bought Zaha from the championship.

James can improve and it’s a good signing hopefully for the future.

But people are also correct in saying we need to sign players who will get in our first team. James should be our only squad player type signing this summer. The rest should be players that we expect to walk in our first team.

Well he can. Anyway I'm fairly hopeful this guy isn't being signed as a first choice and we've got Dalot and Chong already for the RW. I don't think he's going to be thrown in just because he's quick.

Send him on loan to a lower PL team and let him adjust with less pressure.

I think it incredibly unlikely that he's less ready than Chong given the evidence of their careers to date.

A sign of the times that we hang onto news about signing a Championship player!

Hopefully, we make him world-class!

What he means is, we should have waited until Southampton/Everton bought him, played him for a year in the premier league and tripled his transfer value.

That way we could buy him for £60m and it would sound like a sexier deal than £15m.

Top logic :D

Dont have much issue with signings like this one. Regardless, still believe that in our current situation with a squad and all things behind it, getting new players will do feck all for us.

Finding a bit funny that people wonder how he will develop, since SAF what player that was bought we developed and raised the value of it.

Anyway, welcome to the club kid, wish you all the best.

I think his stats of 5 goals and 10 assists are pretty good considering it was his first full professional season. His pace obviously his main asset but that shows that he has the cutting edge to match it. The only worrying thing for me would be that he didn’t have his first run in any side until now. Obviously there are late bloomers so he could be one of them and it’s a minor worry overall. I think he’ll be good for you as he will have the right mentality due to that.

Come on, they had much bigger reputations. Yes they made the step up, but Daniel James would need to make a far more drastic step up.

Young, fast, decent dribbling ability, can cross with both feet, likes to link up and at a decent price. Should be a good squad player who hopefully gets better and better.

I'm excited about this signing, but slightly concerned that he will score a goal in September and immediately become "King James" before signing with Raiola and looking to renegotiate his contract.

If he shows good form starting in pre-season, then he will play more games than some of you think. Martial needs to start performing or else I foresee a clamour for this kid starting over him.

Love the thought of a Welshman in United's team, if he anything turns out like the last Welshman to play on the wing for Utd then I'll be very happy.

Having martial work hard to keep his place in the team would be good thing. Considering the only option as of now is Mr. Piano Man

Can't wait for the minute he signs so I can immediately call him over-hyped deadwood shit and create a thread about how he symbolises all that is wrong with the club.

I think the championship is at a much higher quality than it has been for some time, but I mean more in that old mold of all of the caf wanting whatever player is flavour of the month and we get someone they would never have thought of. Admittedly we've known about it for a few weeks now but before then the would have been the last name on anyone's lips. I really really rate the lad. He makes me think of a speeded up Overmars. What I'm hoping is, is that Ole and the team know the system they want to play and are instead of getting great names that don't fit it will get the players that will make it work. We've had plenty of Galacticos lately. Lets get back to making them instead.

The competion for places is something we've lacked and some of our players have taken spots in the team for granted. Luke Shaw also needs competition and i'd like to see us test Celtic's resolve.

It scares me when our own fans are negative to us signing a lightning quick 21 year old like Daniel James. Granted he is not Ronaldo, but he looks to have a very efficient technique where he uses his extreme pace and movement to go past players.

£15 million for a player like that is nothing - if he does well his value will be 3 times that in 6 months, if he flops - there will still be clubs in the Championship or at the bottom of the Premier League who will pay us the same £15 million. It's not even a gamble to quote Big Ron

Our first genuine winger in God knows how many years. What's not to like about this deal?

Signing an inconsistent youngster to add to our list of inconsistent youngsters. Let's see how this pans out but it's fair to say many will be a little nervy about this signing.

That said, I am a little excited to see how he plays. Knowing very little about him helps in that regards.

Yeah cos Liverpool never signed players from Championship teams... Shaqiri, Robertson, Gomez anyone?

I am all for this signing and I think we should make 1-2 signing like this every season but I really hope James has something more than pace only otherwise he will really struggle against teams that play deep, like most of the teams do against us (or at least did when we were relevant).
