Aye, and just to clarify I'm not suggesting that the wages spent mean anything when it comes to someone like ETH, who has the toughest job of the top 6 atm and the wage bill has no relation to where United should end up (even though I also imagine the United wage bill is significantly smaller than it was this time last season).

Just that when there's a few teams above you it's hard to bridge that gap. As you said though they've gone players in a way Spurs usually haven't in recent times, and from afar it looks like they've offered him the control they've been hesitant to grant to other managers in the past (though this is probably to do with the stadium situation that africanspur mentioned above and his status). I like Conte a lot and think they've done well in the market, but even with those positives and having Kane and Son my gut feeling is that they'll narrowly miss out on top 4.

Is nothing an achievement besides winning the league?

Spurs had been on a long downward curve before Conte came in. Going backwards under Poch, finishing 6th in 19/20, 7th in 20/21, were 9th when Nuno got the boot. Does no one remember his final game in charge? Did that look like a top 4 squad? I don't know why people continually underplay the impact Conte has had at Tottenham.

If Eth achieves that this season then it will be regarded as an achievement. I think top four for Spurs considering their form for last few years is a great achievement.

It was actually an achievement considering the circumstances back then and for the last few years.

Not at all but was it that amazing they got 71points? I didn’t say he’s done poorly but that top four place was definitely what they hoped when they signed him - he’s now been backed heavily. Can he get them back to back top four finishes for the first time since Poch (I think?) or win a domestic cup.

I don’t think you can say he’s worked miracles there? A manager of his calibre I feel he’s done as they’d have hoped. Again not done badly but people on here acting like he took Leicester or Brightons squad into the top four. Spurs had a good squad they just hired two terrible managers before Conte.

You have arguably World's top 2 managers in the EPL and one of them has a open cheque book. So it is hard to win an EPL title or Domestic Cup for that matter. So 3/4 spot in EPL is really an achievement. Calibre will help you only when you have level-field but over the longer run the team with good squad always win.

No matter how u put it he is a top top coach, even if he doesn't win anything during his time in Spurs. 4th place is a huge achievement already given the budget he has to work with.

Miracles no but an achievement for sure. No less so than if Ten Hag was to finish top four this season.

United don’t really have any top players left though. Most people would have probably said our best player was a keeper or old Ronaldo last season. Holding onto Son and Kane allows Conte to play his style of football and not need to go out, as ETH does, and find players to build a team around.

No way ETH gets top four this season. If he does and it’s at Conte’s expense I’d think the latter will be sacked/implode.

Conte is one of the very few top players who also became a top manager! I like him! It is such a pity we did not get him after the 5-0 vs Liverpool. We'd be contenders now.

To be honest he almost walked away from Spurs, and he probably will walk from Man Utd after 2 weeks given the way how Man Utd operates.

Yeah, it seemed like Tuchel decided Conte hadn't looked him in the eyes when he put his hand out to shake but he had done so and then looked away, it was just Tuchel wasn't yet looking at him at that point. And then Tuchel lost it.

He's done great work on getting improvements out of the likes of Dier, Davies and the wingbacks, as well as defensive shape in general. Feels like they could be serious contenders for 2nd place if they had quality wingbacks, but instead they've got a bunch of guys who are great at one part of the job (Emerson's running, Perisic being 2 footed, Sessegnon makes clever final 3rd runs, Doherty similar but better in the air and Spence can carry the ball) but not all-around good enough. IF Conte sticks around, they could fix that problem next summer. I've never seen Udogie from Udinese play and also it seems to be unclear if he's just going back on loan so can't comment on that. Rest of the squad looks up for it, even the guys like Dier (I'll exclude Davies because he's also great for Wales, I think he's just a quality player in the specific role he plays for both teams as an LCB in a 3 man defence). Also not sure Lloris is so good anymore and Spurs defend deep enough that they might be able to sign someone who can't really pass but is dominant in their box like an Oblak.

I think it will depend on offers on the table. If he gets an offer from one of the giants he will probably take it. But if he gets Spurs in the top 4 again, a decent CL campaign, and maybe a league cup, why not?

Top coaches generally want to be in the best league. Would Conte be happy trundling off to dominate the French league with PSG? Or the German league with Bayern?

His problem is there are three truly world class(maybe 4) managers in this league and one of them has a bottomless pit of $$$ to throw at new players. So realistically he is limited to winning cups.
 
I thought we should have gone for him - he would try his best to win the title in 2 years here rather than being a manager that was here under some sort of long term project.
 
I really like Conte, and I thoroughly enjoyed the heat between him and Tuchel. I hate it when pundits push the whole 'no-one wants to see that' narrative. Yes we do. We absolutely do. I love our matches against Spurs, because we're either beating them comfortably or they turn into these intense, heated battles. Either way I'm entertained. Yesterday was great, result aside.

So much better than this love in between Klopp and Pep. There's just zero atmosphere to their games like they should.

Wenger / Ferguson used to always get spicy, but these 2 can't even admit they are rivals. Sad.

Yeah that’s a good point, my brother actually mentioned the same thing during the Chelsea game. In a system like that elite wingbacks would be massively decisive

He hasn't worked miracles, everyone knew Kane and Son's form would've stepped up the moment Nuno left. What he has done well is made them work as a unit, and exploited their counter attacking potential. Saying that I was surprised Chelsea contained their midfield with ease yesterday.

It'll be interesting to see if they do push on bearing in mind Arsenal bottled it last season and strengthened their forward line as a result. I think Conte can win them a domestic cup but top four is the best they can do with that squad.

he is a 3years manager.
Hardly he'll stay longer than that.
At least that's what his coaching career said so far.
So he is a "short term" manager and one should know since the beginning.
Manchester United did a huge mistake not signing him and still don't understand how you could've him slip away.
Was is like Real Madrid? meaning players crying cause he is too hard working for affirmed stars?
