Cristiano Ronaldo - Much Ado About Al Nassr

Hints of racism here but okay.

Like saying coming England to see the Buckingham Palace with a side dish of partying with underage girls with Prince Andrew.

They probably do that in Saudi Arabia too to be fair.

Currently top of the league though! But have played a game more than the chasing pack

Oh they’re second now, could go third if the team below win their game in hand

I mean there's a reason he's worth 500m, if he had the same thought process on economics as you he would never have got there.

Yeah. Warren Buffet worth 100 freaking billion. He's 92 y.o. and still working.

Is this projection? Because a shit load of people don't do that at all. This is valid for all income classes. I don't think it's even the majority who do that.
Most people's earnings go up as they get older and progress in their careers. Correct me if I'm wrong most would take a pay rise they progress.

Of course he would. He got 500m not because he's prioritised maximising his earnings, but by being a very great football player. And in any case, your argument wasn't that this is how Ronaldo is. Your argument was that this is how EVERYONE is, and simply how the world works. Which anyone can disprove with readily available examples in a few seconds of serious thought, unless of course you simply prefer to believe that this is how it is.

Pele "sold out" to New York Cosmos at 35 y.o.
Beckenbauer to New York Cosmos at 32.
Cruyff to LA Aztec at 31.

Just saying.
Did they all do interviews throwing their club under the bus and demanding top level football or bust?

I never said everyone? I said most.

As if that was a remotely relevant comparison. Most don't already have a 500m net worth.

Up until the final year at Juventus will be, everything after that will be a bitter period imo
It won’t be though. Players that have done much worse than Ronaldo has done are looked back on with fondness and he’ll be the same in time. There’s a lot of understandable bitterness towards him right now but it’ll mellow.

i reckon he’d have more credibility if he’d announced he was marrying his sister.

How do you know how much money he has and need?

His net worth is a matter of public record. Google it. And nobody needs more than 500 million USD, unless your definition of "need" crosses into absurd territory.

I edited my previous post to give you an example of my own profession (I'm a doctor).

What you are saying now is not what you said before. "Taking a payrise" isn't remotely the same thing as "maximizing your earnings".

Nuance is important. Anyone would like to be richer. I would love to earn more money. But I love living in my island even more. I would take a payrise for minor nuissance, wouldn't change my life for it.

Only a subset of people put money above all things.

Did they all do interviews throwing their club under the bus and demanding top level football or bust?

Probably not. But they gave up top flight football much earlier, chasing money.

His downhill started when he didn't pay tax. Could've retired as Real Madrid legend but no "my ego is bigger than the club"
Perez is a fecking genius.

You're just making vague comparisons with a time in football that was nothing like what it is today.

So what does he do now? Just retire? There's no other CL team that wants him. Why would he say no to such an obscene contract for a few years?

Well, he could take much less money to play for a lesser club in a top league. If he thinks he's still got the quality. If he doesn't think so, then his claims about being treated with disrespect at United must obviously be absurd, even to him. He can't have it both ways. He can't claim that he still deserves to be treated like a megastar at the top level, and at the same time take 200m to play in a fourth rate league. The only way he can combine those is if he thinks the money somehow validates his self-image as a great player - which is deeply ridiculous.

That's not the point. It's the interview and his suppose reasons to break away from United

Personally I think he just couldn't accept his decline and why he acted so irrationally in that interview. I think he was expecting to get a CL offer after getting out of United but that obviously didn't come through. And that then leads us to where we are.

He'll spend a season or two out in the boondocks. Surely the number of CR7 followers will drop off like a rock considering there is no TV broadcast etc. Out of sight out of mind.
Besides the fact that I really don't believe the claimed numbers are real. He'll have to pay some company to create fake accounts and likes to keep his social media presence relevant,

It's the perfect chance for him to spend the next 6 months getting up to speed after missing preseason training and make a move back to the big time.

Really clever when you think about it too...

The interview was the last roll of the dice. He wanted to maintain his high wages just to stroke his own ego -- as it then wont indicate any decline. But he also knows that if he's under contract to United, they would demand a transfer fee (of at least £ 10 million) which would further limit his prospects of moving to a top club. Doing the interview lowers any further barriers.
And yet...

Fair enough and understand your situation, I am in similar position where I could earn quite a bit more in a different country but I have young kids and settled where I am and wouldn't break that up for it. I would consider it in the future when I'm closer to retirement, so I can retire early, there's no way I want to be working into my late 50s.

But if I was offered a life changing salary now I would be on the first plane out of here.

However, this is a different situation to a professional footballer who has a limited playing career and is consistently on the move.

Sure. And you arent a WUM.

I'm confused.

Does Al Nassr has better facilities, chefs and stadium?

Will they play CL Knockout? What was the point of that interview then?

In my job we're also offered anywhere from 3.5 to 10 times our pay if we go to Arabia. Still very frw do and the job offerings keep coming.
Would you go for 1 million? 10 million? Everyone has a number. They just haven't found yours yet.

It's been horrible watching Ronaldos demise. From the minute I saw him destroy Bolton in his United debut, i knew he'd be my favorite footballer. If you look at his raw talent and not the off field antics, you have to admire him. Even if the majority of football fans acknowledge Messi as the best ever, it really is some achivement being better than the best on so many occations.

I am so sad to see how he's conducted himself in the last couple of years. If he stopped while being on top, you could still argue that he was the best ever. But now, he's just made a fool of himself.

He still made a lot of valid points in the interview.
He did.

But in my opinion he just said what he accorded to respond with Piers Morgan and what his PR team told him to say.

I just don't believe he feels anything of what he said in the interview.

Imagine announcing multi hundred million signing with just a picture

Chances are they named a city after him or the Saudi league is not the CR7 Saudi Pro League --- but we will never know since we will never be able to watch it.

This surely settles the GOAT debate if the world cup win for Messi hasn't already.

Him ending his career like this surely now makes Messi the GOAT. Embarassing. You cannot buy class.

He did.

It was a diva rant. Some of them were ugly truths, like exposing the Glazers and the way they've runthe club since 08/09

The point was to immediately extricate himself from United on a free transfer, which meant a big European club might be willing to pick him up.

That plan failed because even on a free, every big club can see that he's finished and would likely make them worse, so he's checked out of high level football in favour of easing himself in to his retirement with a big fat pay cheque.
