So you know what his personal issue was during the summer for a fact? I don't so I'm not going to slate it for him, I'm very aware he's had a difficult time this year on a personal level. He's been very well behaved this season, but some fans are just desperately looking for anything they can deem as poor behaviour as a reason why he shouldn't be at United. The club wanted him to stay, blaming him for that is a tad odd.

Not too sure about that, the very fact he didn't stop his agent offering his services to any club with CL over the summer makes you think it might not be true, he stayed because there were no takers, or at least not without us funding part of it, which we were right to reject, and for this reason it's fair to be very cynical about why he missed the summer tour, even though I acknowledge your point with that.

Except the club were ready to let him go.

I believe the statistic is that Haaland would have to score 45 goals per season until the age of 35 to even match Ronaldo…..

He is much more injury prone
Haaland has scored more goals than Ronaldo at the same age. Actually, Ronaldo didn't score that much until he went to Madrid at age 24. He had one season at United when he scored 42 but the rest of the seasons he scored way less.
At the rate Haaland is scoring he might even beat Messi's 72 goals in a single season.

When did the club release that statement? Or when did Ten Hag state that?
Currently listening to his ex team mate Roy Keane stating for a fact Ronaldo had options to leave, the club didn't allow it. So kinda not whatever you saying.

He scored about 20 plus in the rest of the seasons at United and love how you just put aside that season when he scored 42.
Yeah he scored 42 in a single season but he didn't score that much.

It's another example of people insisting on rating the current as the best ever.
Haaland because he's scored 15 or so this season obviously means he'll overtake a guy who was averaging about 60 a season for yonks

Yeah. Downright silly.

He scored a bit more than a hundred goals in 6 years. That's not that much compared to over four hundred in 9 years at Madrid.
Not only Haaland has scored more than Ronaldo at the same age. Haaland has scored more than pre-Madrid Ronaldo which already takes that 42 goals season into account.

I would like to know what options Keane is talking about. As far as I know no club Ronaldo wanted to play for were willing to pay anything for him or come close to matching his salary.

If a serious club wanted Ronaldo he would not be here
It was a great feel good moment with him coming back, then scoring a few. But two years was a mistake

It's getting genuinely uncomfortable watching this play out now. Either he cannot see that he's finished, and cannot understand why he isn't playing or we're witnessing a man with one of the biggest egos on the planet slowly realise he is finished.

Ten Hag's quote was nonsense but I think even he, a man who is not afraid to speak the truth, can bear to say this guy is absolutely not an option in a top level game anymore.

I hope for everyone's sake he has a great World Cup and finds someone who will take a punt on him in January.

But how much do you know?

I think it's very unfortunate that Roy Keane spoke up like that about the CR7 situation. He's talking as if United destroyed the end of his career because 'he had takers', but I don't know for a fact but most reports said United had to pay a big chunk of the wages, which is not hard to believe when you heard some of the clubs involved, outside of Chelsea. It's just the cycle of life, CR7 isn't owed to have everything on his terms because he's at the end of his illustrious career. Why would United accept paying a big chunk of his wages for him to play somewhere else? He clearly doesn't fit with what Ten Hag wants to do, but this is also on CR7's shoulders. He could have made his move easier for the club, he could have reduced his wage demands, this is very much on him more so than the club/Ten Hag IMO.

Edit: oh my bad, Didn’t realise that this is already being discussed.

Also disingenuous of him to pretend it's all about pressing. Martial is no pressing monster by any stretch of the imagination, but he's capable of linking up with his teammates and play with his back to goal better than CR7 can for United. There's also the point Micah made about not much options up front, so CR7 is definitely going to get games, especially with Martial's shaky fitness and Rashford's inconsistency.

You shouldn't be keeping players on that sort of wages as bench options. It's stupid.

I get why a manager wants to hoard as many players as possible in case of an apocalypse, but the club needs to go above his head and do what's best in that scenario. It's why we repeatedly end up in this mess year after year with unhappy players on the bench.

Exactly. Some Ronaldo defenders online seem to insist we basically held him prisoner. Chelsea was the only club even vaguely linked with him and Tuchel wouldn't have allowed it.

Keane is similar to Neville. He probably just refuses to accept that Ronaldo is finished as a guaranteed starter for any top team because they're ex-teammates.

He'll parade the point that he led the team in scoring last season as the ultimate logic for why any scenario without him starting every game possible is an affront.

So then what should we do then, play a garbage player instead? We are stuck with him now and a miracle January move away would be a solution but only if we bring in another striker, which will cost money, the money which might not be there to spend..

If he had any serious offers he was gone. Pretty sure it's nonsense from Keane.

It was obvious being stuck with him was a disaster.

You’re right.

However, I’m more intruiged by Keane saying Ronaldo had 4 or 5 good options to leave as a matter of fact.

Ronaldo was a winger at the same age, Haaland is a striker, unfair comparison if anything.

I like Roy Keane but he's got limited judging ability when it comes to his ex teammates. Ronaldo is finished for along time now, it was even seen before when he wanted to move but no one, no one wanted him. He's good for maybe Turkey now as a 37 year old. Players decline quickly after 30 Van Persie Rooney were finished soon, their previous status and odd piece of quality just kept them getting games, until the managers found balls to bench them and sell them eventually.

Erm have let him go in the summer if Keane's right? It's a £25m feck up for the sake of a coach wanting to hoard a massive squad.

I'm sure he did, I imagine with United paying the majority of the wages. So great options for him, not so much for the club.

I wouldn’t assume that as a fact. If Ronaldo was so desperate to leave, I find it improbable that negotiations would break down simply because of a wage issue. He’s made so much in his career, he would probably find a way to subsidise
his salary to get that move he desperately wanted. I guess we’ll never know for sure why he didn’t get the move.

I’d say it’d more nonsensical what you’re saying. Keane is an ex team mate and Ronaldo holds him in very high esteem, i

I don't know if for a fact, I just believe it, know why? Ego. He's not going to take a pay cut because he led the team in scoring last season, PL team of the season, and in his eyes he's still one of the best players in the world. I think if the ego wasn't in the way, and he really wanted to leave, then he would have made it happen. United, and Ten Hag would not have stopped CR7 from leaving if he truly wanted to, but that would have meant a significant pay cut once Chelsea was out of the negotiations.

There was no serious link all summer other than Chelsea and that was soon put to bed. No one in their right mind was going to pay big wages for him.

Very poor analysis and comparison. I’ll remind you Ronaldo was a winger for most of his early career. Even his best years at Madrid was as a winger/inside forward. Weird to compare his early years to Haaland who is an out and out striker who does nothing in the game except score goals. If anything, it makes Ronaldo’s goal record even more phenomenal.

Apples & Oranges. Young Ronaldo would be more comparable to Mahrez or Grealish in this City side in terms of skillset (and was still pretty different). That version of him and Halaand have 0 in common so it’s utterly futile to compare their goal records.

It’s testament to Ronaldo’s evolution throughout his career that he completely remodelled his skillset 3 or 4 times over 20 years.

I don't get the controversy ?

Do people think we'd win if Ronaldo started ?

And in terms of coming off the bench, Martial came off the bench and scored 2 which kind of vindicates ETH, no ?

I haven't said that Haaland is or will be a better player than Ronaldo. The conversation was about his goalscoring record being probably broken by Haaland. Which is likely to happen unless a lot of injuries destroy him.

Neither did I.

I’m just explaining why it doesn’t make sense to compare their early career goal records.

Also, he’ll need to score 50+ goals a year until he’s like 35 to break the record which is doable but far from guaranteed.

That's not a game Ronaldo influences when you're 4-0 down. I don't understand the controversy. Game was over in the first half.

My hope for Ronaldo at the moment is that he gets goals and gets them quickly in these upcoming games against smaller teams. Hopefully we'll build him back up slowly and he can start banging them in regularly.

ETH was right not to bring Ronaldo on. He would have offered nothing against City. It was better to get some minutes for Martial. It’s just a shame ETH has to make an excuse to the media. But then he can’t really say he didn’t bring him on because he doesn’t think he’ll benefit the team.

He was a winger supplying Saha, Rooney and Ruud pre 2008…. Haaland‘s an out and out 9 who people supply.

Weird (and forced) comparison.
