Cricket

Feel so happy seeing Gill play the way he has. I remember 3 years ago you and me were discussing about how he would be the next great Indian batsman in the u19 WC thread
Yup! I remember that too. Looks so composed and good. Struggled against Cummins and Starc but the way they were bowling, they'd have troubled any batsman in the world.

Didn't see his batting live but the highlights looked really really good. All good cricket shots. Nothing crazy.

You guys think he is very good? High hopes?

It's been a while since I followed India in test cricket. Can anyone explain why the test team is so different from ODI? I realize test cricket is different but that different? Surely players like KL Rahul, Dhawan, Ashwin are good enough for both/all 3 forms of cricket?

As good as India's bowling has become, the batting has become equally mediocre. Expect more from Pujara.

I don't follow white ball cricket much, but I think most teams have as much difference between the test and white ball lineups as India do

The game has changed completely such that I'd say T20 and tests are a different sport.

Look at the differences between tests and ODIs that India / Aus played right now.

The bowling attacks got carted in the ODIs and the same bowling attacks are now making the batsmen look like amateurs.

With ODIs / T20s becoming so heavily favored to batters (pitches, bigger bats, reverse stances) there is a big difference between most teams in tests and limited overs now.

Our tail won't last 5 overs. It's Rahane or nothing here.

Batting 4th will be a fun watch

Pant's innings really was crucial in changing the momentum. Looked really comfortable too.

Agree. We don't have any batsmen who can take the game away in a session. Pant is a real talent (Sehwag like) and he needs to be nurtured.
Also think Jadeja is severely underrated with the bat.
He should be in the conversation for the great all rounders IMO. 35 batting average and 25 bowling average is no joke.

I think this team is very well balanced. Replace Siraj with Shami, Kohli at 4, Rahane at 5 and the team looks pretty good IMO. The batting is deep with Ashwin coming in at number 8 and the bowling looks very well balanced too. There are a number of youngsters in there too like Gill, Pant, Agarwal (young as in new to the team) and even guys like Bumrah are pretty young. The main issue with the squad right now is that the tail gets bundled out in a few overs.

Cummins is a heck of a bowler.
Used to think Rabada was the next big bowler. But I think Cummins is right now the best bowler since steyn. This is no slight on Rabada who is amazing, but Cummins is just that good last few years.

Where does Bumrah rank?

Elite category.
Starc, Cummins, Rabada, Bumrah, Shami are all on the same plane.
The others are just a touch below. Ofcourse whoever you prefer depends on you.

And these are genuinely good and talented bowlers. They'll do well against the mid 2000's beast batting line-ups too.

very hard to choose between the bowlers. They’re all very good. I would have Cummins alone as a separate tier.

I don’t know where the English pacers sit, they’re at very different stages of their careers and each has different records home and away. I don’t know where Starc sits either because he’s pretty inconsistent when I see him. Some days he’s world class.

Bumrah hasn’t bowled in Asia though. Shami bowls well everywhere. Ishant has done very well recently too and should be on that list somewhere.

Cummings has been the World’s premier fast bowler for the past 3 or 4 years if you ask me. Starc’s not bad either mind. India have done well to get this lead because again there were some wafty shots outside the off stump played by multiple batsman. On another day India could have been all out for less than 150. Both these good sides have weaknesses to exploit.

England have a much better arsenal of genuine fast bowlers than the last time they toured India or Australia. Archer has all the talent in the World, but is still finding his feet in test cricket. Wood will be handful on faster pitchers like in Australia, but is injury prone with that action of his. Arguably the best English quickie, is one you might not have heard of, Ollie Stone. He‘s as quick as anything in test cricket right now, has good accuracy and he swings it both ways. Been unlucky with injuries the past 2 years. If he stays fit the next 18 months then he’ll become a household name. Certainly an exciting genuine fast bowler, one to watch out for.

England can have any pace bowlers and it'll still take a minor miracle for you to win in India or Australia.

Awful lack or English players in the icc world xi for t20 and odi considering they pretty much dominated the past 5 6 years or so

I really hope we win a test or two here and get to play in test championship. We have a very good test team. In next 10 months after playing Australia, we will play 9 test matches against England. I feel this is a perfect time to play a stable 11 for the next year or two.

This will be my preferred test 11
Aggarwal/Rahul/Rohit
GILL
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Pant
Jadeja/Pandya (when he starts bowling again)
Ashwin
Shami
Ishant
Bumrah

Opening is a concern but our bowling is too good. I will continue playing Gill for all the next test matches and groom him. I hope we stick with playing 5 proper bowlers and Jadeja has shown he can very much bat. I will also not drop Ashwin irrespective of how the condition is. He has proven this series he is a champion bowler. I will also stick with Pant instead of saha. I will love if Shaw fixes his technique and takes the other opening spot, he needs to play domestic cricket and then come back. We may lose some more games but we have to back this core and we will end up doing well in long term.

They put up a decent fight last time round and England’s batting is looking far more solid than then. If I’m not mistaken England are more or less the only side to have given India a real fight in their home series in the past decade. Short memory you have.
England are underrated by many on here. This is not the 80’s or 90’s. Of course India are favorites, but I think the result of the next series in February will depend on the type of pitches prepared and how England deal with the Indian spinners. Also, with India’s new ball attack it must be tempting to produce bowler friendly pitches, but that will suit England as well.

England lost 4-0 last time. England had a great team in 2012 when they won(and India correspondingly had a team on its last legs) with two brilliant spinners, the perfectly balanced batting and pace bowlers who'd just figured out sub-continental conditions. England have none of that this time. I think they are putting together a good, promising batting unit now but playing India at home is like Nadal at the French -- as long as we have 2 world class spinners operating which we almost always do. It'll be India winning 4-0 again - especially with 2 of the matches in Chennai due to covid.

Australia were fantastic in 2018 in India and lost 2-1 in one of the best series in recent memory.

When was the last time we lost a test series at home? Wasn't it against England in 2011. People can say pitch this pitch that but that is a superb record.

Yes - England 2012(I think it was 2012). I am pretty sure we haven't even lost a solitary test, outside of the Australia series.

6:05 for Ajinkya Rahane's century and wonderful celebration.

Where do you guys think Jaddu ranks amongst our best allrounders? Best ever or 2nd to Kapil? Hes been incredible over the last few years. The man is clutch and my favourite Indian player over the past 10 years.

Pakistan’s batting is strange even by our standards. Aside from the usual fall of wickets, a run rate of just over 1 to get to 51 off 43 overs :wenger:

Bizarre scorecard.

rahane with another dumb runout..gifted Australia here.

Don’t know who called that run for India, but completely unnecessary in the circumstances.
