That's what been said about Pelé, Maradona, original Ronaldo and yet here we are. Doesn't matter if it's in 5, 20 or 50 years, there'll always be someone who'll come along and break their records.

It's quite frankly a daft take. They already belong to football history and transcended their footballer status. I think that Ronaldo has largely proven that he's perfectly able to look beyond football and is already very active off pitch, more than any other footballer. There's no way his brand will fade away after he retires. If he goes to the US his fame will shoot through any level we've ever seen. If he clears that small legal problem he has there, that is.

He won't be forgotten - that's hyperbole - but his brand related earnings will drop substantially when he stops playing.

Probably worth pointing out as well if it weren’t for having these two legends at the same time, one of them would probably be walking away with double digit world player of the year awards which would be unbreakable

Obviously it's going to be hard to match them and also find a time in a league where it's so unbalanced in a top league in favour of two teams that 2nd place is finishing 30 points ahead of 3rd. It was a special moment in time where everything went together at once. As for Messi, it's hard to imagine someone being that good of a goalscorer, passer and dribbler all in one, there's nobody close to that today. Mbappé is closer to Brazilian Ronaldo and Henry, Haaland is closer to Portuguese Ronaldo or any of the great all-time strikers.

But as for records, Haaland has average a goal a game at all levels he's played since he was 18. He has scored 115 goals in 116 games for Dortmund and Salzburg, he has scored 27 goals in Europe in just 25 games and even for Norway he has scored 20 goals in 21 games. He's just joined City who are pretty much guaranteed to be playing at the highest level for the next 10 years you imagine in a team that will score for fun. Haaland is well capable of chasing down some of Ronaldo's records. It's more likely that he won't but he is at least in position to give it a good rattle.

I think the biggest problem in football today is numbers. Quite simply if Gerd Muller played today, he would probably be praised through the roof for his numbers.

I can bet that both Mbappe and Haaland can put up similar numbers (goals) to the players you mentioned (if they have the hunger) and they can easily be equal or better allround players (likely Mbappe) than Cristiano but they won't get anywhere near the likes of prime Messi or Ronaldinho or Maradona or Brazilian Ronaldo prior to injury in that respect.

Ronaldo absolutely needed those champions leagues to win the ballon d'or otherwise the default choice for the award was Messi for all his career except last season, 2014 and possibly 2016.

I agree with you about too much of a focus on numbers, but it’s the consistency that separates the great players from the truly excellent. Numbers like the likes of Messi and Ronaldo put up for so many years just aren’t attainable. They never missed games, they were always clutch, they didn’t have bad seasons, or even bad months.

I don’t like to boil it down to a stats game, not should they be remembered as that, but the stats paint a picture of two players that were ridiculously consistent, to the point of absurdity.

I think, after 15 years, people diminish their accomplishments because they are so used to them. They will be heralded even more in 10 years time though. There will be documentaries and movies made about them. They are that special.

It's quite early in the season for someone to have won the dumbest idea competition, but here we are.

I could grasp my head around the logic if he was 31. Let him stay in the CL then return when we’re (hopefully) back in it

But to do it when he’s probably only got one 25+ goal season left in him at the top level is laughable

I can only assume the logic behind that idea would be we're hoping to be back in the CL next season. But why the feck would we want to keep someone with that attitude. We should be scouting a replacement, not begging a 38 year old to extend

Imagine what that would do the the morale of the rest of the squad. Ronaldo fecks off for a year because he's too good to slum it with the rest of the team but as soon as they get CL football again he swans back in looking for his place back.
