Pressed effectively, constantly looked for the ball, gave Chelsea a few anxious moments. I thought that was one of his better games. Not sure if you actually saw the game.
Watched the whole thing, so same as every other game, best moments were when he didn’t have the ball....exactly what I look for in a winger :wenger:

Did more than any of the big names today. We know what he is and he is performing well for what we expect of him. He’s not first choice but is a good lad and good option for something different. Fingers need pointing at Rashford, Bruno and Greenwood today.
What does he offer different in our attack?

Makes Antonio Valencia look world class!!!

Imagine we use to have one footed productive Valencia. Now we have this. Can’t pass Dan James.

Put in a good ball which Greenwood should have been quicker to react to. He was also kicked around by Chelsea players throughout.
You mean the ball that was too close to the keeper? Because he again almost ran himself off the pitch and couldn’t create enough angle
He once again offered very little and is looking ok because rashford and martial are playing awful

Doesn’t matter, the “well x player didn’t do anything either” reply is pointless
James offered nothing on the ball rashford was crap.
Well in that case we are in serious trouble as he was one of our best players today

Think Ole's main mistake was starting James today. He's excellent in certain matches and gives absolutely everything but we needed more quality. Martial up top and Greenwood on the right would have given Mason more space to get into the game and us more quality. He also would have been good coming off the bench later in the game.

Martial is a total waste of space. James is poor, he wasn't the worst player on the pitch today. But at least he tries unlike the lazy, mopy, disinterested Martial.

At some point he's going to get injured, if he isn't protected soonish. Absolutely ridiculous what opposition players get away with.

Like Fellaini he has the workrate, but I don't think he'll ever be good enough.

Can't believe all the so called fans giving him grief for supposedly not being good enough. He may not have the required quality in the long term but deserves to play ahead of Martial on current form.

He was better than most of his team mates so direct your frustrations there.

We did not buy Sancho whilst Amad is being eased in so get behind the lad.

The stick he gets no wonder he struggled for confidence and form.

Boring. He would have been a better striker than Greenwood and Greenwood a better RW than James.

Not based on this season, not for anyone with eyes.

Greenwood has been pretty atrocious on the RW, he has played 33 games and has only 4 goals to show for it (a position from which he scored bucket loads last season). James is on 5 goals in under half the games. He also offers considerably more work rate than Greenwood. That's not necessarily a praise for James' season, just pointing out that Greenwood has been diabolical and in no way justifies his selection at the moment ahead of anyone.

I understand where you're coming from but there had been a recent up tick in form from Greenwood and he's been dribbling the ball well whilst also putting in some very dangerous crosses. I felt we needed more quality in attack because Chelsea are very well organised under Tuchel and it's always going to be difficult for players with limited ability in tight spaces to have a real impact on the game.

Can't believe some of the negative comments about him on here. He's just gone 23 years old a few months ago.

He's a Jose Mourinho wet dream. He's a defensive winger who never gives less than 100%. He's got that Man Utd DNA of always giving his best and someone who feels honoured to play for us.

He's improving all the time, will get better and better, and can eventually become our new Jesper Blomqvist/Ji Sung Park/Quinton Fortune/Antonio Valencia etc One of those grafters on the wing who can play certain games where we need to defend, can be used to give first teamers a rest in less important games, while also being a good option to come on in certain games for the last 30 mins.

Putting crosses in the box and hoping Martial gets on the end of them, is like plucking 7 lucky numbers and hoping for a euromillions win. It might happen one day and we'll sure make DVDs of it and tell our grandchildren about it, but it's really not a solid plan of attack. With Martial leading the line you have to feed him ball to feet if you want to maintain any hopes of him scoring.

If Cavani was leading the line I might have understood, but he wasn't. So it's better for me to have James who will run into the box with the ball a few times and the ball might break to someone else to finish. Plus in games like these you also don't want to be played off the park or lose. Which means making the effort to win the ball back and to protect your fullback, which James did excellently did today if nothing else.

Finally there's the part of showing Martial that his abject performances won't be tolerated much longer. There has to come a point where you have to say that trying to play him into form simply doesn't work and maybe showing him the cold shoulder will work better. It's certainly worth trying. I honestly don't feel we missed anything today compared to the other big games this season when Martial started. Same shit if anything.

It’s funny you get people complaining about Martial’s attitude and he gets dropped , James plays , covers the most ground of any player and probably one of the best players we had out there and there’s comments he’s not good enough, Martial should have started and we should have had Greenwood on the right . If Martial had started he would have been at the bottom of metres covered during the game. Let Martial sulk on the bench for a while longer James has done in and has been a better option than Martial.

I've watch Amad in both U23 games, he wouldn't have closed down players as much as James did today.

To the point for me he was my MOTM, was better than Rashford today on the other wing.
This is exactly my point. That we now think running around and closing down of players are what a United RW should be measured on.

Yes. Greenwood had actually beaten his man to the front post but our expectations about our RW are so low that what was actually a missed chance because of a bad ball to the keeper from our RW (his one positive attacking involvement in the game) is now seen as good.

The kid was okey, and did a shift, our big stars in Rashford and Bruno, did feck all when it mattered, they are the ones that should win you this kind of games.

Not really, at this stage anyone who thinks Martial should be playing really need to consider why they should continue to watch football.

We are talking about Dan James. It’s like Ryan Giggs having poor form and Phil Neville coming in and we all agreeing Giggs needs to relax.

Great post.
Still very young and a lot to learn. We don’t really know his potential yet, he looked really good in the beginning of his United career, some nice goals and assists. Played every game and lost form completely. He needed the time off and you can see his hard work in training paid off. Still raw but with the mentality he has who knows what he will become at United.
Not his best game yesterday but his effort and constant pressing helped the team a lot.

I think our attack is shocking yes, he’s part of the reason, maybe he played well for him but shows that even when he is playing well he has very little impact on the game

He is our fifth choice isn't he? He plays because we have one ore two out of form. Rashford scores but the workreight is quite poor. Martial is not getting mutch out of his game. And Greenwood is in the start of kind of finding himself again. Cavani is injured.
James is working his socks of but isn't a player to start a game in Man Utd, I don't think Ole really want him on the pitch if he had a choose.

In the bigger games it is a problem that we don't have a attacking winger that also track back naturally (except James). And a CM that is abitt week, plus two CB that can't keep it clean in front of them without support from WB ore/and CM.
When our hi press fail its so easy to play through our central midfield and out to the wingers behind our defenders. On top of that we are poor in defending when balls coming in between our keeper and defenders.

Interesting to see how the board and Ole handling the transfers in the sommerwindow. My worries is that Ole is happy with MacFred and MacLöf, and put all the 60 mill on the wrong horse.

I think Ole played him yesterday as he combines with AWB far better than anyone else you have on the right wing, especially defensively.

He was picked, IMO, to help contain Rudiger, Chilwell and Mount playing down that wing and given that your full backs were pressing so high up the pitch, it was crucial that AWB had that defensive help from James. In fact your team pressed higher yesterday than I've seen this season and again this is something that James is very good at. It's noticable as well that these are aspects of the game that Greenwood does not have and if Greenwood had been played out to the right you could well have been overrun down that side of the pitch.

I'd agree with many that James is not an outstanding winger in the vein that you've had over the years like Beckham, Ronaldo, Kanchelskis or Olsen, but he is a very useful player and offers something that no one else at the club does in that position at the moment. Hs output in terms of goals has definitely improved this season and I think you could argue that his dip in assists compared to last year is as much down to your other forwards dipping in form as it is his own game.

EPL 2020/21 - 9 games 3 goals 0 assists
EPL 2019/20 - 33 games 3 goals 6 assists

James gets a lot of stick that he does not deserve and he's definitely improving as a player, he's not nailed on first team material, but as a member of the squad he is extremely useful and is far more than the kick and run merchant many seem to see.

I was replying to a comment that Martial should have played ahead of James. Based on form he shouldn't be anywhere near the team, James is actually doing alright and puts in more effort than Martial.

Using Giggs and Phil Neville as a comparison is totally stupid, Giggs had his slumps but he maintained a consistently high level. Martial is a patchy player, he might have one good game and be total crap for 6 or 7. And Phil Neville was was a far better footballer than both Martial and James.

Phil Neville is not a better footballer than Martial. Phil Neville would tell you that personally himself.

The point remains Dan James is not good enough for these big games no matter how much he runs around like a headless chicken only to lose the ball. You might as-well play with 10 men.

I’m sure your school team had that one kid who would run up and down but couldn’t pass. It’s not productive it’s just annoying to play with.

He was the only player who at least could cross once sending a great pass, what other players on the pitch did? From both sides, I do not understand why people want to humiliate this young lad

And we all played with the lazy guy who wouldn't run, or move or make any effort at all. But might score the odd decent goal and would play relentlessly because of what he potentially could do. Which is equally as annoying to play with.

Martial is extremely talented, way more so than Phil Neville. In terms of having a football brain, application of ability and effort Phil Neville was a far better player than Martial.

James at the minute deserves to play ahead of him, he offers more than Martial, more effort, more running and more of a goal threat. Which is more of a reflection on how poor he has been rather than how well James is playing.

Martial is hardly Ryan Giggs though is he. He's more like a horribly out of form Berbatov.

James is in better form than Martial at the moment. He's playing better than Martial at the moment. He's more of a goal threat at the moment. He played a big part in our high press in the first half which allowed us to control the tempo of the game.

I'm a Martial fan, but he absolutely should be sitting on the bench most of the time at the moment. Not just because others are playing better than him, but the hope is that him having to fight for his spot might kick him back into form again. We've tried having him as a constant starter and hoping he could play his way out of it and that hasn't worked. Maybe this will.
