Cristiano Ronaldo

To be honest you guys can contain him as long as you're really careful about letting Real counter attack. Just don't over commit the way too many Spanish sides do. Easier said than done, but it can be done.

Yep, he can be smothered out of a game, it's happened a few times this season.

That goal is another reason why we mustn't get into that backing off, standing off mood that sometimes takes us during games and then rarely lifts. Someone should be actively trying to tackle him the second he's on the ball in those sorts of areas. It's not like Messi, he's not going to run through five central players. But he doesn't have to do that to score, he just needs defenders to give him that bit of time and space.

I don't want to take anything from Ronaldo, but I don't rate a lot of the Spanish clubs lower than the big 3. A lot of them seem quite defensively inept as well.

Still, he's a class player and i'm very happy for him. I only hope we see his return in a few years.

They're good footballing sides, but they're really naive about trying to play Madrid. Like I said above, they counter better than anyone so when these teams think they can get at Madrid by pushing players up the park they're really committing suicide. Every one of their attackers is dynamite when it comes to bursting up the park in free flowing counter attacks.

As of tonight he's the sixth highest goalscorer in the history of Madrid and number two on their "3 or more goals" chart behind Di Stefano.

That's incredible to be sixth all time scorer at a club like Real madrid in basically 3 and a bit seasons.

He was frighteningly brilliant tonight. I can't think of a current right back I'd rather have marking him than Rafael though. He's got a knack of putting his more illustrious opponents to sleep for 90 minutes. Out of form as he is, I think we'll see Valencia on the right wing in front of Rafael purely to help cover him.

João Pereira, his international team mate and Valencia right-back, has faced Ronaldo three times already this season (twice in the cup, once in the league). Two 1-1 draws and a 2-0 win for RM, no goals/assists by Ronaldo. Pereira was suspended for the remaining league game and Madrid destroyed Valencia 5-0 at the Mestalla with Cristiano getting 2 goals and 1 assist.

Buy Pereira? :)

Either way, the most important thing is to stay concentrated when marking him, and trying to cut off the supply from (primarily) Özil.

Trying to man mark him is futile. He's extremely mobile, and will drag his marker all over the pitch, leaving space for others to exploit. I think keeping an eye on Ozil will be much easier, and will be assigned to Carrick.

One shot is all it takes for this man. Absolutely massive moment for whoever comes up against him.

I meant marking in the context of those swift counter-attacks they are capable of instigating... as he's invariably the final recipient in those moves.

In reality it takes him closer to 7 shots to score on average ;)

feck average, this is football. It just takes 1 shot. Stats have ruined the game. I know your post was just a little joke (I hope it was anyway) but they have ruined the game.

I think Rafael could do a decent job on him if he really focused on Ronaldo and nothing else throughout the game, but I'm not sure he can curb that willingness to get forward and with the way Madrid break it mean most of his chances to run at the defence will be with Rafael 40 yards behind him.

I just don't see us stopping him scoring, we either go catenaccio 2.0 as in 2008 or we go gung-ho and hope we create more chances than them as we've done all season. We can't control the midfield so it's really all or nothing. Bring in Rio and Vidic, sit deep and deny Ronaldo that space to run into - and even then he'll probably just score from 20 yards - or get Smalling in there, push up and take them head on.

We should just go for it, with casillas out, shoot on sight!!

Different attitude, once they go behind they look for an equaliser - just as teams would do with us. But once they go two behind they don't start looking for damage limitation, they take more risks. It's partly because Spain uses head to head to set positions in the table, not goal difference.

It can get to 4 before a team starts to think about avoiding embarrassment, and even then, like last night, they'll keep trying to get a cheer up goal, though if they aren't too depressed, they'll stop overcommitting numbers in attack.

I'd try out Smalling against him.
I'd use Rafael against him. Rafael has generally looked very good against better opposition and keeps them very quite. Get him to primary focus on keeping him quite and we will go a very long way to keeping Ronaldo from influencing the game to much.

We must do our best to keep the ball away from him.

Imagine if we had Keano and he clattered him nice and early.

Clattering him is an option but we need to avoid the cards. Specially Rafael.
Did going in hard on him ever work anyway? I'm sure it just used to make him try harder.

Like you say, best off keeping the ball away from him. We need to stop him getting around our box as well because we know how lethal he can be, even if he only manages to draw a foul.

Lets face it, he isn't going to go 2 legs against us and not score. But hopefully any goal he scores will only be consolation goals.

fecking hell Veeva, if Pepe or Ramos twatted Van Persie you'd be screaming murder.

They have this life size poster in my local branch of Barclays, love it!

Yeah I cannot agree with this at all. For me that Seville side would dispatch Everton quite easily.
