I think we all know its almost certain he will be replaced next season but what would it take for him to convince you to give him one more year?

I'm enjoying the fact that we have played a lot of youth players in the last few games and the performance in Europa League and Liverpool showed some signs of positivity. If Van Gaal could lead us to top four would you be against him staying another year? If we played in a style similar to Midtylland and Liverpool for the rest of the season? If he continued to bring youth through?

Would he need to win a trophy to have your support? Or has he burnt all his bridges?

So is there anything he could do between now and the end of the season to convince you to give him one more year?

No, there's absolutely no point in keeping a manager here for one more year if we can get a mid to long term, top class replacement this summer.

We've been poor for far too long IMO. As much as I like him, it will be very, very difficult for him to convince me to want him to stay another season (not like he has anything to prove to me anyway ).

I hope we get top 4, hopefully a FA cup/EL would be mint - for him to stroll off into the sunset and hand over to someone else.

But yeah, even last night, we should have lost. Which would have changed the general tune (not you, OP) on the message board considerably (again).

It's a tough one. But I want him gone come season's end.

Edit: also what Cina said - spot on.

Unfortunately his previous record before the last 4 games means he has to go at the end of the season. I honestly don't believe he will, though.

No, his destiny is in the hands of other managers' availabilities.

No. We were supposed to challenge for the title this season. That was his remit.

I've been on the borderline for a while. The Southampton game I paid about fifty fecking quid for had me livid. But since then I've seen united play good football, win games, progress in competitions and play youngsters. If that carries on extend his contract for all I care.

The problem is he will mess up things again. That's the most annoying part about his time here.

If he won the FA cup, the Europa and got us ahead of City in the league, whilst playing like we did against Arsenal and Midgkkhasuyksi, then we'd be foolish to let him go.

I'm convinced he'll still be here next year now. The club will want to follow through on their plan to bring in Giggs next year.

If we get top four, I agree. The board seem desperate for him to carry on until next season and then give Giggs a go. It's worrying tbh

No, because I think he's complacent. When it's balls-to-the-wall he can pull out a couple of good results but then when pressure subsides it's always back to phoned-in, limp-wristed performances. As if he has the energy to get his team's collective arses in gear when there's particular pressure to do so but when that immediate imperative subsides he struggles.

Not everyone is an Alex Ferguson and can maintain that energy and drive required to succeed at a club like United in their senior years. If, as seems to be to be the case, that Van Gaal struggles to motivate his players/himself unless there's pressure to do so then I don't see how he can carry on. We need a manager who can get players going every week, not just when there's supporter unrest and then grab a few decent results to placate them.

If he carries on making smart decisions and doesn't do anything totally stupid and pointless then I'd be more open to it. It's just that he has an insatiable desire to do exactly that.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him bring Fellaini and Carrick back together in midfield, or start McNair at right back for no good reason etc.

No, because that just cements the idea that Giggs will follow him and we'll miss out on Jose.

I think he should go regardless but if he stays off the back of just top 4 (or not even that) I'll be pretty disappointed.

2nd and the FA Cup? I couldn't see that as a bad return for the season and I'd still sooner see him gone, but I don't think I'd be too annoyed all things considered.

Not going to happen, mind.

If he got us into the top four or won the Europa League, along with winning the FA Cup, then I would perhaps be 50/50 about him staying next season instead of making the change (provided we played like we have been most of this year more often).

Mourinho is just a better manager though, so I'd be more confident of success with him at the helm.

Honestly, the only was I'd keep him is if we win every remaining game i.e. finish as high as possible and win both cups.

Maybe if he won the FA Cup / Europa League double and threw in a late title push.

So, no.

If he wins the treble and doesn't play Rooney and Fellaini anymore this season, sure.

Unfortunately his previous record before the last 4 games means he has to go at the end of the season. I honestly don't believe he will, though.

He had us top before December's injury crisis, confidence crisis and horrendous slump. What if we go on to win the next 7 games?

That'll put us somewhere in the top 4 and within touching distance of the top. The semi finals of the FA Cup and the Quarter finals of the Europa League.

It's daft to say that there's nothing he could do to justify keeping him for one more year.

If he won the treble he'd have every right. It's really, really fecking unlikely but it's a scenario all the same.

If we went on a winning run from here that saw us take maximum points from our remaining fixtures, and win the EL, but come in second in the PL behind Spurs, while playing breathtaking, attacking possession football, which had everyone saying he had finally created a team that transcended his Ajax team of the 90s (if only for a few months), and if all the players, after the final game had a candlelight vigil on the centre circle, holding placards saying "Van Gaal means everything to us" and "the philosophy has made me what I am today", while singing songs about the wonder that is Van Gaal, praising his tactical genius, widsom and leadership, and if a deal was signed that saw Pochettino stay at Spurs for one more season before joining us next summer, then yeah, I could get on board with him staying another season.

I'm interested in seeing if he will leave Rooney, Felliani and Bastian out when they are fit.

The way we've performed without them should mean that they have to fight for a place. I can see them coming straight back in a the pace going out of the side once again.

Yeah, if all that happens, then he can have another 3 years for all I care. His history with us says that it definitely won't happen.

if he wins a cup and has a very good league run in qualifing for the CL, the club cannot sack him and rightfully so

Probably, he can be quite persuasive, but he won't try because he doesn't care about our opinion on this.

Nah, need a change. A few wins doesn't change anything for me, we were pretty boring/poor for the majority of that yesterday.

Nah. I do like Van Gaal, I really do but he's not up to the job. He's demonstrated that clearly over his two years. He's not going to win the league, he's unlikely to win the EL and we'll do well to win the FA Cup. Odds are against us for all three remaining trophies but of course I hope we do as well as we possibly can.

I accepted the crap football in the first season (although the outlier performance at Anfield was a brilliant watch) but I expected both improved results and improved entertainment value in the second season. He's failed, despite his best efforts.

Time to try another manager. With Mourinho available, it's just silly to not offer him the chance.

No, no matter what happens he needs to be replaced this summer with a long term manager, it'll be hard to sign players when they know that the manager singing them is off in a year regardless and they may be stuck playing for Giggs.

Not in a million years, this glitch in the matrix (awesome as it is to see) is a by-product of his squad slashing and injuries. The harsh reality is, it's a fluke. He'll have Fellaini in centre mid quick as a flash, with Valencia in right back, Rooney upfront (or wherever he wants to play that particular day).

I loved the recent run of results, but it's evident that the style of play is inherent and formed in the belly of Utd's youth structure... not forged from LVG's notebook. I hope he's gone as soon as possible so he can't snuff out the light of the youth!

No. He's once again lucked in to finding an exciting team. Without all these injuries we'd likely still be lumbering around with Rooney and Fellaini.
