Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

I think oppo fans have a niggling concern that in Eriksen we finally have someone capable of giving Ronaldo top drawer delivery IF he actually stays

Under EtH and with new signings (Eriksen in particular) Ronaldo will score a lot more goals. If we get one or hopefully two more transfers in, we might even challenge if everyone clicks and give their all. Ronaldo, if he can let the CL heartbreak go, will thrive and that means goals and honours for him.

Ronaldo is a proven goal scorer, more so than anyone else in the squad. So you bet our rivals would want him gone, 37 or not he'll get plenty of goals if we continue to play the same way we've seen pre-season.

I asked because I was listening to a podcast where the Spurs-supporting host said he'd be very surprised if most fans of the other top four clubs weren't hoping Ronaldo stays. Thought that might jar with a few opinions here.

I'd be interested to hear what any opposition supporters on here think and whether they agree with him or not.

We're short on goal scorers and I don't see any striker (that we have) outside of Ronaldo who is clinical.
Here's a scenario, let's say that Ronaldo joins us this transfer window from Juventus because of our lack of goal scorers. I bet all of us would be excited, it's the perfect move, etc, etc.
But the situation now is obviously different but Ten Hag would be stupid not to utilize him. Whether or not he can press is another thing but at least the guy can score goals if you create chances, so at least he can bring something we lack.
As for another big club they all have decent strikers, why would they pay stupid amount of money for a 37 y.o Ronaldo?

That would suggest the best tactic to employ would be to get the ball to Eriksen who can then lump the ball up to the target man

So let's say we get De Jong (still not convinced of it yet), do you think an attacking RB or RW is a more essential signing

They lost a 100m proven goal scorer and now they're better in strikers department?
He didn't fit the team, they played better without him.

Why does this concept of players not fitting certain teams get lost on so many football fans?

I wonder would our top four rivals prefer to see us keep Ronaldo or sell him while only bringing in a young striker who would be back-up to Martial? Which version of United would they see as more of a threat?
Most oppo supporters I know want us to keep him and love taking the piss cos they know as long as he is at United we are not becoming a threat.

Opposition fans have no reason to be concerned with United at the present and, to be honest, I don't think they do.

Dan James scored 10 league goals as lone striker, is a pressing machine, constant threat in behind, brilliant at holding the ball up and bringing others into play? Umm…what? And Ronaldo clearly doesn’t have value to top tier teams. That’s why he’s still here.

Don't bother with making arguments that includes things outside the box, it's painfully obvious that his fans don't want to look past the individual goals column and acknowledge that it's possible for a team to improve overall if their top scorer goes away. You'd think the fact that not a single team in Europe has signed him despite him walking around with a "BUY ME!" sign around his neck all summer should clue some people in but apparently every single manager out there is too stupid to figure out that the only thing that happens when you play Ronaldo is that you score 25+ goals more than you would without him and nothing else.

Or maybe, just maybe, they have looked at the last 4 years of his career and seen that he wouldn't be a net positive for their teams.

Some people have no respect for their own club, how can grown men idolize a footballer to that extent is beyond me.
Ronaldo treated the club and its supporters like dirt, wake up and smell the coffee, the club that shown nothing but love and endless respect for him even when he scored against us at OT.
The guy literally wanted out for half his time here.
If it wasn’t for United and SAF who knows how his career might’ve turned out to be, may as well been another Quaresma.

Ronaldo has had nothing but utter adulation whenever he's came back to the club ,when he's been on opposing teams, and yet people are still accepting of his attitude and behaviour this summer.
And he's laughably comeback all forced fake smiles, posting his damage control social media posts and labelling all of this as 'fake news', the absolute cheek.

That part is amusing, completely shameless acting as if Mendes hasn't spent the summer trying to find a club daft enough to take him on. It's a shame that he's likely going to stay now, it would help Ten Hag to be able to work on the training ground with players who are part of a longer term plan rather than having a 37 year old who can't do that as he will have to prioritise recovery during the week and then padding his own stats at the weekend. That being said I guess it's at least a place in the squad filled as we're struggling to strengthen other areas and means we can focus on finding our next number 9 next summer. It's not like we're going to be much cop this year either way.

Does he really think he has a chance of winning the CL with Sporting? Why not stay and try and win the Europa with us instead of embarrassing yourself in being rejected by every big club in Europe?

The Europa League is below him.

Then they're better as a football team not their strikers department got better.

If you read my posts in this very thread you'd see I'm a staunch Ronaldo out. The reason is exactly the above, we'll be a much better football team without him.

He's not seeing the big picture then and that makes him a fool. This season is the Great Reset for our club. It's the mechanism that will begin a new era at United. Under Ten Hag we will remove the rust that has plagued us for a decade and return to where we belong as a club that people fear playing against. Manchester United will once again be synonymous with revenge, with determination, with destruction. A sleepy giant going again. Margaret Thatcher is she wasn't a total cnut and she hadn't been forced out of her party. Like Brett Favre although I don't particularly understand the reference but Americans seem to say it all the time.

Ronaldo can go to Sporting and rack up some pointless goals on a record that probably won't be beaten anyway, or he can actually take a chance to be part of something potentially great at United for a second time. If he has the balls to do it, that is.

Being a legend means writing a story for yourself that isn't just told by numbers. Cina's mum has higher customer numbers than anyone else working at Bob's Shag Shack but the thing that really makes her stand out is her perfect 10 rating on the Michelen Guide to Dockyard Gobblers.

Well, there are a lot of lies and false statements here. First thing first, Ronaldo doesn't love United. I know that's a difficult pill to swallow for his die-hard fans, but Ronaldo loves Ronaldo. Which is fine. But don't feed me the "he loves the club" shite. He doesn't. There's no special connection there. His best and most productive years were at another club. if anything, that's where his love lies.

And as for the bold, I can only assume you don't read much of this forum because those payers that you speak of got pelters all last season. People were certainly not "cool" about it.

I'm exaggerating, obviously, things aren't as black and white as I put them across in there, so you're right. There's been some pounding on other players last season too - almost everyone really. But Ronaldo gets 10x whatever other players get in terms of scrutiny and lack of coherence from the fan base. There's so much discrepancy around Ronaldo here, the guys complain when blood sucking players stay to colllect money for another season, but then seemingly hate it even more when a guy is straight forward enough to look for a way out when's not happy (and he's on the highest wage on the team!). So where do we stand as a group here? Can't have it both ways... There's also the point of a good portion of the fanbase here considering him finished, but then giving him more airtime in here than other players which while not being finished, should probably be discussed way more than Ronaldo which is a done footballer.

The part about loving the club is on the perspective of people judging his love for the club on wanting out. I'd rather judge footballers and their commitment, if you'd rather, instead of love, on what they do on the pitch, rather than outside it. Sure he may want out now, but on the pitch last year I could see he cared. He cared quite a bit. He knows where United belongs, he knows 6th is not enough, he knew at the very least, getting a CL spot was the bare minimum, kept fighting towards it while most players had already given up. I know which kind of player I'd rather have on my side. Some players don't raise any situations during Summer, but they also seemingly don't care enough during the season. I'd rather have a player that wants out but gave everything he had for the club day in day out, rather other types of player the club currently has.

Is Ronaldo perfect? No. Does Ronaldo love himself more than anything else? Probably you're right there. I just don't see eye to eye with how a lot of people see footballers in here. But I immensely respect their opinions anyway, just as I'd like people to respect mine. I enjoy fair and decent quality discussion - there's a lot of incoherent hot takes in here from many people. But there's some negative takes on Ronaldo here that are extremely well thought out, and fair game to those that while not sharing the same view as me, do so with a level head and quality in their posts.

But we won't continue to play the same way as preseason with him in the team. It's called a team sport for a reason; all 11 players matter and make a difference to the overall play

The patterns of play in and around the penalty area will continue, Ronaldo isn't an invalid, he still has decent work rate, speed and excellent finishing and control of the ball.

It's probably not just about winning the CL though, is it? It's about cementing his personal records too.

As is he's the highest goalscorer in CL history, 15 goals ahead of Messi who is two years younger and playing for a team guaranteed CL football every year. Nothing we know about Ronaldo tells me that he wouldn't care about absolutely guaranteeing his place as that record holder ahead of Messi and any younger striker who might come along later.

The thing is pressing is only part of the problem.

Benzema and lewandoski are both proper number 9's. Top quality hold up play and positional discipline two things Ronaldo has never had.

Ronaldo will score goals, but at what cost? You could carry him when he would be scoring 2 goals every game, but he's not that player anymore. If he dosent score, he offers almost nothing else and the days he dosent score are becoming more and more frequent as father time catches up with his body.

Benzema and lewandoski can have very good games where they don't score, but the teams still wins. Ronaldo is only classed as playing well if he scores. He will never have a good game where he dosent score. Thats the problem with him.
Oh goodness. Now you’ve found something else. I can’t with you guys.

Snicker. Benzema's team will still win because he plays for Real Madrid. I was watching them last night vs Juventus. Big preseason game....

Utd aren't playing with the big boys anymore, are they? You all pick a scapegoat, but no one's mentioning the big picture -- that Utd has fallen off the top tier. Maybe Ronaldo doesn't want to play for a team with the ambition of Wigan, who can blame him? (well, you all can)

Anyway, since Utd has lost their ambition, perhaps Ronaldo will take the Cavani route. Play occasionally, visit the beach often, prep for the World Cup. Win win for everyone. Utd won't be forced to play someone who only scores goals and wins games, and the team can work to improve those pressing stats.

Ralf changes the players, to no result. One constant in selection was Ronaldo. And our overall play, attacking output and team cohesion suffered massively. Confidence was shot, form was shot, morale was shot.

I think City were never really in for him and that was Mendes doing a brilliant job. But anyway, I still hope he goes to Sporting.

City was only interested in buying Ronaldo after Kane deal failed and without paying a transfer fee to Juve (making Juve directors angry) and with Ronaldo significantly reducing his salary. Basically like this year, where nobody is interested paying a transfer fee & his salary.

It is a desperate myth frequently repeated by Ronaldo fanbois that City offered him the same conditions (tranfer fee to Juve + 500k per week) as United and he rejected City to join United..

Ronaldo was injured for a period and we were even worse

Nothing to do with the very public appeal by him and his agent to offer him to any team that will have him. Or him not turning up for training or the pre-season tour.

I don't actually really care anymore because I'm entirely fine with him leaving. I felt he was a detriment to the team last season and nothing has changed in that regard this season.

We'll be far more productive replacing him with a team player who actually wants to be here.
and who will score the goals? and please don't say Martial because I don't want to split the stitches

It will be distributed more evenly among the forwards, as they should be. Last season the productivity of our entire attack dropped, including Fernandes.

When the whole team isn't built around one player, that will happen.
