Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

I ain't no fan of his, but I'm curious, what are you basing this on?
The world moves very fast. He’ll be replaced by a Mbappe, by a Haaland and others that we don’t or hardly know of right now.

His standing in the game won’t be forgotten, but it’s how the world has always worked. When you’re not in the spotlight any more many get forgotten, and I don’t see anything off the pitch to maintain his status.

Are there any people left actually still defending his behaviour?

The current line his fanboys repeat is "Yeah, it seems he wants to leave but United needs his goals and will be worse off without him in the coming season"..

The article doesn’t explain how but I’m assuming they pay the purchase price then immediately sell him. Who would want to buy him with those wages seems a mystery though.
Doesn’t make any sense unless there’s somehow a big profit to be made from selling him on. Which there won’t be.
It’s just a feck up

Would be funny if things get done fast and we play against Ronaldo Saturday next week in our friendly against Atletico.

You think he’ll have some Michael Jordan level celebrity several years post retirement? Is this just based on his Instagram followers (most of which will, as with all celebrities, be bots)?

His “brand” is nowhere near Jordan. I don’t see him keeping up with Beckham (who he’s undoubtedly bigger than now) once he’s not in the news every week. There’ll be a new active sportsman getting all his endorsements once he stops. Such is the way of the world.

You said he won't be heard of again in 5 years you numpty.
There's a reason your notifications are blowing up.

Have the night off, come back again tomorrow and we'll say no more about it.

Jordan is something else, I think Ronaldo would still remain big though, it all depends on branding and if he wants to remain very much in the public eye.

I'm intrigued at the idea of this non hard working Ronaldo suddenly being a great fit for one of the hardest working teams and managers out there

Absolutely. Mike has an incredible shoe brand which means he will live on forever but basketball is a America’s based sport and a much smaller sport then futebol.

Ronaldo has a FAR bigger reach and is arguably the most popular futebol player ever especially with the social media era. You say it’s bots but having double the next person on Instagram tells me that’s bs.

Post retirement he will eclipse Beckham even more so then he does now. Who has not achieved not even 1/3 of what Ronaldo has in the Sport and is not as known.

Might be some regionality going on with this back and forth on how big he will be after retirement. From a North American perspective, he’s big, but not that big. I think to the average person he is not as big or as recognizable as Jordan, Lebron, the big 3 in tennis, and even Beckham. I’d imagine it might be different in Europe and maybe the rest of the world.

I said outside of the game. Reading is your friend.
Yes outside of the game he will be very well known. Pick any random person off the street old or new and they will know his name.

Just give up and try again later, that was an obscure take.

For reference I’m in the UK. If 12 months ago you asked 100 people on the street who a picture was of between Beckham and Ronaldo, then more people would have got the former. This changed after he (unfortunately) signed with us.

Jordan is an "above all sports" character, what are you talking about? Nike is only a part of his legacy, Ronaldo cannot come close to him. I would say he does not even come close to Kobe or Lebron.

That's what happens when one uses social media follower count as the ultimate measure of popularity:lol: Based on that, Pele and Maradona will be no-names soon. I would say Ronaldo's popularity would fade sooner in the football world, hard to see him being considered a top-5 player other than his fanboys, he took great advantage of social media to design a narrative to promote himself despite tons of weaknesses both character wise and on field..

If we were asked to rate Ronaldo — the Ronaldo of today of course — v Martial, who would rate higher?

Pretty easy call.

your desperate "damage control" posts on Ronaldo's behalf are too funny, can't stop checking them every morning
Damage control ? My last 3 posts before replying to this nonsense was how fun the sporting forum is talking about his return and how I think he will stay at United.

He is the best player of his generation their is no damage control needed.

Your constant hate towards him is admirable though, check how many times I comment on Messi related posted and then go see how many times you are on the Ronaldo ones..I know your hurt he left Juve but let it go.

Living in Nigeria he is the most popular sport man alongside Messi.
He won't be 10 years after his retirement but he'll still be popular enough if he keep up with the branding, football fans would never forget him, even the younger generation who didn't watch him will know his name.
But someone else will come along, I don't think he's as iconic as Maradona, Pele and even Messi.
Ten years from now he'll be as popular here as say Zidane who is known by football fans but not anyone else.

Ronaldo is by a far and I mean far distance the most popular futebol player in the world and all those guys you mentioned have the same things Ronaldo has had mentality, longevity, and best in their craft along with being very marketable.

MJ I agree will always be bigger, Ronaldo though will continue to be massive after his retirement. It is wishful thinking to say other wise.

Jesus now he’s not even a top 5 player, mate…I truly admire the effort you put in some of the shite you say. It’s not easy saying such senseless things.

Yes. He’s the most successful footballer in history. He on one of the the worlds largest social media platforms has 469 million followers Beckham has 71.5 million.

I don’t like him personally I think he’s an abhorrent human being and he’s also incredibly popular and one of the few players in world football that has a generation that support him over a team.

I think it’s a weird hill to die on this.

Ronaldo is a physical specimen he won’t be short of modelling contracts (as he isn’t now) and sponsorships to keep his brand bigger than any living sportsman.

A new generation of player will take over but unless they end up being Ballon d’or winners and dominating world football I’m not sure how that’s going to make people forget one of the best players to have ever played.

Outside of the game is a bit of an odd metric though. David Beckham for example would not be known at all were it not for his footballing career so it’s not possible to ever separate the two.

Brand Ronaldo is currently about 5x more marketable just based on socials so let’s say he loses half of those followers he’s still got the best platform for a successful post career of any footballer.

He’s played England, Spain, Italy, Portugal and I wouldn’t rule out a Middle East/USA tour at some point. He’s probably the best known player globally and you’re making it out like he’ll be lost to the ether.

You are deluded but its understandable.

I wouldn't call him our best player in 08/09, the defence was the star of the show and Vidic was the player of the season.

Both of you are correct in a sense. Ronaldo was our star and most talented player, he was the best performer 06-08, but in the 08/09 season he was only at 90% of what we'd seen before. He knew he was moving and his work rate had decreased, people were increasingly annoyed at him throwing his arms in the air in despair and walking back into position. He was still the star player though and usually made the difference in crunch moments, like the CL knockouts.

In a footballing context, he will, yeah. But as a celebrity, I don't think he's going anywhere soon. He'll still have his millions and millions of social media followers, and sponsors will still be lining up to be associated with him. He'll go down as one of the greatest of all time. That alone will ensure that he won't be forgotten not just by the footballing world, but outside that too.

Brand CR7 won’t ever be done mate. He’s the biggest start in the world with almsir double the followers of any other person on social media platforms.

He’s too big of a star and too big of an attraction in football.

Yeah as long as he's still playing. After that not so much.

I think a fair few here are letting personal dislike get in the way of a simple fact.

I am absolutely not a Ronaldo fan but to think he’ll be forgotten outside of football is bizarre.

A lot of times it is how it is on here, very bi polar reactions based purely on emotion and without reasoning.

Despite Martial having been dreadful for a couple of seasons, because he's started a couple of friendlies and Ronaldo is getting dog's abuse on here, I genuinely suspect a lot would pick Martial here

If he went to the US his marketability would be quite literally astronomical over their. It would be what Beckham did for the MLS and soccer in América times 100.

Opinions are opinions and it wouldn't be universal, what seem so right to you may not be to someone else, this is a discussion board were people are meant to express their opinions.

Oh, the irony.
He may be a fan boy. But he’s right on this one.

Would Saudi Arabian clubs be reportedly after him for a €275m contract for just footballing reasons or do you think there’s a brand that’s marketable and of interest?

Oh, the irony.
My reactions here are very much the same. In fact I’ve said since day 1 of this thread that he would be staying at United because it does not make sense for another team to pay what he wants to be paid.

My apologies for calling out silly statements like the one you made or “Martial vs Ronaldo”.

While he’s active he’s absolutely marketable, I never suggested close to otherwise.

Sportswashing enters into it with Saudi however too and lots of money involved is purely to get their name into headlines that aren’t “brutally chop up journalist for reporting human rights violations”

Can you quote me on that?

I'm not Ronaldo's biggest fan and I agree with Jordan, Jordan transcended basketball, people that don't know anything about Basketball know about Jordan and his life. But Ronaldo, Kobe, Lebron are all on a similar level on international stardom. In fact you could say Ronaldo is more of an international star than Lebron and Kobe.

Can Atletico even sell Griezman? He's not theirs right?

But if they can, I'd take a straight swap

They absolutely can, but that has nothing to do that some of the statements are senseless.

You never said the Martial one but I was just bringing it up.

I think people forget just how good Messi/Ronaldo were over the course of their careers and just assume that new players will replace them and the cycle will continue.

No-one in the world playing football today will have the consistent numbers and output of these two. They won’t get close. Messi/Ronaldo won’t just stay famous in 5 years. They are complete anomalies that will still be being talked about in 50 years. And that’s just from a footballing perspective.

Players that we only have a handful of games for in grainy footage are still household names 50 years on. We have every second of every game of two of the very best to ever play the game in HD and their online profile is massive. Their legacy will only grow as people realize we won’t see their kind again in our lifetime.

It’s absolutely bizarre to say that either will be forgotten outside the game in 5 years. They are everywhere and people will use their profile until the day they are no longer with us.

Haaland and Mbappe are excellent, but they won’t get close to the output of these two. People are so accustomed to them that they forget how special they have been.
