I think it's probably because it was only on his say-so that any sex between them occured and there was no DNA evidence. She said she didn't remember so didn't give any testimony about it. They could also have decided he was probably lying to help out the other prick's defence.

No. The judge gave them clear instructions on that, and said his ability or the other lad's inability to pay shouldn't come into any conversation about damages.
He also told them not to go overboard but he also told them not to be stingy.

Complicated situation, that. As far as I can make out:
He was the one who claimed they had sex. She believed he was lying about it in an attempt to discredit her, with the implication in court being he was a "patsy" McGregor was presumably paying for that purpose.
But as she couldn't remember what happened, she couldn't be certain they didn't have sex either. So on the basis that he was claiming to have had sex with her at a point where she was too drunk to have consented (because she literally has no memory of it), she therefore pursued him for rape.
People are mad. I used to work with a girl who was very nice generally and was a fan of Chris Brown. One day she tried to argue that Rhianna started it. I was speechless.
Nothing surprising here. He went rogue a good few years back. At this point I actually just blame people around him (Dana, Kavanagh, etc) for not distancing themseleves from him but still trying to turn more money off his back.
