Cavani scored 10 league goals in 26 appearances. Marcus had 11. Think based on that, even without pens, Ronaldo should score between 15 to 20 league goals. If he exceeds more than 20, United are going to challenge for the title.

If Bruno, Marcus, Cavani, and Greenwood score 12+ goals or approximately 50 goals between them...then Ronaldo's 20 goals and 10+ goals from others, that's a very competitive goals for of 80. That's well over 2 goals per game.

Like I said in another thread for that to happen he's gotta really pull up the levels of those around him, a little bit like we have seen in the past at Leicester with Kante & Mahrez and the scousers with Alisson & Van Dijk.
Sometimes key singings can do that. It wouldn't be him pulling levels up but the team clicking with the right additions.Hopefully Ronaldo, Sancho and Varane will be just that for us.

I think we'll get 80 as a minimum in the league which will help towards a title challenge.

That would be low for Ronaldo. 20-25 hopefully. He's twice the goalscorer Rashford is, although I do think Rashford is a very good footballer.

I'd be quite disappointed if he doesn't get 25+

Goals aside, just his general quality/professionalsm (level of fitness/training regime) I hope will elevate/brush off on his team mates and make them realise in spite of his success even the best players stay "hungry"

So happy he’s home and the nightmare scenario of having to watch him in a City shirt didn’t come to pass. I would have never thought we would have topped the Sancho and Varane signings this summer but here we are, the stars somehow aligned and we have one of our greatest ever players back in a United shirt and hungry to help us win everything going. Such a massive step towards us getting that fear factor back that we’ve lacked since Fergie retired. Old Trafford will be rocking all season now and the air of positivity around the club will hopefully see us win some much needed silverwear.

Merson should stfu when he's talking about things he doesn't know. Usain retired not because he was in decline but because he won everything and wanted to retire on a high. Our other Jamaican sensation Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is 35 this year post baby and ran a PB that also happens to be the 3rd fastest time ever ran by a woman on earth. We are rewriting what is achievable for humans in their mid 30s.

Assuming he stays fit, I think he's nailed on for 30 minimum.

In all competitions? My bet would be 35+

I expect 50 goals (in all competitions)

I love this

Most of what he's saying is fair enough

I would happily take a bet he's going to do multiple stopovers, beat a couple of men and score this season. He's talking about a completely fictional version of Ronaldo. Like most of those pundits they pay more attention to the Championship than Serie A so they don't really know anything about what Ronaldo plays like on a regular basis these days. They just know he's 36 so they've invented a caricature.

Exactly. "Put him in the box and create" is such a poor way to describe him when he is much more than that.

Ronaldo is epitome of a top class athlete. NBA players play their whole career jumping while footballers run over 10k every single game with speeds up to 35km/h like the fastest NBA players but the distance is about 2-3x the distance and the sprints are longer. So please they'll me how a 36 year old footballer jumping over 70cm, running over 10k while maxing out over 30km/h isn't elite. You know he is 36 right? He would have jumped higher at his peak level 5-6 years ago and he had higher speed and quicker acceleration.

Because 70cm, 10km over 90minutes, and 30km/h is not elite.
I'm 33, I was never near elite at any sport, I carry about 6kg extra body fat and can hit these numbers!
I know many people who can, these would be common numbers in amateur GAA.
You are also selling Ronaldo short, he probably runs faster than 30km/h, that's very slow!

I was addressing the poster who incorrectly compared Ronaldo's running jump to an NBA standing jump, that was wrong.
The point is he does not have a specific elite athletic quality.
71cm compared to actual decent jumpers in AFL or NBA is poor.
The good guys there are 90cm+ and elite ones are 100cm+.

We know there are many footballers faster and fitter than Ronaldo, outside football there are many more.
Within his own sport he is known for his jumping, which is not really impressive if you understand what a 71cm running vert actually means.

I'm just trying inform people who have misconceptions about what these numbers mean, it is not a dig at Ronaldo.
It is clear to me most people following football have really poor understanding of physical performance metrics and comparisons to other sports.

I think you're reading a bit too much into it. He's just stating the obvious, Ronaldo isn't the same player he was when he left us, but that doesn't mean it's negative

Us not creating many chances for the number 9 can potensially be a hinder for Ronaldo reaching high numbers though. Esp if we are gonna use him as a pure number 9. At Juve he was playing more as a left sided striker next to a sentral striker making him more involved in the build up play. I wonder what Solskjaer plan is here. We cant move the ball as slow as we normaly do, and create next to nothing for him.

Was listening to Neville how much he insisted we need to buy a CF and splash 150mil on a 28 yo with dubious injury record Kane. To think we got Ronaldo for 2 or 3 years for 15 mil is crazy.

Cavani had plenty of chances last year. Bruno has many chances every game. We supply enough chances to our central attackers.
We score so many goals across the front line that I can’t wrap my head around the argument that we fail to create for the strikers. It goes against everything we see on the pitch.

Considering Martial hit 35G+A in 2019/20, I expect Ronaldo to atleast hit 30G+A in all competitions. Otherwise he wouldnt be much of an upgrade on Cavani tbf.

As a comparison, Kane hit 50G+A last season with around 50 appearnces.

Ronaldo hit 40G+A in around 44 games.

i can just picture it now, it’s the 7th minute, united have started on the back foot. the crowd is baying for something to happen. their hero has returned home. the 2 week wait during the international break was torture. the ball finally arrives at ronaldo’s feet on the half way line. he’s in a bit of space. everyone gets to their feet. ronaldo gets into his stride, flying by paul dummet. dummet can’t believe he is so sprightly for someone in their twighlight, ronaldo pulls his boot back to strike the ball. the crowd holds their breath.

bang!

ronaldo’s hip has gone. as he crumples to the floor his false teeth comically roll out of his mouth and down the slope around the edge of the pitch. his wife, deirdre, fires up her motorised wheelchair and heads around advertising boards. ronaldo’s great grandchildren gather around his stricken corpse. paul merson sprints by. he’s taken the opportunity to run around the pitch whilst play is stopped. he’s trying to get back in shape to show how right he was. a priest enters the pitch as a doctors shakes his head. no post mortem necessary. old age.

I would be stunned if Ronaldo didn't hit 40G+A in all competitions.

Especially if he plays a lot. He had 40 last season in a much worse team.

I dont agree if you compare to Chelsea, City and Pool. Cavani scored 10 goals in the league in 27 matches. 0.37 goals per game. 7 big chances missed. Thats not a lot. I also remember a lot of games where he was invisible as we didnt create much for him.

We’re in 6 competitions mate, that’s 300 goals total. Not realistic for a 36 year old at all and some of the competitions have a maximum of 8-10 games so that’s an average of above 5 goals per match for those competitions.

People really need to take their expectations or they’re going to be bitterly disappointed.

Last season :

Cavani had a goal involvement every 94 mins.

Kane had a goal involvement every 79 mins.

Ronaldo had a goal involvement every 93 mins.

Lets keep in mind, that Ronaldo played in the Serie A.

How many starts though? Cavani and Bruno combined is our goal tally from central attackers.
Plus there’s more to the season than league games tbf

Just check his stats vs those other top strikers. If we had signed Lewa on a 2 yr deal for that fee people would be creaming themselves saying we'll win the league. Or all I had to hear last year is if we had Kane he'd transform us. Well we're getting a guy just as good as Lewa (and better than Kane at everything besides passing) who also happens to be the one of the best big game players of all time alongside Messi to help in those late stage tournaments.

I understand that we need a top DM to really complete the squad, but it's like people are more hesitant because "It's Ronaldo" as opposed to if someone just blindly was asked if they would be happy the club signed a top striker in football and world class player even after Sancho/Varane. Bizarre really.

Ignoring goals, assists all that and going by their overall play. (plotted using percentile from fbref)

My first domestic League, my first Cup, my first call to the Portuguese National team, my first Champions League, my first Golden Boot and my first Ballon d’Or, they were all born from this special connection between me and the Red Devils. History has been written in the past and history will be written once again! You have my word!

“I’m right here!

“I’m back where I belong!

“Let’s make it happen once again!

“PS - Sir Alex, this one is for you…"

This just gives you goose bumps ❤

Goals and chances for our wide forwards and our 10 is not really that comparable to our number 9. Bruno created chances on his own, and was all over the field. Its all depends on how Solskaer wants to use Ronaldo. I hope he will be more involved in the build up play and not be that dependent on service every time. Him attacking the box from the left will result in many more goals instead of him being inside the box all the time waiting for a cross.

People really need to take their expectations or they’re going to be bitterly disappointed.
Wasn’t Ronaldo the one who had 6 seasons in a row with 50+ goals scored during his Madrid tenure?
