Cristiano Ronaldo - Man Utd Player

Apparently saying he will join either United or City - seemed quite 'whatever' about it. Either he was just acting like he was still deciding to avoid people saying in the press or he really was considering choosing them over us but Fergie and co convinced him otherwise

Who cares? I certainly don’t. This reply isn’t aimed at you by the way mate.

We all knew Ronaldo serves Ronaldo and everything comes secondary to him, maybe expect Portugal national team.

I don’t care about his ego, or romanticism or anything else. I care that we’ve signed a 30 goals a season player, whom is is immensely professional and whom will expect the very highest of standards from his team.

It’s the best signing we could have made, for where we are and where we need to be. He will lift the whole place up. The players, the staff, the fans.

I’m happy he’s here and not at City. It would have meant a guaranteed PL title for them.

Out of all the journalist and pundits who are heavily insinuating he’s past it, how many will have actually watched him regularly enough to actually have a truly informed opinion?. Imagine if movie critics always wrote full reviews purely based on watching only a trailer because they couldn’t be bothered to watch the film, surely they‘d lose their jobs.

Football punditry and journalism seems to have set such a low expectations that they can give such ill informed opinions through noting but sheer laziness so consistently and nobody thinks that they shouldn’t actually be getting paid to give their ‘professional’ opinions anymore.

I'm watching this as a 34 year old who woke up this morning with a sore back from sleeping awkwardly in my bed, and still struggling to loosen it up. And because I've sat with my feet up on the chair for ten minutes my knees are starting to ache.

feck Ronaldo, sell him.

That's how people would view Ronaldo who is only 2 years older, also forgetting how he is one of the most professional, dedicated athletes that is fitter than 99% of the PL players in their 20s

Not what we needed!
I am happy to have Ronaldo back, but this is not what we needed. I would prefere to sign a cdm, and secondary a younger striker with a better work rate.

He will bring winner mentality and lots of goals, but he will demand that we build the team around him and give him a lot of service. And the rest of the team will have to work harder defensively. I am afraid he will make the team performance worse rather than better.

Its a lot hardere to play in the Premier League than the Serie A. I doubt he can replicate what he did in Serie A, and he is getting older. And with his age he is bound to get injured.

Its good for business and will please a lot of fans, so the Glazers will be happy.

I hope it works out and that I am wrong, but I dont think this will bring us any closer to winning the title.

Its still fantastic to have CR7 back : )

Get out.

When we signed RVP, there were a lot of complaints about how it would block the development of fan favourites Danny "the local boy" Welbeck and Chicharito.

Many also used to say we shouldnt buy Sneijder/Modric as Scholes replacement, because we have Cleverley.

We needed a proper #9. Good signing.

Ronaldo would've joined City as they were the only ones until United got in the picture and then it apparently happened very quickly after it was pretty advanced City to begin with. But he also talks about himself for a whole for 10 seconds, so I wouldn't take too much from it.

We don't even have the right to laugh at City for this. Ridiculous how people still think he choose United because of some love he has for the club.

He literally said it's between City and United at that point, I am guessing he was just waiting for terms offered to him regarding money, status in the first team, penalties, etc. And probably conversation with his agent after that and that was it. After City said he won't be automatic starter he choose United, it's really that simple to anyone who isn't blinded by some romanticsm.

He won't be an automatic starter ahead of Jesus and Ferran Torres playing out of position?

Yeah the moon is made of cheese too pal.

Jonathan Wilson seems convinced he’ll make us worse, after making Juventus worse.

Apparently his “pressures” were consistently in the lowest 2% in Europe. That’s… not great?
Oh he'll for sure have to be carried defensively. But I'm not worried about that really (not like Martial does a whole lot in that). How often when you watch united is the penalty box completely vacant? We have nobody just focused on finding space to get the easy goals, finish chances. Now we do, it'll be a huge plus. And Ronaldo is good defending set pieces anyway so it's a plus in that regard.

It's funny how life works.

He was signed as a 18y old with a lot of raw talent, becomes the best player in the world in Manchester, becomes an absolute legend of the sport since that moment with iconic moments in every club he played in and he comes back 18 years later from the moment he was first signed.

He was just a kid when he first got here and he came back as a legend of the game.

Great story. Gotta love the game.

When did City say he wouldn't be an automatic starter  As reported by their most reliable reporters, they wanted him, but lost out to United. Crazy to suggest he wouldn't be a starter, they don't have a striker ffs.

Who cares if Ronaldo considered city, I don’t blame him, they’re one of the best teams in Europe. In the end he chose us out of his emotional ties to the club. If he wanted the certainty of trophies than City was the better choice, so clearly he has a love and affection for United.

Just wanted to sneak in from Juventus forums and say, that world haven't seen many better players in their prime compared to 36 year old Ronaldo. That's how good he is and that's for those, who haven't seen him play for a while. All the concerns and everything about him, you can throw them straight to the bin.

I would be surprised if he doesn't score atleast 20 league goals. I cannot wait the "debut" and somehow him leaving us, which was inevitable and joining to where he became a man, was little bit emotional. Take care of him and i bet, the welcome in his homecoming game will be thunderous. These kind of stories are always great, it's what sports are all about, to give the fans great memories and what a better memory, than seeing him down the wing - again.

Take care of him, as im sure you will.

Are you serious? I saw the Ronaldo thread on Bluemoon and some of them posted things that made more sense than this. City are desperate for a CF. It's the only thing they lack. They almost spent 150m on Kane but Levy rejected it. So 25m (figure reported at the time) would be an absolute steal for Ronaldo. He will be an automatic starter for sure as will Kane but none of them joined City. Call us blinded by romanticism but you didn't use your logic either.

Links to quotes/sources? Why don't people bother doing this?

Without it, you're just waffling and all of these assertions sound like you're just making things up. Weird, seeing as MK Don's fans are usually so ITK and on the ball when it comes to Manchester United as well.

“Manchester United's post announcing the return of Cristiano Ronaldo has the most likes from any sports club at 12.5M and counting”

What quotes, he literally says it's between City and United. MK Dons is a joke, I am not supporting them ffs.

Anyone in gulf who has to watch Richard Keys and Andy Gray talk the amount of negativity they do.. I feel your hate. I know hate is a bug word, but absolutely feel like punching these two. Add De Jong with them and that’s a trinity of punchable face.
Absolutely hate the way they are talking show signing of Ronaldo is desperate and no way he fit in with us. 2-3 days back they were all fawning over him when he was going to city.

That's probably on my part, I could have sworn I saw Pep quote that he couldn't guarantee him starting place every week. But there are many other things with Ronaldo and his demands, automatic starter is probably a weak argument with their lack of strikers.

My word who cares. He could have signed for city but he didn’t. He came home to united.

At 36 he is still top scorer in Italy (beats Lukaku, Immobile etc) and Euro (beats Mbappe/Lewandoski/Lukaku/Kane etc). I think we all know we can’t judge Ronaldo in same way we judge normal players. 36 to Ronaldo is like 29 to others.

I know Souness is a cnut but he made some good points in The Times today. Ronaldo was effective at bullying the smaller team but ineffective against the bigger ones. And that's why Juve didn't win the title or do well in Europe, unusually for them. He was playing for Sampdoria aged 35 of course, so he knows a bit about it.

We don't know how it will go. I'm just rather wary of the whole thing.

Surely sky are going to move fixtures and put the Newcastle game on TV.

Imagine the viewing figures it'll pull watching his return/debut.

People do realise Ronaldo would of literally been taking 5-6 million pay cut to come here vs city? So he must have some affinity to us....
And, more chance to win at City... Ole admitted that he had no idea that Ronaldo actually wanted to leave until the city link came out. He still could have gone to the City at that point but the old connection with club, players and SAF made him choose us over city pretty quickly. There was no other story than that.

I am not even sure with Ronaldo return. But, it is a trend that United fans nowadays are trying to find any negative things to beat any players of our own is pretty ridiculous. And, it seems Ronaldo will be no exception and we will hear a lot more of it for next 2 years.

TBF, we need a bully to bully weaker teams.

And, most players do less against strong teams than weaker teams.

Shocker..

Let's see how much problems will he create his very limited defensive work. On the other hand you never say no to a player like him, so fingers crossed Ole won't shit his pants and manage his gametime well, because playing him automatically every game, I don't think it's the way, but let's see how much desire he can show us from the first few games he gets.

Where did you get that info?

I'm assuming you got it from somewhere since you are stating it as a fact.
Legit question

Why do you think he choose United? Who said he took a pay drop?

Why did he choose United over City then?

It's widely reported he's cut his pay by £6m per year to join United. City obviously can and would pay more and given their lack of forward options he'd be their main outlet up top.

You seem certain he's not coming back to United because of any emotional attachment so the question is for you isn't it. Why is he coming back when he'd be guaranteed games and money and city and a better chance at the biggest trophies?

I'll await your response.

Nobody has suggested he will replicate what he did in La Liga. Why do people keep saying this? It's what pundits say to try and look like they are insightful etc and it's just patronising. Of fecking course he isn't the player he was at 27 when he's smashing in over 50 goals in a season and winning 3 champions leagues in a row.

PSG aren't getting same Messi either, he's not what he was when he was 27. No shit, Sherlock.

And yeah, I'd say we need him. Cavani is going to miss a ton of games, up to 20? Uruguay are playing right the way throughout the season and it leaves us Mason and Martial up top. That's also the minimum games Cavani will miss. Add on any injuries and suspension etc and we potentially really struggle up top. Even Stevie Wonder could see how much of a benefit Cavani brought last year, a 'proper' striker and Ronaldo is the superior player still.

This gives us a striker for the season and we have players to rotate in when necessary, such as Mason and Cavani. He may not single handedly win us the title but I don't think he misses the header Mason did against Southampton and you can be damn sure he would have been in the box when McTominay plays that ball across the box. Ronaldo can easily be the difference between 1 and 3 points against a team like Southampton. Draws killed us last season and an extra 20+ goals helps convert those into wins.

Scored more than Lukaku over the last 2 years and with less minutes but yeah, Chelsea have pulled off an absolute coup with their £100 million man.

If he plays at top, who cares about his defensive work in open play. I love Cavani for it but it is not a necessary thing as long as he scores regularly which is a striker's job. Same way we will try to ignore Pogba's if he keeps assisting and Pogba plays in a deeper position.

Just like Lukaku then? Who Chelsea paid £100m for and Ronaldo outscored in Serie A and the Euros.
