I think this is my favourite song ever, The man who sold the world by Nirvana, originally by David Bowie. I don't know why I find this song peerless. Nothing describes sorrow better than this song that reminded me a painting I had seen years before and took ages to find again, Munch' Scream

I put it in a spoiler so as to not overweight the page with youtube vids

Love that version. What an album Nirvana unplugged is.

Agree with All Along the Watchtower Nilsson, one of my favourite songs.

I think this is class as well, Tool´s interpretation of Led Zeppelin´s No Quarter:

I love Rage Against the Machine´s cover-album "Renegades" as well, these three songs in particular:

A few favourites, there are many more though:

I never knew that was a cover. Nine Inch Nails eh? Wouldn't have had a clue unless i looked it up, sounds suicidal when they sing it though. Also in the live version i've got, the bloody pianist is duffing up the notes.

Much prefer this Cash version. He sounds like he's about to break down into tears with regret for some of the things he's done. Brilliant song.

Absolutely spot on. The emotion that he is able to convey in that song is just brilliant. The desperation, guilt, regret in his voice makes this one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Johnny Cash = Genius.

Hendrix could really knock out a cover. Hey Joe and especially All Along the Watchtower are pretty decent efforts...

I watched a programme about Hendrix a while back and they said that he played an amazing live cover of segeant peppers lonely hearts club band the day after the album came out!

Aye the guy sure knew his way about the freboard...

Personally the footage of him doing "Like a Rolling Stone" is some of the best, you can see he loves the song the way he's playing it and he nails it, naturally.

fecking hell some of these are bloody awful!!!

I dont agree with most of these versions.

in my opinion - covers that are better include

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
All along the watchtower - Hendrix
Johnny Cash - Hurt (although i like the NIN one)
I just dont know what to do with myself - White Stripes
I Fought The Law - The Clash
The Sign - Mountain Goats
Elvis Presley - Blue Suede Shoes
Soft Cell - Tainted Love

I like both the Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright versions of Hallelujah equally but thought I'd post the Rufus one.

A couple of others that I like (as they are a bit different)

Arcade Fire's take on Guns of Brixton

Tv On The Radio do Mr Grieves barbershop style

Good thread, I was thinking of it as soon as I read the other one.

In response to a few posts in here, I don't personally think a cover has to be better than the original for it to be decent or worth listening too. Anyway, here's a few I think are pretty good.

Santana's 'Black Magic Woman'
Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'Higher Ground'
Deep Purple's 'Hush'
'Step On' by The Happy Mondays

the pixies - winterlong
richie havens - morning morning
rod stewart - my way of giving
terry reid - superlungs
spirit - like a rolling stone

I'm undecided on that 'Head On' video. It's a quality song, and the Pixies don't play it badly, but I'd much prefer the J&MC version personally.

This is my favourite pixies cover:

It's majestic! Another favourite is of course 'Winterlong' --

I had a kind of 'fantasy gig of all time' experience back in June when both The Pixies & Neil Young played at an outdoor concert in Stockholm. I tried to find their 'Winterlong' from that gig, but no luck so far.

In honour of your brilliant username ("...this human form, where I was born, I now repent...") here's their 'Caribou' from that concert so you can hear how absolutely awesome they were (at 3:50 - the 'Hey!' is fantastic too) --

:nervous: Sorry for going off topic...

some great shouts there....

johnny cash hurt has got to be top tho - a much better version and you really buy into the emotion.....

this was one of his final releases wasn't it??

That's probably the only cover posted in this thread, maybe with the exception of Twist and Shout, which is actually quite a way better than the original. He makes it his own.

Dunno, I think Buckley's Hallelujah and Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower are both arguably greater than their originals... Tainted Love too

Firewind's cover of 'Maniac' by Michael Sembello

Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal

this might be the greatest cover ever for me...completely takes the song to new level from the original, taking a mildly pleasant ringo tune thats nice nice to a full blown emotional paen to the need of friendship...shits all over the beatles version and you cant say that often...and its live and it rocks likes a motherfecker full of soul.

im a bit hammered.
