Cristiano Ronaldo: Set to leave by mutual agreement

Is Ronaldo justified to say that he “feels betrayed” by Manchester United?

Not much of a statement...

"Manchester United notes the media coverage regarding an interview by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The club will consider its response after the full facts have been established.
Our focus remains on preparing for the second half of the season and continuing the momentum, belief and togetherness being built among the players, manager, staff, and fans"

Carragher absolutely spot on. Even posters on here said this was a train wreck waiting to happen the day he signed. How could the club not see it?
Someone as self absorbed and a single minded as Ronaldo was never going to accept being treated as player less than what he was at his peak.
Another thing. The irony of a Liverpool legend defending our club and manager while our legends leave him out to dry.

It's a nothing statement, but the togetherness part could be interpreted in certain ways

I think the less said the better. Just let the fact that he's a monumental self obsessed bellend resonate.

This isn’t quite true. Ronaldo wants us to pay him off. We’re willing to let him go. There’s a 10 million difference in those positions. If we can terminate his contract for cause - which appears to be what we’re looking into - that’s a win for the club as we save 10m quid.

Why has Ronaldo done this interview then? Surely the only outcome is he gets fined and released with no payout. If he could leave anyway, why bother?

He's a lot of things but he (and his agent) are not morons when it comes to thing kinda thing.

Yes but Ben Foster isn't the same as Ronaldo
I know, but he clearly has his eyes on moving up in the world, either via United-sponsored content or bigger YT stuff. He is well aware of how Ronaldo reacts to people speaking out against him (see Neville). Hence why I imagine (even if it's unlikely) he isn't slating Ronaldo. Hell he might even have a Ronaldo thing in the pipeline.

I think the last line is telling. United already picked their side.

I'm so happy Ronaldo has done this, in a bitter way, because by doing this he has written himself out of the lineup for good, and that's genuinely one of the best things he can do for the club right now. Nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey...

Saying that you don't respect your boss, and that your business is very poorly ran is probably not enough to get you (legally) fired, is it?

I'm pretty sure that if I went on national television and talked shit about my employer, my superiors, the company, the office, the morale, even the fecking cantine - that'd be a sackable offence. I'm pretty sure there's something about interviews/media/PR etc. in just about every employees contract in any major company.

It's a really tough one for Man United. One the one hand they'll want to get rid asap, sacking him for breach of contract (or something similar). On the other hand, they'd exactly what Ronaldo wants them to do and why he's done this interview.

The only tough bit is how we sell him to Chelsea. Even Todd might see the danger in Ronnie now.

You're thinking about this way too rationally. At the moment he's acting like a petulant child with a severely bruised ego

Why would we have to pay him out? Legally maybe he isn’t in breach of his contract. If that’s the case then he’s in a strong position because his toxicity is such that we may just be willing to pay 10m to get shot of him. Hence why he’s done it.

Interesting. Rio thinks Ronaldo deserved Cantona-esque treatment previously, but can't defend him now. He still then essentially defends Ronaldo since the summer, essentially being a useful idiot willing to argue every toss on ETH's decision making on Ronaldo up until now.

Carragher and Howson talk complete sense.

That is the way it has to be. Whatever the club puts out has legal ramifications. It can't speak/act like fans do. It needs to wait for full facts.

There's absolutely zero chance he's getting any kind of payout from Man United now.

what's amazed me is how dim he's turned out to be. Mind you, always new money could buy brains (look at our bleeding government!)

I can't believe Carragher talked sense... (PS not heard what he said)

You think we can just terminate his contract and he won’t counter sue? Chances are there’ll be a mutual agreement I think so he’ll get something. Keane got his contract paid in full I think.
was his contract due to end this year or was there an option (for either side) to extend for one more year? If so, that could make things more tricky

This has to go in a list of worst ways to end your career. Below Maradona's cocaine incident but above Zidane's header to Materazzi.
Agreed, at least Zidane was still beating Brazil, Spain, and Portugal on his way out. CR7 is a has-been at this point.

I think the club wanted a transfer fee for him and this outburst is his way of getting a free transfer to any club he wants. It'll be a "mutual agreement" thing with no payout at all.

Can the club sue him and terminate his contract?
Depends what’s in his contract but the club can terminate (although it won’t because it’ll mean paying him off) or come to a mutual agreement.

I hope they just show him the door and say ‘you want to leave, you buy out your deal’ otherwise shut up. He has the money, he’s just greedy.

I think this is why the club is waiting for the full interview.

Club lawyers will want to make the case that he's in breach of contract so they need the full context of everything he has said, in order to build as strong a case as possible to sack him.

It will be tough. United couldn't sack Keane without compensation. However, none of us saw the Keane interview. This has partially gone public and soon will go fully public. I think the club will likely have solid grounds to argue he's deliberately done reputational damage to it and fire him.

Might well be a nothing statement, but the right thing to have put out, the interview has not aired yet and has yet nobody knows fully what is in it.

Based on the statement and the brief via sky, it's clear and obvious the club want to sack him...but presumably without incurring any cost.

You'd think in a standard contract at an organisation like United, an interview of that style would go against some part of the agreement...but who knows what he signed with the idiots we had in charge of affairs at the time he signed!
I hope they actually sue the Cnut for £100m or something.

I know this wont happen and is said with a hint of humour.
