Conor Gallagher | Atlético Player

I think I answered a similar question on the first page.

And I no I’d prefer Mainoo or Wharton myself in the role Southgate had Trent playing in. I’ve agreed with those who are calling for that. I’m just here disagreeing with some of the more over the top takes about Gallagher.

@WeePat mate…

I tried…

I really gave the lad the benefit of the doubt…

And he tries the boy.

But technically, he is a million miles off other options in the squad.

He has no business being out there as 1st choice in the England team.

Within 12 to 18 months chelsea will realise this, and he is gonna be playing for a relegation threatened PL side, or a championship side.

He is your Tom cleverly. No matter how much you wish he had it… he just doesn’t.

Excellent Crouch impression jumping to make himself smaller for the header oppotunity.

To be honest to thought he was generally anonymous, and the right side where he was drifting, was pretty much dead in the first half.

I feel for the guy, he genuinely isn't the right option in that England midfield. Tries hard, works hard, but really he's a level below most of the England squad.

He simply doesnt have the touch and control to play against the best teams in a packed midfield where every loose touch is going to be pressured and pinched. Rice has a little bit faster feet and turns quicker, despite his size and is able to do it. Gallagher does not. Its not through a lack of effort, he just isnt an assured midfielder who can take the ball under his control with one touch and play a good pass with the next, or play first time passes, or dribble past players.

I'm surprised that fans in England still overrate the likes of Branthwaite and Gallagher... Thought we were past it.

Why are you lumping Branthwaite in with him? He's part of the 4th best defensive record in the league at 21 years old. Thats pretty good dont you think?

I just don't see it. Same as the hype for Mount last summer.

Well Mount wasnt behind only Liverpool, Arsenal and City for defensive record as a CB in his first full season

And obviously Tarkowski's experience helped him a lot. Nobody should be expecting a 21 year old to be leading the backline at that age.

If thats not impressive then I'm not sure why you not seeing it matters.

In the comments section of multiple social media/forums. Even on here. His name shouldn't even be mentioned alongside Mainoo's.

I've not seen any sort of clamour from fans to start Gallagher.

Look at the reaction to the news of him starting the game tonight, 99% of the fans were unhappy.

I've never rated him.

That's because he flopped last game. Before that the clamour was to drop TAA for him. Surely I'm not dreaming this up.

I think you are.

There was no clamour for Gallagher to be starting games for England. I don't know where you've imagined that.

Southgate's appalling decision making made him look silly tonight. He's basically Chelsea's Scott McTominay, should never be starting a game at this level of international football for a major nation and to make that crap decision then hook him at half time was embarrassing for all concerned.

What does he expect Connor Gallagher to have done, he's just a lad that will run around and you're playing Slovenia, they're always going to sit off you, it's not a game for bustling around it's a game for forward thinking and a pass.

Southgate lacks any acumen. None whatsoever.

Clamour was probably the wrong word then. But to even consider him ahead of Mainoo seems laughable on first impression. Even in the Mainoo thread there were a couple who were cooling talk of him starting instead of Gallagher.

I mean I'm no Gallagher apologist and certainly stats aren't the be all end all but Mainoo's progression numbers this past year were shocking. If you want to argue Mainoo will go on to be the better player I wouldn't disagree with you but the evidence that he's better right now is pretty flimsy:

I say this as a Chelsea fan who obviously like CG, but his biggest issue is that he doesn’t properly fit perfectly in any of the midfield positions.

He can’t really play in a midfield 2 and he’s not neat and tidy enough to be a #10. He’s really just a runner who does a lot of dirty work for the team.

No problem mate, I honestly don't have the energy anymore to discuss Gallagher

I have said he's the wrong fit for this midfield, and I wouldn't start him but I also think everyone who's piling on him in here with things like 'nothing player' and 'utter garbage' are way over the top.

I'll dip out of this thread now and let the Gallagher chat go where people want to take it :boring:

good signing for athletico. he’s the type of player to thrive under simon.

There are some players that lots of people rate and you can see absolutely nothing in them. He's one of them, he runs around a bit but he's very limited technically. Scores the odd worldwide but that's about it.

The archetypal Simeone player. A grafter that will probably thrive in his system but still a very technically lacking player.

A good squaddie to have but Chelsea have got a decent fee for him - as they often do for their outcasts.

I don't know what Atletico saw in him, very average footballer.

For the Chelsea fan who are sad about him leaving - is that because he’s been with you forever and homegrown? He’s so average otherwise.

Interesting to see another England international playing overseas. Atletico is my dark horse for La Liga this year if Mbappe couldn’t acclimatise like he should.

I thought Gallagher did very well with Crystal Palace on loan. He definitely showed more to his game while there, both technically and physically.

Chelsea has been a collective chaotic mess since Boehly took over so I'd give Gallagher the benefit of doubt and see how he progresses and performs in a proper setup

Have they got a decent fee though? They've immediately been forced to splurge on Felix as part of the deal.
