I think you’re onto something there. To be fair, all of the Caribbean is a paradise and most of the countries there are in the shitter. So perhaps the real question we should be asking is what is preventing these countries from becoming more prosperous?
I'm afraid the answer might be that rich western corporations make a lot of money there but take most of it out, leaving little for the people that live there.
It’s the ultimate straw man argument isn’t it? Right wingers think that left wingers think that communist countries are paradise. In reality it’s the old horse shoe theory and any country leaning to one extreme has power centralised with an authoritarian leader or an oligarchy and a has a public living in poverty.
Been spending most our lives living in a commie paradise
Seize production and collectivise, living in a commie paradise
We're all equal in the leader's eyes, living in a commie paradise
No more billionaire lies, living in a commie paradise
Bingo. Not to mention the cigar & rum market it would re-open in the States. (a man can dream)It is yes. Cuba has been put under economic pressure by the US for decades, which has put undue pressure on its people. The US changing its policy would go a long way in actually liberalizing and modernizing Cuba, since it would inject insane amounts of tourism revenue onto the island, which would raise the standard of living for everyone.
Watch out, @nimic ‘s about
I'm pretty sure the lefties are the problem. Everyone else is doing just fine!I'm afraid the answer might be that rich western corporations make a lot of money there but take most of it out, leaving little for the people that live there.
Exactly. We recently discovered oil in my home country and ExxonMobil has deprived us of about 55 billion. The same happened with our gold.To be fair, all of the Caribbean is a paradise and most of the countries there are in the shitter. Move this to the general if people are just gonna shit post. It's a serious issue and i hope the current events forum can at least have a better level of debate than this childish crap.

I did an essay about this in college. I’ll have to look and see what book I was writing about, but it was on the economic and social split of one of the Caribbean islands into two halves… one side is the resort paradise and the other is where the actual islanders live. For a 19 year old from S.C. it was really eye opening stuff.I'm complicit in that. i go down, stay at the Hilton or a Sandals and the people who work there are wonderful but they're just employees making probably fairly standard wages. I don't know if there are employee share purchase schemes they can participate in or other mechanisms to help make them part of that wealth generation beyond those wages and tips they get but I would be pleased to see something like that in place as a start.
I agree Marcos definitely posted in the wrong forum, he doesn’t have the capacity for the CE.Yes and my point is that level is the general forum level not the current events forum level.
I agree which is why i suggested it be moved to the general and those of us interested in a serious discussion could start a new thread in the CE forum.A serious thread about Cuba would be very interesting, about Cuba generally or right now or both. If a thread like that existed that'd be cool, but no one have started one yet. This one is the political variant of "let's laugh at England", except instead of laughing at England for losing a football match we're laughing at ... lefties, because ... Cubans are hungry.
Marcos doesn't know or care about Cubans, this is a troll post.
I also agree and I just made one.I agree which is why i suggested it be moved to the general and those of us interested in a serious discussion could start a new thread in the CE forum.
I'm fighting a corrupt dictatorship in my own country so maybe am a bit sensitive plus i could never takeover a thread started by Marcos, it'd be like Scaloni taking charge after Maradona. The people would revolt.Just do a thread takeover, DE.
So I started another Cuba thread when this one went off the rails. It seems to be back on track so any chance a mod could merge them?
