Swimmers Fall Ill at Games, Blame Pool
More than 50 swimmers competing in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi have reported having gastrointestinal problems.

Commonwealth Games organizers launched an investigation into the water quality at the troubled event's pool on Thursday after reports that over 50 swimmers had fallen ill.

Around 40 English competitors and 12 Australians had complained of feeling unwell after competing at the S.P. Mukherjee Aquatics Complex, with team officials insisting that the problem area was the warm-up pool.

"We must investigate this immediately. If the water is unsafe then clearly you can't swim in it," said Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell.

"Water and food quality is tested. We are concerned if athletes can't perform to their best."

Stomach problems being experienced by swimmers have already forced two Australian medal prospects to pull out.

Olympic bronze medallists Andrew Lauterstein and Hayden Stoeckel failed to start in the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke heats because of "gastro" problems, a team spokesman said.

Illness forced the much-fancied Lauterstein to miss the 50m butterfly final on Wednesday.

Teammate Geoff Huegill, who won silver, said he was upset to hear he had withdrawn and had hoped his friend was well enough to compete on Thursday.

But he told reporters: "We got here today and he went straight from the bus to the bathroom."

England's 100m butterfly specialist Michael Rock also said he had been suffering from stomach problems.

A Canada swimming spokesman said several team members were also suffering from minor complaints but England duo Rebecca Adlington and Fran Halsall had recovered and were cleared to compete, Team England said.

Halsall on Wednesday blamed "Delhi belly" for her failure to qualify for the 100m butterfly final after she took gold in the 50m sprint a day earlier.

She appeared to have recovered and eased into the 50m freestyle semi-finals as fastest qualifier.

I understand it's a matter of national/regional pride for some folks on here, but at what point does it become undeniable that these games have been a sad joke?

Can you please cite these "problems".

Unlike some i actually go to these events.

The athletes flushed thousands of condoms instead of dumping them in the bin....if there's a slight problem with drainage because of this then you can bet your ass how the media will spin it.

-Judges being left behind, and threatening to strike
-Starter blocks moving in the track
-Board in the long jump moving
-warm up pool having an issue, causing lot of swimmers to get sick(Cafeteria food was fine, because only swimmers got ill, not other athletes)
-weightlifting had weighing issues

Many are minor, like I said, I am happy India got the Games, it gives 'us' in the developing world a chance to show, 'we' have the ingenuity, creativity, organisational skills, resources, expertise to do anything the west can do.

But the mentality for many of the nations it seems to be, India is shit, this competition is shit, why was it given to India...etc etc.

So if there is going to be daily bitching, and not just in the tabloids, but media from all the UK media, Aus, NZ, RSA, Canada, then why did they all go along with the idea of giving the games to India? Should have just kept it between themselves, and be done with it.

India has spent an absolute fortune to put on a Games to the best of its ability, and no Games are flawless, but the criticism has become a joke, it seems like people are waiting for feck ups now...

I understand, but I lay the blame at the feet of those who are meant to check up on the Delhi organizers.

Why not give them a timetable that demands pool be finished 6 months ago, and there has to be trial use of the facilities.

For example the Indian national championships should have been done at this venue. If they had, they would have been able to discover and rectify some of the issues.

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) Commonwealth Games Village officials Thursday dismissed as baseless reports of over a dozen Australian swimmers being hit by a stomach bug and a couple of them pulling out of events.

Reacting to reports by an international agency, chief administrator of the Games Village Ashok Kapoor told IANS that the reports were 'baseless'.

'This information is wrong, no Australian athletes and certainly no swimmer is ill,' he said.

A media report Thursday said that more than 50 swimmers from England and Australia had taken ill at the Games Village and the England team had officially sought an assurance over the safety of the swimming pool.

Another senior official from the Village said: 'No illness has been reported, the attendance at the poly-clinic is nil.'

'I have talked to the Chef de Mission of Australian team, none of their players is ill,' the official, who wished to remain unidentified, added.

However, he pointed out that some players are returning home as their events are getting over.

'Players are returning as their events are getting over. That may be the case,' he said.

Fact of the matter is that the media is on a witch hunt atm. Nearly all the so called problems dont infact exist in the first place and the rest are nitpicking. Yes the games haven't been flawless but the media has made a mountain of a moth hole. You think the rest of games (in different countries) go without any problems ? they aren't reported.

With the rising power of India i can already foresee hostility from the west similar to what china gets now. You do know the person who got the nobel peace prize said that china should be colonized for 200 years

Oh dear. Are you under the impression that official denials from the organization responsible and a few vague quotes from unnamed sources as relayed by members of that same organization in any way resembles proof?

Speaking of denial...:wenger:

How about the australian doctor for starters ? :boring:

CWG swimming pools not stomach bug source: Australian doctor

New Delhi, Oct 8 (IANS) Swimming pools in the Indian capital were not the possible cause of the stomach bug which reportedly struck down 16 Australian swimmers, the team’s chief doctor Peter Harcourt said Friday.

He, however, hinted that the training camp in Malaysia could be a possible cause of the stomach bug.

“With the swimming team, it started a little bit earlier so I actually think they might have actually started in their camp in Kuala Lumpur, which would have similar issues. The chances of the pool being the cause of the problem is very remote,” said Harcourt.

While he said that up to 60 percent of travellers to India were down with similar conditions, he maintained that no system exists to completely protect athletes from the local food and water.

“I think it reflects well on the organisers that they’ve created a bit of an enclave here that creates some protection around people as well as the systems that the teams have put in place,” Harcourt said.

Games Federation chief Mike Fennell said Thursday: “If there is something that is unsafe, you can’t swim in that water. We have to deal with it. It’s a matter we have to deal with the greatest of urgency.”

An urgent enquiry was ordered Thursday to ascertain whether the stomach bug, with which a few athletes were suffering, had emanated from the Commonwealth Games swimming pools.

After the swimming test results for any contamination came as negative, Fennell reassured people saying that the “test results from all those pools show that the water is in keeping with all the standards required and there is no problems with the water in those pools”.

“We are satisfied that we have done all the checks necessary,” said Fennell.

The board on the long jump was moving when the athletes were jumping last night. I'm surprised it didn't get called off.

I'm glad Britain sent Prince Charles instead of the Queen. Imagine what Prince Phillip would have said about the delays and the state of the facilities.

what delays ? and the facilities are better.

unlike in manchester where 6 athletes were crammed into one room with a single toilet here there are 2 with a single room. Plus all the sports facilities are top notch...

fact is the so called west cant tolerate the east rising...hardly surprising china and india get bad rep for various different reasons.

I understand your annoyance at the what must seem like constant criticism, regarding the games, yet I think you took my comments slightly out of context.

Sorry for not offering enough detail in my comments. By delays, I refer to the seemingly last minute nature in getting everything ready.

By Facilities, I refer to the state of some of the dwellings in the athletes village, the collapsing roof and the collapsing bridge.
I guess the hasty relaying of the track and the moving long jump board could also be added to the list.

Somebody Like Prince Phillip would probably made some unfortunate remarks about these things. That was the basis of my comments. Prince Phillip constantly embarrasses our nation with his insensitive and borderline racist comments and if he had accompanied the Queen to the opening ceremony in the midst of the media criticism, I am sure he would have made another comment to add to his list of gaffs.

Doing things on the 11th hour is the norm here....everyone here knew everything would be finished right before the games started. As for the "collapsing roof" it was not a roof in the first place...it was something put to reinforce the drying cement and one tile fell because a press photographer had gone on the newly built part of the roof which was cordoned off. Secondly the bridge that "collapsed" was built back before the games started.

All the athletes have praised the accomodation and so have the cwg officials including the president. Like all games there are minor flaws with the key word being minor. The press aren't reporting the news but creating it. A new zealand press crew was caught throwing dirt on the walls inside the games village so they could later report that the village is in a mess. Then an australian cnut of a person made a nonsense story about how he went inside the main stadium with a suitcase full of bombs. Now the media are reporting that the stadiums are empty....but ive been going to many events for the past 4 days and ive got pics to prove that the stadiums were full. Certain small sections are reserved for players and vip's and are mostly empty.

I know about Prince Phillip and his quotes....he's quite a character :)

Incredible closing ceremony, a fitting end to an awesome tournament.

Cricket loss makes Oz athletes take it out on washing machine - The Times of India
NEW DELHI: At the top of the medal tally and the undisputed champions of the Commonwealth Games, the Australian team, sadly didn't show any sporting spirit when their cricket team lost the Test series to India on Wednesday.

Enraged by the humiliating loss, some athletes, according to highly-placed sources in Delhi Police, went berserk, destroying electrical fittings and furniture in their tower in the Games Village on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Not just that, policemen posted there say they also shouted slogans against batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who played a pivotal role in ensuring India's victory in the Bangalore match, and flung a washing machine down from the eighth floor of their tower.
Is this true?

So after the Australian team failed to win and therefore lost the series, they returned to their rooms and went on a rampage, destroying electrical fittings and furniture, while cursing Sachin Tendulker. The only named spokesperson in the article says "No complaint has been received. We have found a broken washing machine from the block where the athletes were staying. We are trying to establish as to how the machine reached there.", in an attempt to play down events because they don't want problems.

My arse.

Makes no sense. For a start, this Aussie team has lost to half the world recently (without tantrums). Secondly, the only damning quotes in there are by unnamed sources. And lastly, if they were so aware of the Aussie team going nuts the only credible spokesperson in that article wouldn't have said "We are trying to establish as to how the machine reached there."

An australian athlete was sent home early due to "bad behaviour". The australians have comfirmed it themselves.

AN AUSTRALIAN athlete was sent home from the Commonwealth Games for bad behaviour this week and a washing machine was dropped from a balcony in Australia's section of the athlete's village after the closing celebrations.
No one was injured by the washing machine but Perry Crosswhite, Australia Commonwealth Games Association Chief Executive, said he was was disappointed by the incident on Thursday night.
"We don't know who did that," Mr Crosswhite told journalists today.
"Delhi police came around and they've done a report and an investigation and we'll hear about that."
Mr Crosswhite was not sure from which level of the 10-storey building the machine was dropped.
He also revealed that one athlete was sent home a few days ago for bad behaviour but would not reveal the person's identity.
"At the end of the Games these things happen," Crosswhite said.
"When everybody is finished, they are letting their hair down, they do all sorts of things.
"We just sort of manage it and get on with it."

Around 300 athletes will depart Delhi on a chartered Qantas flight later today.

so throwing washing machines out of the building is normal behaviour after the games have finished ? :wenger:
