His job will be to put the right people in the right positions. Along with Berrada, he will meet with the board and set the criteria by which we hire managers, coaches, scouts, recruiters and all other football related staff.
They will be ultimately responsible for the style of football we play and our strategy when it comes to developing, recruiting, coaching and retaining or moving on players.
If our recruitment is poor in the short term, he’ll be the guy who replaces the cogs in the wheel who are responsible for identifying players and signing them.
If the head coach is not performing in the short to medium term, he will be the guy who leads the process to replace him with someone who can better execute the playing style identified.
Likewise for medical staff, academy staff, and analysts.
His effectiveness will be judged on their long term performance of such decisions. If after 5-6 years, we are still seeing a succession of ineffective managers and wasteful recruitment, then it will be time to ask questions about the guy at the centre of the wheel.
If we are going to move for a person who is seen as one of the best in the field, and go through all the trouble of prying him away from a reluctant Newcastle, we need to give him time to reshape the long term structure of the club. It’s not a role you start judging him on after 6 months or a year.
