Could Ronaldo leave in the Summer to play CL football?

Which CL team would agree to buy out a 37-year-old's contract and then offer astronomical wages?

PSG, may be. I don't think any other club would. He's stuck with United for two years.

The idea of Ronaldo choosing a CL club should United fail to make the top-four is ridiculous.
Buy what out? If he wants to leave he will leave and it will be for a minimal fee. His CL record alone guarantees so many suitors

Given how we write things into contracts around top 4 it wouldn't surprise me if Ronaldo has something similar.

He'd probably want to. And if he did, so be it

It’s a team sport, stop pretending that he’s a special case. A lot of people here are acting like he’s bigger than the club and that’s the embarrassing bit. If he’s part of a team that doesn’t qualify for the CL, then he doesn’t deserve it either.

The ‘we’re not worthy/I’d understand if he burned down OT and smashed up the statues on the forecourt’ routine with Ronaldo is a bit of a weird way for a grown adult to behave.
Grown fanboys. Most of them still think he's the best player in the world as well and a lot better than he actually is. It would be a blessing in disguise if Ronaldo left in the summer, but I'm afraid no top team will go near him, so we're probably stuck with him.

CR is on a mission, that of facing his last challenge before retiring and it is to help United to win the PL once again.
However he must know by now that 'mission creep' has set in and its going to take more than his talents to get it going again.

You wanted a challenge Ronnie lad, well you've certainly got a 'doozie'!

Will he stick it out.... his professionalism is going to be put to the test like never before?

Think I saw you posting something similar in another thread. I questioned this position but you never explained it.

Us being dragged through a really poor CL group really does mean nothing at all. In fact, as noted in many quarters of the pundit arena, it’s a negative. It papers over cracks for the board and gives them another reason not to pull the trigger on Ole.

From a purely footballing perspective, Ronaldo has not improved our performances in any way...he was just become the focal point of our attack and as such, he has scored important goals. Our level has remained the same except the goals are coming from him because we have changed our approach to allow him to be that player. It’s self fulfilling. This is in no way evidence of the fact that without him we would be knocked out- without him last season we played similarly shite and still ended up in a EL final.

What is a concern is Ronaldo fans who are saying-“enjoy the ride...GOAT is back...just be happy”.In my very humble opinion, talents like Greenwood, Rashford, Amad, Elanga, Sancho would be blessing on any top side in Europe and along with a peak Bruno and a confident Donny behind and proper coaching be developed into a lethal frontline that is fluid and that can defend from the front and that set up United for years to come.

...that ain’t happening while they languishing on the bench watching Ronny boost his CL goal tally dragging us through games against really mediocre European sides.

your short term view is fine if you are just a fan of Ronaldo but a little perspective doesn’t mean you aren’t supporting him. I just want him used for the benefit of the team, not using the team to benefit Ronaldo.

I didn't reply because your logic is absurd. It's a negative to qualify to the next round because it papers cracks? I don't buy it.

That wasn’t my logic though...that was common sense...it makes no difference if we get out of shit group and then get whipped by the first good team that comes along...because we are still shite regardless... all Ronaldo’s heroics dont change that. So for me, the quickest and best way to solve the issue is to get a coach in that focuses on the other great developing talent we have up front so we don’t have just one way of playing..ie. feed Ronaldo. You keep ignoring that central point. I don’t want Ronaldo gone...I just want him used to help the team develop...not use the team to help him reach records. That’s what you’re ignoring.

This is also why I'm ignoring you. We do not play like that at all. Have you seen how selfish Mason plays on the wings? Feeding Ronaldo is hardly ever a consideration for him or the rest of the attack. The real issue is our front line is not cohesive and no one is feeding anyone.

Again not right. Universally acknowledged Ronaldo needs a partner which means a move away from a front 4 to a front 2 and with change of formation in behind. Less places for our many other forward players. Anyway. Let’s leave it there.

See our games. There is a myth that likes of greenwood etc are now feeding Ronaldo which is costing them goals. It has not been the case. Our attack has been acting very selfishly and if they did just feed Ronaldo more we could win more games.

Anyway, our issue is defense and midfield and a clueless manager.

He can leave for all i care. He's 37.

I'm sure he put in some CL clause just in case anyway. No chance he stays next year if we don't qualify for the CL.

Bit surprised to see so many seem to be against him, after the jubilation of him coming back to us. I dont really know what more he could of done for us than he already has done, i mean at current rate he's on for a 40 goal season.
I hope he doesnt read the CAF

If he wanted to go wouldn’t really be that bothered. Would let him go and thank him for the memories as he’s already provided some crackers this season. Move him on then welcome Haaland with open arms. Be better if he stayed of course.

He's our best striker by a mile.
And him leaving simply means we have to spend big there. When we have other glaring issues.

If he doesnt want be here i dont care. He fecked off in his prime.

What makes you think Haaland would join, the club has proven to be completely clueless with all things football. The board, the manager and staff.

At 37, provided his wages stay at current level, I don’t see any CL-clubs going for him even if he is an exeptional goal scorer.

Ronaldo at this stage of his career is like the ultimate luxury player. If you got a good, solid team that can provide assists, he will absolutely score goals. The downside for him is those kind of CL teams already have a main striker.

I see him staying regardless of how we do this season.
So in other words City would be perfect for him?

I don't think people are against him.

He's the best player on the planet. Even at 37 he shouldnt have to waste his time here at United when we show no ambition, throw away an entire season for the sake of Ole and the CEO's ego, with the prospect of maybe playing for Brendan Rodgers in the EL next season.

Messi at least went to a club that is trying to win things. You can't question PSG in terms of their on the field ambitions, however badly and seedily they're run as a club.

Narrative turned. Joined United for a challenge. Leaves when its a challenge.

I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t arrive next summer and it isn’t already organised. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is also maybe part of the reluctance to get rid of Ole.

Because no player is bigger than the team. If United don't go to the CL, as football is a team sport he is also at fault. Should he just run away that just shows character, it means instead of trying to solve the problem with the team he is just interested in improving his CL stats, which begs the question why would any top team be interested in such player? Say what you want about Messi but he genuinely wanted to help rebuild Barca even after those 8-2 and other humiliations.

And again and again, I know some people will never understand (or rather never even try to understand) this, but his arrival did not improve the team until now. People keep saying "it's not his fault blah blah" are ones who don't understand that football is a team sport. You score a goal everyone in the team had their bite, you concede a goal everyone again have their bite on it. The idea of attackers just score and defenders just defend is thought processes of 20~30 years ago football.

Pretty sure he said he joined United to win things.

But either way, finishing fourth is not a challenge that should be of interest to any footballer, let alone the best in the world.

No i find it funny because Messi was lambasted for joining PSG in contrast to Ronaldo.

I'm 100% sure that Ronaldo didn't join United to wallow around in the Glazer/Woodward inspired mudpits.

United, under this regime, seem to derive some kind of sadistic pleasure from torturing the fan base by deliberate intransigence

Playing decent footy and winning are what they should be there for

He has a two-year deal, right? I doubt anyone would pay a fee for a 37-year-old that would tempt us to sell so no.
If Kylian Mbappe leaves for Real Madrid,PSG will come in for Cristiano. They would want to team up Ronaldo with Messi….I can really see it happening….

Agreed. Having Neymar, Cristiano and Messi together would be something their billionaire owners could say they've done that nobody else has.

Agreed.

Watching Ronaldo in the big matches this season and in the Euro imo Ronaldo can't no longer start in the big matches as a #9 against the top or good teams.

Him doing almost nothing defensively or in the buildup phase basically leaving his team to play with 10 men, especially off the ball. Same with Portugal we'll got thrashed by any good team we'd come across this season if we keep playing him as a #9. You can play with 10 men against a lesser team but it's just impossible to win when you play with 10 men against a team as good as or is even better than yours.

The thing is aside from like clubs who are just happy to be in the CL. Not any of the clubs out there would be interested in buying a 37 year old player that is serious about winning the CL. People who seriously believe that City wants Ronaldo has no understanding how Pep plays his team.

Madrid would rather spend money on Halland or Mbappe.
Bayern already has Lewandowski and why disrupt a team that is already perfectly functioning.
He does not fit the philosophy of how Dortmund, Barcelona, Liverpool and Ajax play (same as City).
Chelsea maybe(?) but what about Lukaku?
PSG is possible but they need to offload some of the players if they are planning to make a move.

So where is he going to go?
Mourinho would sign him

I love Ronaldo, but everyone expected him to come and be an instant hit. He probably would have been if we weren't so shit as a team right now. He's a very short term solution, even if he somehow keeps going for another three or four years. I know everyone says "Ronnie is different" but eventually those joints are going to go and it won't matter how many times he takes his shirt off after that happens.

I'd hope in that situation he would stay and help us win the Premier League one last time, but until the mess the club is in gets sorted that's nearly impossible. It would make for a better legendary story than "Messi wins CL with PSG, as expected." He's already adored here, so if even if we say that he's selfish there's a lot of appeal to stay here and keep getting treated like a god.

As others have said; would he trade staying at a United who were domestically ambitious for a team that, although they would be in the CL, don't have much hope of winning it?
How can you say he's not an instant hit? He is our top goalscorer. Without him we would already be in the Europa League or worse

Agreed.

I don’t think he can start as a winger in a big game either.

The narrative “without him we would be in the EL”...is an odd one when 1) we might very well still be in the EL if we lose to Villarreal and 2) the achievement you are speaking of is him guiding us to barely qualifying out of what was recognised universally as a low level CL group.

So we are scraping through a much easier group than last seasons champions league...that’s not improvement we are worse.

We have less points in the league than last season after the same amount of games...that’s not improvemen we are worse.

We are out of the League Cup...that is not improvement...we are worse.

So how has Ronaldo been a saving grace? He has not been the cause (Boldest to protect feelings) of the complete capitulation we have have witnessed but only the most hardened Ronaldo mug owning CR7 tattoo enthusiast would say that having to change around the team and flirt with formations and ask other players to change their games and benching other talents to accommodate him has not been “part” of the problem - part of the reason we look so poor...

and I for one hope the new regime..whoever they are...see the fuking immense potential and pace and technical ability in the rest of our young forward line and coming through our youth setup...fuk out Jesse and mata and Pogba and anyone else who doesn’t want to be here...play to the strengths of Sancho and VDB and Greenwood and Rashford and Bruno...bring through Hannibal and Amad and Elanga...and use Ronaldo as a plan b...because a plan a of Ronaldo up top means two more years of only playing to his strengths. Utd need to arrest the decline now...not embrace it out of nostalgia.

Ronaldo has kept us in the Champions League so far. And even if we lose to Villareal we can still qualify if we beat Young Boys in Old Trafford.

I never said he didn’t...I said we may still go out so it’s a bit premature and that even if we qualify- we should qualify...we have a vastly superior squad to any team in that group. It’s not an achievement- it should be a given. I also said it doesn’t count for anything because in the broader context the team is not performing at all. That’s a problem that needs to be addressed and in addressing that problem one needs to ask whether or not we would need to be bailed out so often if we used our options better.

That I don't know because I haven't seen that yet. Theoretically a winger is usually far less crucial than a #9 in how a team play, especially off the ball. That's why he's been used as a LW in most of his career I think.

Ronaldo is a part of the problem, he's another passenger, if we had a properly functioning team then it wouldn't be an issue. He was bought by the board, I wonder many signings were actually made by Ole.
