Daley Blind - Deal Confirmed

Makes sense on a lot of levels and the price is more or less what you'd expect. Adds some competence in the middle for the time being and then competition and options for when we (hopefully) strengthen further in future, plus he's another that clearly wants to play for us and Van Gaal knows him well. We'll have to see how he makes the step up from the Eredivisie obviously, but a sensible signing I reckon.

His agent has said: "It's one of the biggest clubs in the world, so you can not say I want this or that. But Daley shall play in the starting eleven, as a controlling defensive midfielder. After that it is up to the player to see that it stays like that."

As to be expected he will be deployed in midfield and will be used as cover for LB if needed.

Read somewhere that either last season or in 12/13 (can't recall which) Ajax averaged 2.4 points per match when Blind played in midfield and 1.5 when he didn't.

Let's hope he can bring that level of influence on games to our fixtures. I have high hopes for em. Not the stellar player we'd all wanted but everyone has a place.

I think Blind will become a crowd favorite and I have no doubts that he'll adjust pretty quickly to the PL

I find the whole open celebration of a transfer and his manager congratulating him thing a bit weird. I mean, I know their star's faded, but this is still Ajax. Imagine a mid-table PL team doing that? Their fans would go mental.

they are proud that one of their players plays for United. They kind of knew it from the beginning that this one could go through. You cant compare with a premier league club. It is a bit weird, different mentality and expectations i guess.

That might apply to AFC Nowherestan, but Ajax are a big club. Not a relevant one now, but still a big, proud name in football.

Danny Blind isn't part of Ajax's coaching staff, is he? I thought Danny was with the Dutch national team. He's just celebrating the fact his son is going to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

My wife is already a fan :nono:

At least he can feckin speak ENGLISH! That in it self is worth at least £2-3m in my opinion as communication is vital in that midfielder area.

Very pleased with this signing. Another handsome player in the squad ;) We've done very well in this window in acquiring the right players, I believe.

hmm, hope he's going to be as good as you all think.
Sorry that looks like our team way to slow in build up. I did like him being availble as a outlet but he wasn't really be rushed at all will see.
People here seem to think he is 'very good'. However, he is decent and a good cover. Nothing more and nothing less. We need world class midfielder, if Blind is the only CM we will get, I will be very disappointed. However, we desperately need someone who is confident with ball on his and comfortable playing passes where other players in our midfielder won't try to do. In other words, we need a utility player anyway. He is that person.

I expect he'll be slotting straight in to Fletcher's spot. It will be a huge upgrade too which is a sad thing to say but Fletch just can't hack it any more. When Carrick comes back he will still be a good option to have and will play many games. The kind of squad player we need. It's sort of been forgotten in recent years that squad players at United still have to actually benefit the team, not just be players that aren't good enough to merit a start. Having players like him around will be a huge upgrade on the likes of Anderson.
On current form, agree with all that, enjoyed watching him at the World Cup, hope he can make the position his own.

This is a signing we badly need, looking forward to see he and Herrera running the CM.
It looks attractive as a ball-playing central midfield but that seems so lightweight (Not that it's much change bar when Jones is in midfield). I seriously hope with all the quality players we will have in the new starting line-up we can just keep the ball away from the opposition.

I'm not judging him at all and I watch a lot of European football but not much in the Dutch league we will see

At least we have made progress in the good looking league over the last 2 years. Since Ronaldo left and until the arrival of RvP we had one of the ugliest squad probably in Europe!

This signing means we can play Di Maria and Januzaj as wingers when we want to with Blind/Herrera playing centrally together. I think that will be something we will see quite often if we aren't getting a goal - before we most likely start using it against the weaker teams from the start.

What's he like guys? Favourite position, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

I did watch him in the world cup, where he looked comfortable on the ball, and had a good passing range, (pass to Van Persie's goal against Spain springs to mind) but not enough to give a fair judgement.

He reminds me a lot of Carrick on the ball.
Oh good shout that. Carrick is pretty ideal for comparisons. Both aren't lightning quick, yet both read the game exceptionally well. Well '2007-2010 Carrick' did. I'm being a little harsh there.

But Blind is only 24 and is even better at breaking up play in my opinion. Maybe not as prolific a passer as Carrick but he comes close.

If he can be neat and tidy, protect the back four and recycle possession quickly and efficiently, hes already an upgrade. At 24 theres a lot of upside aswell. He wont pull up any trees, why should he, hes only a footballer. But he needs to get the ball into Mata and Di Maria and the like quicker than they are currently getting it. Let them do their damage.
I'm looking forward to this, lets get him confirmed holding up his #15 shirt.
