Nothing, under no circumstances.

We can't reward him for purple patches and ignore that over two seasons we've largely struggled.

With the quality of players available we'll always go through purple patches. The fact it's been when the manager deviates from tactics/selection tells you it's not structural improvement.

I accepted the crap football in the first season (although the outlier performance at Anfield was a brilliant watch) but I expected both improved results and improved entertainment value in the second season. He's failed, despite his best efforts.

Time to try another manager. With Mourinho available, it's just silly to not offer him the chance.

This- especially the bold part. We'd be stupid to pass up on the chance to bring in a top manager who wants the job just because van Gaal did well enough in the final few months to retain a Champions League place whilst handing some debuts out.
 
No but it doesn't really matter. If Mourinho goes elsewhere, our alternative will be Giggs and therefore LvG will rundown his contract no matter what.

The whole idea behind promoting our best academy products to the first team and giving them playing time is that these players will get the chance to prove themselves in an already competitive first team. Playing youngsters just to say we are giving them playing time means absolutely nothing. Our form, up until very recently, has made everyone set the bar really low. Ferguson never did that, he may preferred to stick with an academy player instead of buying another mercenary to fill a gap he had spotted in the first team but he never did it at the expense of the goals he had set for himself and the club. You would never hear Ferguson say "we finished fourth but it's ok because we gave youth a chance"and that's the big difference here.

LvG had one primary objective at United since the first day he was appointed. That's to create a good possession based side able to compete at a top level. And the truth is that he has failed miserably. The bad shape of both City and Chelsea and the fact that everybody's dropping points all the time somewhat hides our poor season. Let me remind you that we have won less than 50% of our league games thus far. That's not acceptable and there's absolutely no guarantee that things will get better next season.

People keep talking about the ability to impose our passing game to our opponents but only yesterday we saw Watford causing us so much problems with their high pressing. And it's not only Watford, we always have problems getting the ball out of the back with urgency and intent whenever the opponent presses us high in our third. I don't see that good passing game, sorry.

I believe we have stagnated as a club and that we still have a squad that would perform better under another manager with a different style of play.
 
If he manages to salvage top-4 and win one of the other tournaments, then maybe, but that's only because I really don't want Mourinho managing us. If Spurs drop out of the top-4 next season then there should be a good chance to persuade Pochettino.

Of course he could. If he can get us to C.L with our injury-list, by introducing a bunch of kids into the team. Yes - then he deserves one more year.
 
feck no. If Fellaini and Rooney were fit they would be starting and we would be losing.

Jose cant get here fast enough.
 
You have to think about Rashford, TFM, and all the other youngsters Van Gaal is playing, if he gets top 4 and wins a cup I'd keep him just as a gurantee for the youngsters to keep growing, I doubt Mourinho would play them as much.
 
A manager must be in control of his squad, even in times like these where pressure comes from everywhere. Injuries, the board, imperfect transfers, no matter what the reason is a manager must always be able to see the bigger picture and make well-thought out decisions accordingly.

Unfortunately, LVG seems to be winging it for the most parts. It is especially worrying to see that we actually perform the worst when we play close to what he has been preaching, as if when things go opposite of what he wants things work out better. How can anyone have confidence in him then?
 
I also have the fear that Murinho would be mean the end for our current bright prospects. However, LVG has crossed the line far too deep to come back and win over the fans again. I could live with him staying for the last season only if we win Europa league/FA Cup and finish in top 4. But it'll be with regret because I'd like like to know how we would do with Murinho.
 
If we win a cup or the title, and qualify for the CL next season and our play continues to improve then yes 100% I would want him to stay.
 
If he gets us 3rd, wins FA, wins Europa League, I'd let him stay. That'd prove that we went on an amazing run from now on, and that would insinuate that he's finally got it right, we havent had such a run of form since SAF. Anything less and Mourinho in.

No. Top 4 shouldn't be our aim, we should be challenging for the title.
I will give him credit for bringing in the younger players though but we need a manager that can take us to the top again and that's not Louis.
 
If he toured Europe, bumping off all decent alternatives then i would certainly be pursuaded.
 
No. We're still struggling to get top 4, the emphasis on still struggling after last nights game.
 
He would have to assure signing players in quality of Bale, Griezmann and few other game changers. Unfortunately he can't do that as he can't even guarantee a place in Champions League which is pathetic to say the least.

Not looking good for him and he would have to also change himself a little bit, his vision, tactics... there's so many things for him to adapt and improve.
 
IF he puts a great run in from now till the end of the season whilst blooding these youngsters and either takes us to a final in the FA cup or EL then yes he deserves to finish out his contract. He is doing all the right things at the moment so lets hope that continues from now to the end of the season. He definitely seems to have found his mojo again.

If he meets the same criteria that he would have been reasonably expected to meet at the start of the season.

Top 3 finish which would represent progress with a young, newly assembled team, along with a good run in Europe and the FA Cup. Due to his huge failure in the CL a good run in Europe would now be the EL final (rather than say the QF if the CL).

All of this would be meaningless however if the perfect candidate was available to replace him this Summer, as he's already said he's retiring in 2017 regardless.
 
I've put if he wins a trophy, more to do with how brilliant he is with the kids, I don't know, the heart we've been playing with these last few games has made me second think the whole thing, if he left in summer too and we got Jose in I'd like that too.

Those standards are irrevocably high, a double and you'd want him sacked?

I'd agree with you but nothing about Mourinho says long term to me. Actually the only appeal of him, imo, is that we can take 2 years to reorganise the club and then sack him and get Ancelotti or someone.
 
I hated Mournho, then I slightly warmed to the idea of his a manager as we hit our lowest but im right back to not wanting him. My first thought about him was that he goes against everything we have ever believed in as a club and would wouldnt/couldnt ever chance. I somehow managed to convince myself like others that we needed a short term fix but I LVG has recently shown me again that we need to look long term.

The other options are a bit naff too, can't we have a "Let's wait and see" option?
 
It would be hard to reconcile letting him go if he turned in a cup and a Champions League spot (or both in the case of the EL)

5th and a cup double or 4th+ with one of them, given the injury list would be a grand achievement and one which will probably buy him his last season.
 
Between him and Jose Id rather keep LvG. That's no improvement in terms of the United playstyle.
 
Top 4 finish and a cup trophy, he can stay for 1 more season.
 
I'd be open to him seeing out his contract if he gets us into the CL, which is the minimum requirement.
 
Top 3 and break up with Rooney. Done deal.

Also helps if he does a few more sideline dives or other antics.
