We should buy him immediately. Giggsy misses about 25% of our games due to his various injuries and Duff could replace him. He can also fill in on the right when Becks is out. Incredibly versatile, excellent workrate, powerul/accurate shot, can play on the left and right, Prem tested and proven. Just what we need. Buy him immediately.

Nice idea, SAF should defo give it some thought.
Just asking, how long do people on here think Giggsy has left in him ? Consider he will be 29 soon (a time when Zidane, Figo, Pires etc. are hitting their peak) and his pace is an essential asset. ;)

Giggsy will not maintain his World Class form much longer, especially when you consider he broke into the first team at 17. He's had a good 10 year run and probably has another 2-3 years left as we know him. Duff could fill in the blanks whenever Giggsy is out, or if Fergie wants to experiment with Giggs up front, as well as if Becks is injured/loses form etc. He's one of the best attackers in the WC.

Been saying this since before the world cup, unfortunately his price has rocketed, but his quality is now undoubted.

He can do more than what Giggs does, he shields it and holds it much better and almost never seems to lose the ball without earning a free kick. That'd be a weapon in itself with Beckham there. Distribution and shooting is also better than Giggsy, he is more tenacious and can play up front too. He has much more penetration than Beckham, so not only is he cover - he is an extra option on both wings and up front. Duff is more consistant than Giggs I'm sorry to say.

Just think, he has what it takes to play as our link up man, but more interestingly he has all the attributes to do for us what Owen does for England and Liverpool. He seems almost built for us: Who do we need? Backup for Giggs + Beckham, pacy striker/link up man. - This guy is all in one!

SNAP HIM UP PLEASE

Agreed. Plus we could probably get alot more longterm productivity out of Giggs if he would accept a more ambassadorial role on the left by allowing Duff to slowly take a bulk of the minutes and have Giggs sub in so as to keep him healthy and with the club for as long as possible, ala Irwin.

One thing Duff has over Ryan is his strength. He is so aggressive defenders are frightened of him. Giggs scares opposition another way, but sometimes when he is facing a tough RB he will be forced of the ball, and you lose what he is good at. It forces him to come inside, where he isn’t as proficient. I’m not sure he would accept being used sparingly though, not for a couple more years. But SAF can persuade him I’m sure.

Duff was the best player on the pitch today he outshoned Raul, Morientus and every other Spanish super star. A must buy this summer, the perfect replacement for Giggs, plus he has said that he would like to play in the champions league, which of course we are in, he has been dropping suttle hints about leaving, so it could may happen, hopefully!!!!! :)

If we get him for 15 million he is a great buy.

15 million? 20 million?...anything....he's priceless

I wouldn't mind selling Veron to get the cash to buy Duff

I am not saying that I don't have faith in Veron....it's that I believe Duff is more suited to English football

Couldn't agree more - a must buy.

Rio Ferdinand/Damien Duff - Transfers could have a strong british presence this summer.

Then again a mate of mine that works at one the reputable football magazines, has told me that a certain big name brazilian is alomost definately joining the O/T ranks, so we will just have to wait and see.

There are only 3 big name Brazilians. Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Bobby Carlos. Could be any of em, but I think its Ronny because of the common relationship that United and Ronaldo have with Nike.

Let's be realistic guys... Ronaldo, Damien Duff, Rio... it looks like even the initial down to earth ppl are starting to lose their minds in the transfer talks...

More likely than Nesta,Crespo everybody was talking about a while ago.It seems more likely that Veron will be sold.A great player but if we can get Rio or Thuram,Ronaldo and Duff for the Veron money and some plc money we will be much stronger than last season. And Mexes to replace Blanc next season.

He might be good but he will be a very expensive back-up for Giggs. And I doubt he would be happy sitting on the bench.

Don't know if we are all getting the same TV coverage but Duff dived for that first pen. (Not taking anything away from his top class performance btw). They showed it over and over in slowmo and the defender only make contact with Duff's trailing leg once Duff was already on his way to the deck. He dived imo.

Agree with the general jist of this thread though, Duff would be a brilliant addition to the squad - snap the fecker up Alex.

With Giggs and Beckham injured the whole time we need some more quality backup or maybe first choice?

Or vice versa. Whem was the last time Giggs had an effective 90 minutes for Utd ?

He wont be just back up, he will be another option giving us more flexibilty and more unpredictability. Especially giving us more energy when we look stale and flat, which has been often.

Pillage our villages? Rape our women? Pollute the English blood with their seed? Introduce the notion of roads and military strategy?

I dunno...quite alot it seems.

I don't disagree with signing him, assuming we will pay what it costs and that he wants to come to OT. However, to suggest that he is better than Giggs or that Giggs is not going to be first choice for quite a few seasons yet is bordering on IMO.

Why do I get the feeling that you missed my point?

No he will not be first choice, but he'd be a squad player. But I wont be signing him for left wing, but more of a kick up the backside for Giggs - remember Blomqvist's effect on Giggs?

I would be signing Duff for another option up front, he can give us some pace and tenacity where we have little. He can hold the ball better than RVN! I'd like to try him out first as the Utd equivalent of Owen, if that fails then in the hole like Scholes, Giggs and Veron before him. He did it at the WC.

Also another option on the right.

Our team is awesome, we're not looking to strengthen as such, but create more competition and more flexibility. This is the future of football, not first 11's and 2nd 11's.

I also agree we should get Duff. But I'm suprised so many of you said he should replace Giggs. I think he should partner RVN up front and it will be awesome if we have both Duff and Giggs to terrify the defence of opponents.

Oh, just get him! ;)
Not sure we would, though, don't know who's United's genuine targets these days, with the tabloids spoiling everything. Duff has really impressed me and with the kind of players we already have, he'll shine. I have always regarded him as a winger though, but maybe he'll do well in the 'hole'.

There is a distinct difference between 'diving' and 'going over to win a penalty'.
Both Owen and Duff were actually caught in the tackle and 'went over'. That cannot be called a dive.
'Diving' is going over when you haven't been touched.
;)
Both Owen and Duff were very professional about winning the best result for their respective teams. To call them 'divers' is an insult to both players. I've seen a few dives in this World Cup and (Portugal and Senegal note!). That Mexican bloke Hernandez tried it on against the USA this morning as well. I just can't believe people are comparing what Duff and Owen to what he did!
Oh, and yes, let's have Duff at OT :)

the reporter:

Owen's pen was a bit more straightforward. The defender, Ponchettino?, stuck his leg out, had Owen not 'dived' Ponch would have tripped him anyway due to Owen's natural progression.

Duff, however, started his 'dive' as soon as the defender went down for the tackle. When Duff was in mid 'dive' he dragged his trailing foot, blatently, onto the defenders outstretched leg.

Now, here's the thing; a ref doesn't have the benefit of slow-mo!

Should he if a dead ball ensues immediately after the 'alleged' infringement?

I doubt FIFA will ever allow that to be part of the game but something needs to be done otherwise these pro's will be spending more and more time practicing 'dives' than anything else.

BTW, call it embelishment, going over to win a penalty or whatever, it's still diving in my book.

Sucks when it happens against you, a big laugh and acceptable when it happens for you!

"Both Owen and Duff were actually caught in the tackle and 'went over'"

yeah, Owen was caught, but Duff certainly was not.
Dunno what you've been watching, but all the channels I've been watching agreed that it was a dive and that there was no contact. I've watched it in so many replays.

"'Diving' is going over when you haven't been touched."

Correct. Exactly what happened with Duff.

Not that it matters though, I don't necessarily condemn diving, as in today's professional football EVERYONE cheats one way or another.

Oh come on, let me wear my green coloured spectacles... please...

Errr... what about Fletcher, Richardson, Djordic, Chadwick? The left winger position is one of our most catered for positions. Duff is going to be too expensive now for a very low priority, and imo unrequired, squad place.
