If a person and his inner circle want things to stay hidden they can and no prospective business partner would think to do extensive background checks like that because there is a certain level of professionalism you would expect from a person at a certain level.

Just absolute bollocks. You can very much hide addiction. As someone whose parent died from an addiction and was an addict themselves you very much can hide addiction from people. In terms of gambling surely you’ve heard of stories of spouses suddenly finding out their partner has gambled away their savings without knowing. There are a lot of high functioning addicts. You only really see it when they’re on the way to hitting rock bottom.
This is mad. Addicts hide their reality from their inner circle EASILY. The trust they have makes it simple. Some people do it for years. I’ve seen it. People have confessed 3-7 year addictions to me. Had no idea.

Just to corroborate, Ornstein said more or less the same thing regarding Ashworth in a Q&A yesterday. They've hired headhunters and are at an 'advanced stage' I think it was, with their stance expected to soften once they had someone lined up.
This kinda makes sense but also it doesn’t. The man is on gardening leave so has as good as left NUFC already, they are effectively without a DOF so why would they need a replacement before the ‘impasse’ is broken? Or is this more BJ waffle?

Because eventually you will need to be reasonable and be seen to be reasonable. These things have a way of coming back to haunt you when you least expect them to because everyone else watching and someone will remember and base their choice against joining you on the reputation you would have created for yourself over nothing more than hurt pride.
We want and need him in but not to the extent of paying outrageous sums of money. We have made a contingency plan for the summer, it's in action and we can roll like that for however long you intend to hold him to his notice. It's difficult to know what actually happened but ETH took the team to their limits last season and burn out could be a factor.
