Cristiano Ronaldo

No one is saying he'd hold us back, or not improve us...where are these straw man arguments coming from?

The argument against is that he'd be a very very expensive short term investment...who could present a huge problem a couple of years down the line just like RVP, Rooney, and to a lesser extent Falcao have. And also, for the money it would cost, we could buy a player who would spend his peak years at the club, and contribute for the next 5/10 years, rather then just 2 or 3.
We are confident of becoming the first club to post 500m revenue this year. Expensive is relative.
If we win the league with him over the next two years wouldn't he be worth every penny? 25/30m per title?
We have a very young squad as it stands, we can stand to bring some unequalled experience. Look at what a so called past it Bastian is doing for us.

This happens every single year ever since he left. You think we're hearing something new?

Ron raid: Fergie asks United to bring back Ronaldo...whatever it takes

Man Utd boss David Moyes still hopeful of bringing Ronaldo back to Old Trafford

Just type "Ronaldo wants" in google, and first suggestion you get is "Ronaldo wants to come back to united" (with google probably rolling its eyes).

Recognising some pattern here?
Has he ever been so sure to leave the club before?
Here you go. Van Gaal now says he's been misquoted about having plans to sign Ronaldo, and Ronaldo's agent had this to say earlier.
Manchester United have been told that it will be ‘impossible’ to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Louis van Gaal opened up about his interest in bringing the Real Madrid forward back to Old Trafford over the weekend.

But the Dutchman’s hopes of an audacious deal appear to have been ended by Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes.

Speaking to Canal+ Mendes addressed the issue of his client’s future, saying: “It is impossible. He will end his career at Real Madrid.”

Ronaldo has consistently been linked with a move back to United after leaving the club for Real in 2009.
I blame those United fans who fall for it every time.

Few actually believe it will happen. The discussion in this thread has taken on more of a would-he-be-worth-it tenor. I believe he probably would, regardless of whether or not we actually do sign him. The discussion is purely hypothetical.

What rumours?
Him supposedly helping out in bringing Ronaldo back. Its a fairly new and flimsy rumour I reckon but it bothers still. I can just see the move bombing (in terms of Ronaldo not playing well enough) and SAF further tarnishing his seemingly bullet proof reputation (the Moyes saga counts against him in a lot of peoples eyes).

Read a story yesterday quoting a "source" close to Ronaldo, saying if he leaves Madrid it will be for PSG due to lifestyle etc.

I love all these "source close to player/club x" stories

As you were.

Tbf, Castles is as close to Joge Mendez as you can get.

This place is fecking odd at times.

I don't think Ronaldo will come back and of course, we can't be paying 80m. But this rejection of Ronaldo because of a decline is mind boggling. It's like a player cannot have a spell of poor form, he's automatically becoming crap.

We have so many threads complaining we don't score enough or create enough. Here we are talking about one of the best goal scorers of the game and we wouldn't want him. We've got Rooney, ffs.

It's not as if Ronaldo stands in one spot in the penalty box all game and waits for the ball to fall to his feet or head and tap in. He is moving around and disrupting defenders. Our forwards aren't even doing that.

As one poster said, some here think Vardy or Mane is good enough but turn their noses at Ronaldo. Ok so maybe Vardy may end up a better player than Ronaldo in 5 years (if ever) but even if he was on the decline, he'd still be good for several Seasons.

And this decline is way overblown. This is a player that scores 40-50 goals a season. If he declines and halves that amount, it is still a boatload more than what our attackers are exhibiting at the moment. Guys like Zlatan and Pirlo have proven there is life after 30 and we know Ronaldo is vain enough to keep himself in good shape, unlike our captain.

Castles says Madrid would want £80m. That should rule us out, I hope.

One has to be a proper Stupid to be against Saf because of this. The man has made many mistakes and so on but his Reputation being tarnished? No.

A COPE journalist said he's been playing injured for over two years. Considering his age and how much he would cost, I think we should allow PSG the all clear in him.

Should definitely be looking to sign him if he's leaving in the summer, which I honestly expect him to -- knew he'd be staying there until he broke that goal scoring record.

PSG and City will be all over this.

Please stop this nonsense.

btw, I'm very much in the "Ronaldo is in decline" camp, but he's still a fecking lethal goal scorer. Has more goals this season than our entire team. Even if he manages 50% of that output with us, it would be worth it. 20+ goals a season up front guaranteed.

Shirt sales alone would recoup most of that in the first few months, but only if Woodward showed some savvy in the contract negotiations.
I know this has been discussed many times on the Caf. Shirt sales don't work like that.

If we can sign him now, we'd still win the title this season, even with LVG in charge.

He's one of the only ones in the world who can convert at the rate LVG needs his philosophy to work.

We've already got one of those up front, thank you very much.

Please don't ever put Cristiano in the same bracket as this version of Wayne Rooney. A double amputee version of Cristiano could still head in more goals than this Rooney.

His PR team always start saying this when he's not playing well. No one ever mentions it when he's in form.

Once you're on your way down you never know how quickly things might go.

If they were in different areas of the field, fine, but both are forward players as well. It's the sort of thing a club that plans well - like we used to be during most of Fergie's time - does NOT do.

I'd happily take Ronaldo instead of Rooney. Having both is stupid and is only going to end in tears.
