No, and the fact that he's found these youngsters is because his hand has been forced.

Rashford, Valera etc wouldn't of got a look in earlier this season. We played Fellaini upfront against Liverpool ffs.

No because once Rooney is back, it will be same old. Also he is turning us into Arsenal with the lowered expectations around the place.

Let's enjoy this fluke stroke of luck we are having at the moment. It won't last and we will see zombie football back soon. I like LvG , but he is not the manager who will ever challenge for the league with his philosophy!
Giving LvG another season will mean we pass on Mourinho! Is there ever going to be more mental decision to make in the current climate, especially with the shadow of Pep looming large over the horizon? Watching the young ones has been great ,but the bigger picture will be pretty gloomy if we stick with LvG!

Keeping Van Gaal for another year - benefits column:

1. He will get the chance to see out the 3 year process.
2. The youth players are more likely to benefit from his presence. *

* This is quite tricky because even though we've fielded academy players in recent weeks, it was only after the manager's hand was forced. Yes, he did trim the squad, but - there was a distinct reluctance to usher them organically through the course of the season - especially in minor cup games - like Fergie did through the years; and if it weren't for injuries to Rooney, Fellaini, Darmian and Smalling (among others) - the likes of Rashford, Varela, Fosu-Mensah would be sidelined. Part of a predetermined plan, or mitigating circumstances forcing the issue?

Letting Van Gaal go at the end of the season - benefits column:

1. Availability of a top class alternative who is a better manager than Louis. *
2. Hopefully, no more one step forward, two steps backward - and umpteen false dawns rendering everyone bipolar.
3. We're more likely to succeed under said alternative.
Bah, too many to name. Let's leave it at that.

* This is extremely important, and one of the biggest reasons why United needs to be decisive. José Mourinho will not wait for another season. Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti will not be available. Seeing out the 'process' and appointing Simeone won't make much sense given the variance in tactical approach. I'd bet my house on Pochettino joining Madrid next season, if not this summer the way things are brewing. Blanc signed a contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain. Tuchel will not void his contract at Dortmund. So you'll essentially be stuck with a rookie manager in Ryan Giggs.

If you appoint José in the summer - even if he implodes in 3 years, that'll align almost perfectly with Ancelotti leaving Bayern Munich, or Tuchel's contract expiring at Dortmund. Logistically, moving on from the Van Gaal era will be a rational decision, as much as a sporting one. Also, winning the Europa League or the domestic cup doesn't signify escalating success - Chelsea won the European Cup under Di Matteo, and the Europa League under Benítez - but in terms of broader perspective, they were unlikely to lead them to sustained success. Also, Van Gaal has been a false prophet at United. Most of us were convinced that the needle was pointing upwards through the late stretch of games in 2014/ 2015 - but we never really took the next step - if anything, we regressed as a team when for all intents and purposes - the platform was set. Don't discount the possibility of the team regressing further as he tinkers with another billion details next season before stumbling upon a semi-successful formula (this season mirrors the last one in that respect). Ultimately, it's about conviction and you nebulous assessment of his tenure so far. Wasn't convinced we'd amount to much this season under him, and am not convinced we'll do much next season if he's retained - if anything there'll be cascading failures. And that's unlikely to change even in the face of us chancing a cup or two. It's about overall progression, not stop-start motions and getting lucky.

Have to say he's pretty much turned my opinion round.

We need someone with the kind of balls he's showing right now, and I do trust him with young players.

"I already hope he does", that's a weird sentence.

"I already hope he does...convince me to give him another season"?

A lot of people seem to be riding the crest of euphoria due to the recent results but the last few games can not detract from the insipid football that has been played under van Gaal. The signs came creeping back in the Watford game so it's a bit early to get carried away. I can't see the point seeing as he's due to retire anyway. I think we should say thank you very much and move on next season so we can start to plan long term.

No.. This squad should be top in this current league and we are 5th. Better manager better results. His time is up. Thanks for the the exciting youth and funny press soundbites.

Even if he miraculously got us in the CL and won a trophy, he would still retire in 2017, so whats the point in keeping him, missing out on mourinho, when in 2017 we will likely be stuck with Giggs as the manager? This summer is basically our only chance to get it right and bring in a top manager. Another year will bring the same struggles as this year and will only hurt us.

I'd never reached the stage in which I'd given up on him anyway.

Perhaps I'm blind, but I think I still always saw the potential of a caterpillar into a butterfly story. I did expect better this season I admit, but I never expected the full completion of our evolution until next season.

I think my post Fergie expectations were a bit low, or at least lowered after Moyes. Van Gaal appears to have gotten to know the club from top to bottom, and I also feel he has been let down by some key players too.

Ultimately, if we are competitive, I can wait another year, or even more, for some of the best kids we've had in years to have a shot at forming a nucleus of our next great side. I do believe that that is a more likely route to us rivalling the likes of Barca anyway - building a team from scratch, with lifelong friends raised in the same football philosophy etc.

I have strong belief that the likes of Varela, Fosu, RoShaun, Axel, Shaw, CBJ, Rashford can form not only a great team, but with a spirit and identity which makes a huge difference from teams like Madrid. And with these kids getting a chance, I can't help but think some of the even more talented ones are still to come, so I'd hate to see the door closed before the likes of Angel Gomes and Callum Gribbin get a go. If they can all come through, with the right signings to support them, we could be cooking the new great team in a post- Messi era, and there is a chance, not a certainty admittedly, that we could sacrifice that in exchange for short term success.

"I already hope he does", that's a weird sentence.

"I already hope he does...convince me to give him another season"?

"I already hope he does get another season". I guess it's the opposite of the final option in that it means nothing would convince you not to give him his 3rd year? Maybe.

If we win the league, fair enough.

Otherwise it's a simple story about a man who has shown throughout his career he simply doesn't have the ability to learn from his mistakes. If he doesn't at least get us into the Champions League, he deserves no sympathy at all for his time here regardless of winning an FA cup.

He really has proven he isn't truly special as a manager during his time with us, many managers could have done the same job and I expect quite a few could have done a better job. That's a big disappointment, but it's the way it is. So unless he can magically deliver, he's got to make place.

If we end up with a title challenge (unlikely) or top 4 plus a trophy (possible) then I would be happy to stick with LvG

I want Mourinho as our next manager but I also don't think we should sack LVG.

Let his contract run out and then approach Mourinho next summer. If he decides he's waited too long, we approach someone else.

I'm a huge Jose fan.
And I am worried how LVG will handle Guardiola, Klopp, Pochettino next season.
So, in an ideal World, Jose would be our manager next season.

However, if LVG can win us the title this year, how can you sack a manager for winning you the title (Madrid excepted)?

Top four, with some good results, rather than just scraping it over City/Arsenal in freefall, or the Europa League and I want him to stay. Either way he'll have finished the season strongly and got us in the Champions League. That's enough for me to feel he's a better option next season than taking a punt on someone else.

If he wins the PL then he has definitely earned it but I would argue that it's only because our competitors have been so awful. In another season we'd be way out of the top 4 by now.

If he gets top 4, yes. He'll further cull the squad to move on stagnant, injury prone players like Jones, Rooney, Valencia and co, while Carrick might retire and bring in a couple of quality players while keeping the younger generation in mind.

We are sitting on a potential gold mine of talent coming through the academy and its largely thanks to Warren Joyce developing them and Van Gaal giving them the opportunity. I don't want Mourinho coming in and pushing them out of the door on loans to buy 4 or 5 geezers while retaining Rooney and adapting a short term philosophy.

If given patience and time, we have TFM, Varela, Bo Jack, Januzaz, Lingard, Rashford and Pereira all establishing themselves here to go with Martial, Memphis and Shaw. That's an excellent organic growth for a club and fits well with how we have succeeded in the past. Academy players + young players who are groomed to become stars.

Never

The vote isn't very fair though as I don't particularly want Jose, but I don't want that bollok slapper anywhere near our club anymore.

If we could get him out tomorrow, I'd be queueing up to hand him his coat.

All the yes people here are deluded. Lets see you stand by your vote come 3-4 games time when we've thrown away 4th spot yet again.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I will be.

No, his football is the worst i've ever seen, even hoofball has some exciting moments,... in its own way, the philosophy is a gutless, risk free, bore the opposition into mistake style, I really like LvG as a bloke, I'd always buy him a drink if ever saw him out and about but he has to go.

My vote was "If we win the PL".

We're NOT going to win the PL but IF we did I don't see how we could sack LVG.

But since we're not going win the PL we should thank LVG for his services and sign up Jose. Clear as day.

The man's only got 1 yrar left before retirement anyway, it's not like he had 15 years to give if we give him extra year

I think the retirement argument is irrelvant.
If Guardiola was available for 12- years, I'd take him over LVG (for 15 yrs).
In any case, would anybody, want to sign up LVG for 15 years? This would be madness.
Even Guardilola, Mourinho or Ancelotti wouldn't get a 15 year contract.

I have hope with the youngsters. Let's just put it this way.

He can feck right off. Get someone in and target the title, not "aim" for the top 4 with a lame duck manager.

LvG shall always go at the end of the season.

The injuries saved him otherwise you know the score with Rooney upfront and Fellaini as a 10.

Dead Man walking ......... his time is done here, I was an avid supporter of LvG's but he's disappointed big time , this is the strongest in-depth Premier League but with the weakest actual challengers and we're well off the pace .....

Oh,. and G*d help us if Ryan Giggs gets put in charge, wonderful player, Club servant and all that , United Manager ? No

For the majority of his tenure, I simply have not enjoyed football and worse off, I haven't liked watching Man Utd matches. Performances and overall play have majorly sucked. I am not happy with most of our play. Not many reasons why I'd want to risk another year of Van Gaals Man Utd. At the very best, he can be average with us but I see nothing of a genuine title charge about this guy. Might as well leave on good terms and try and actually go for the title and not settle for mediocrity and low standards. Unless of course we are enjoying seeing the likes of Fellaini in our midfield with their poor version of possession football

If we went on a winning run from here that saw us take maximum points from our remaining fixtures, and win the EL, but come in second in the PL behind Spurs, while playing breathtaking, attacking possession football, which had everyone saying he had finally created a team that transcended his Ajax team of the 90s (if only for a few months), and if all the players, after the final game had a candlelight vigil on the centre circle, holding placards saying "Van Gaal means everything to us" and "the philosophy has made me what I am today", while singing songs about the wonder that is Van Gaal, praising his tactical genius, widsom and leadership, and if a deal was signed that saw Pochettino stay at Spurs for one more season before joining us next summer, then yeah, I could get on board with him staying another season.
 you're not asking for too much TBH. We need compensation. I would accept all of the above only if Robben and Kroos beg to be reunited with Van Gaal at United and Kane was scheduled to follow Pochettino to United........... Oh and Liverpool got relegated.
