Cricket

Tymal Mills is faster than Plunkett, and short and skiddy, AND a left handed bowler. And Finn is just as fast as Plunkett but gets more bounce (although he isn't as good with swing I don't think) and also has 90 international wickets at 29s already. Jordan is an ODI bowler for the moment I agree, but I do think but he does have real promise, especially if he could sort that weird shuffling run up he has at the moment to get an extra yard of pace which could make him a very fast bowler. Don't get me wrong though, I do think that Plunkett has both earned his cap and bowled well enough to deserve to keep it. Also lets not forget that Ben Stokes is waiting in the wings too, there's a real abundance of fast bowling talent in England right now and what's even more interesting is that most of them bat too. But it still doesn't fix the balance of the side even if you can get the right 3 or 4 quick bowlers in the team.

I do also feel that we're missing that bowler like a Mathews or a Collingwood who can come on and bowl cutters on wickets like this, only Bopara comes to mind for that on the county scene and I think he's probably had all the chances he's going to get in Tests.

By all accounts Plunkett's bowling faster than Finn who, at any rate, has been deemed unselectable for the foreseeable future.

And Tymal Mills is an appalling shout, yes he's quick, yes he's young and talented, but a test quality bowler? Not yet, his average last season was something like 63, all his pace is going to mean against test batsman is he disappears over the rope quicker at the minute. I should think Reece Topley is further up the pecking order at the minute.

I didn't say that Mills is ready for the team, i only said that he's faster than Plunkett, cause you said that Plunkett's the fastest bowler on the county circuit. And I know Topley has been on the England radar for a while, but I think he's lacking a yard of pace for international cricket.

I like Jordan but I don't think he's ready for test matches yet.

Me neither, I doubt he'll make it, but I think he's currently ahead of Mills, or at least should be. Not that either are particularly close.

Just been having a scan through the County bowling records, it's astounding how many promising seamers there are, but they're virtually all tall 6ft+ fast medium pacers

Mills and Topley are the only exceptions and even then, Topley's still tall and barely even faster than medium pace.

What I wouldn't give for a Darren Gough or Simon Jones in this attack :(

Woakes, Plunkett, Jordan, Stokes, the Overton twins, Finn and even Graham Onions and Meaker is a pretty decent pool of players that probably any team bar the Aussies would be delighted with, but there's just so little variety there :(

On the subject of Meaker, I know a few people that have faced him and they say he's incredibly short in person and incredibly skiddy. I was surprised to see him at 6ft 1 on the cricinfo website. He really doesn't look it.

If the batsmen hadn't had such a monstrous collective brainfart last night, this game would STILL have been winnable you know, even after that appalling middle session yesterday afternoon.

One of those that would have been regarded as a no ball ten years ago without hesitation

I do think Moeen Ali is one England need to stick with - he just looks like he has real class with both bat and ball as long as he applies himself. I do think he has potential to be a real genuine all rounder rather than a batsman who bowls a few dobbers, and not only an all-rounder but an all rounder who could average 40 with the bat in his career.

Great 100 especially under these circumstances. Well played by him however this ends.

Anderson on 0 after 50 minutes too. Love it!

England have found some potential stars in Robson, Ballance and Ali. And with Stokes to also come in, the new look England look good.

Great innings in the circumstances.

Unbelievable scenes

Fair play Sri Lanka, no way that England deserved anything from the Test.

Oh Jimmy what have you done?

Can't say Sri Lanka deserved it after yesterday but I really dislike this lot after the ODIs so bolllocks to them, they don't deserve a series win.

Brilliant game. Boring for some watching them block for a long time but this is what makes Test cricket great for me, a tense game right to the end.

Well played both teams.

Wow, can't believe England managed to hold on for so long. Seems like it was a brilliant innings from Moeen Ali.

I'm glad Ali got his ton, hopefully Cook does the right thing now he can't hide behind a draw.

Cook is a bit fecked I'd say. Poor captaincy and pretty much everyone else scored runs except him.

Getting out 2nd to last ball after surviving so long would break many a man I think. Tough way to end.

Cook has got to resign his captaincy but I suspect he will still be in charge when India come over

Feel so sorry for Jimmy - you can tell even despite the nasty act and all the chirp that really he's just a top guy that loves playing cricket.

Oh my god. Peter Moores talking on Sky.

He just is Alastair Cook, no wonder he got the job.

Apparently Cook was 'magnificent' today, which is great. We've got a captain whose magnificent when he doesn't have to set a field, or bat, or actually captain.

Cook the only member of England's top 10 (!) to fail to pass 30 in any innings of the Sri Lanka series.

He's not going anywhere, just said 'in for the long haul' on Sky.

If he loses to India then the ECB will have a decision to make. So far they've backed him but I'd say if he continues to struggle there will be loud calls for him to be dropped.

His captaincy is awful. Warney may have some personal agenda, but Cook should've lost the captaincy after the Ashes.
