England and Scotland raise doubts over Commonwealths

Scotland and England's Commonwealth Games teams are concerned the poor quality of the athletes village in Delhi may put the whole event in doubt.

Scottish officials found their original accommodation to be "unsafe and unfit for human habitation".

England are "optimistic" they will compete, but have said the village requires urgent work before the Games begin on 3 October.

Games chief Michael Fennell admits the village is "seriously compromised".

The English team claim that India's monsoon weather has revealed new plumbing and electrical problems ahead of the arrival of their first athletes on Thursday.

"Commonwealth Games England remains optimistic that England participation at the Games can go ahead," read a statement.

"However there is a lot still to be done in the Village and this needs to be done with some urgency."

New Zealand, along with Canada and Northern Ireland, have described the conditions in the Village as "unlivable" and found alternative rooms for their 300-strong contingent of athletes and officials.

Team manager David Currie believes the whole event may be put in danger.

"If the village is not ready and athletes can't come, obviously the implications of that are that it's not going to happen," he told radio network newstalk ZB.

"Unless there is tremendous effort and energy and problem-solving ability to get it done, it's going to be extremely hard to get across the line."

The village officially opens to 7000 athletes and officials on Thursday and Fennell has warned that the high security around the site has made improving the infrastructure difficult.

Not that anyone really cares...But these are some damning assessments.

Well, being an Indian I care.
I am absolutely ashamed of the whole situation. Its really sad that people are more concerned about making crores of rupees at the cost of the reputation of the country.

Please don't come to India for the commonwealth games. It's fecking ruined.

The SCOTTISH declared it unfit for habitation?? You're proper fecked then.

WTF is happening? I am going for the games, and my accommodation is fixed. But the monsoon and the security measures have dampened my spirit.

I wrote an article around 3 years back for the Times here, when Delhi got itself into this pickle, that we'd never be ready in time. Hate being right now. I'm going for a few days of events though. We're not prepared for it by a long stretch...but it's silly to boycott it as some are planning to do.

I hope everything turns out to be well, but it's not going to be. cnuts like Kalmandi and MS Gill deserve to be sacked and thrown into jail due to the level of corruption that has been in this organisation committee. I'm still hopeful but I do think we're gonna be ashamed at the world stage.

Pretty bloody ignorant claiming the athletes village is 'unfit for humans' given some of the slums in India.

People lose perspective.

a foot bridge has collapsed there now

Delhi in doubt over safety fears
Matt Wade IN DELHI, Daniel Lane and Tom Reilly
September 22, 2010

THE viability of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi has again been thrown into question after a footbridge near the main stadium collapsed, injuring more than 20 people, and Australia's world champion discus thrower, Dani Samuels, withdrew over security and health concerns.

And in another blow to the credibility of the event, a senior Games official made a withering attack on standards in the athletes' village.

In unprecedented criticism of Delhi's facilities, the president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Mike Fennell, said the newly built village had been seriously compromised and conditions in the residences had "shocked the majority" of overseas officials.

His concerns were echoed by New Zealand's chef de mission, who raised the possibility that the event would have to be cancelled.

"The reality is that if the village is not ready and athletes can't come, the implications are that it's not going to happen," Dave Currie said. ''I think they are in severe difficulties … it's going to be extremely hard to get across the line.''

While Australian officials have described the conditions for athletes as "very dirty" and raised concerns about poor communications within the village, the Herald understands these will not stop the planned arrival of athletes in Delhi from next Monday.

But other athletes may decide to follow Samuels's lead and turn their back on the Games.

Looks like the good news continues....

So a 2nd athlete has withdrawn from the games...British Triple jumper Phillips Idowu saying he isn't going to India citing his safety as a major concern.

I thought it was insensitive to say the least that one of the England management people said on News tonight that "people should not be asked to live in conditions like this".Well of course hes right.
the great majority of people living in the Third World are living in conditions below this standard....and it includes people from many of the 71 nations competing.
Just for the record every six seconds.....another child dies from starvation.
I suppose its all relative.
But the quote above remains tacky.

Frankly a lot of athletes are not that interested in the Commonwealth Games. It looks like some have just discovered a great reason not to go.

Don't be so sensitive. The athletes need top class conditions to prepare and their managemement has every right to complain when those conditions aren't there. And it must be obvious that he wasn't belittling those living in poverty around the world.

The whole event may be in danger apparently. That would be a major disaster for India.

It looks like the Indian businessmen and politicians do not care about their own country. What a sham this whole thing has become.

No it doesn't look like it!!! because its a fecking fact. $$$>all in the subcontinent

These feckers need to be shot in the head on live tv

The ex-Sports Minister(Mani Shankar Aiyar) is openly praying for the games to fail.

This is a piece he wrote a while back, stating why he was against the Games, and of course was fired for his opposition to it.

It's a bit of a read, but has some real useful information

A little taste

And why, in the name of that same God and Mammon, the Commonwealth Games for the most prosperous part of the most prosperous city in India â.? the posh heart of New Delhi? The Commonwealth Games in Manchester were leveraged to rejuvenate the utterly rundown eastern section of the city where every family had undergone unemployment for at least a generation and some for two or three. Now, Walmart has its largest global store, employing 18,000 boys and girls, and Microsoft its European headquarters, in East Manchester thanks to the fillip given by the Games. Consequently, the 2012 Olympic Games are designed for the â.˛spectacular development of the 10 most underdeveloped counties of the Lea Valley on the far fringes of London.

<snip>

China not only hosted the Olympics, it also picked up the highest number of medals because their sports authorities first ensured that every Chinese child plays sports and games and thus widens to the full the net which catches the top-rung talent. We do next to nothing about bringing our children in the sporting net and, therefore, show up our comic side when medals are announced.

The only good that will come out of the Commonwealth Games would be a decision to never again bid for such games until every Indian child gets a minimum to eat, an assured basic education and a playground with trained coaches to discover the sportsperson in himself or herself. That, alas, is no part of our self-satisfied middle class dream for India which is why the Maoist is knocking at our gates.

Hearing reports that the games has essentially two days to get its act in order or thy will me moved/called off. Is this a real possibility or just tabloid talk?

the papers will talk it up, but no way in hell will the Games me called off. Sure certain individuals might not show up, and just now, they are reporting that the Scottish team have delayed their flight out to India, but I can't imagine the whole thing being called off..

Billions of dollars were spent(ok so a lot of it went into the pockets of individuals) but still the money was spent.

Cheers.

This interests me particularly as South Africa were subjected to a lot of bad press, and terrible reporting (majority of it coming out of the UK) over the readiness of our country to stage the World Cup and, lo and behold, we pulled it off altogether very successfully.

Just hope India can do the same for the sake of the country and its people.

Me too Joe, me too. T'will be really sad if they don't pull it off but I must say their ex-sports minister has some really burning points.

Doesn't look like it to be honest. SA had a fewmonths to prepare in the run-up to the games. Seems like India only has 2.

I hope the same too mate.

But the corruption here is almost sickening, most of the top athletes have already pulled out, the work is not so great. I don't think it's gonna be cancelled but it's not gonna be a great success. What a big shame as this was the event which could have ultimately been used to file a bid for the Olympics and not too mention the improvement in infrastructure for Sportsmen.

Apparently the UK forward team has to put gloves on and clean up their housing facilities incl toilets themselves. Now the bastards know what it feels like when the shoe's on the other foot. Cheap menial labour.

Have we all seen the reports of a false ceiling at the wrestling venue collapsing. Excess weight was to blame.

The litany of woes threatening the Delhi Commonwealth Games continued as part of the ceiling of the weightlifting venue collapsed on Wednesday.

The problems at the newly-built Jawaharwal Nehru Stadium come a day after a pedestrian over-bridge collapsed outside, injuring 23 people.

However, Indian Cabinet Secretary KM Chandreshekhar said the collapse of the false ceiling was not a big issue.

"The cables which were to be set up for the data network were placed on the false ceiling and due to the weight of the cables the ceiling fell off," Chandreshekhar told website IBNLive.com.

"It’s a minor thing and it will be corrected. It’s not a matter to be worried about."

New Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010

I realize they are probably talking about a lot of cables here...but a part of the ceiling fell...this really is a disaster waiting to happen.

It won't get canceled, let's hope they can complete the games without any loss of life, and we haven't even looked at the terrorist angle(I'm sure the security forces have...)

I apologise for stereotyping, but look how glib Indians are at sweeping such things under the carpet and making everything sound like it's nothing, that it's alright.

Mind you, if there it were a Japanese-in-charge he would probably commit suicide by now.

It hasn't collapsed, they just have different standards of rigidity.

that happened in Oz a number of years back, when the athletes were on it, and iirc a few got killed. ok it was some mickey mouse athletics tournament but the point still stands. it can happen anywhere where there's shoddy design or shoddy workmanship.

nah...you are thinking of the Zionist games in Israel, this was in 1997, crappy construction caused a temp bridge to collapse and athletes fell into a river, the Australian connection is that, 4-5 aussie athletes died and dozens more were injured.

yeah that might be it, knew it had something to do with the Aussies.

the false ceiling collapsing is no biggie I'd say, take a few days to fix depending on how large the area is.
and the next time the data cable guy will hang his cables from the structure, not lay them on the ceiling, the lazy fcuk.

What a thing to hope for ? , but I can see where your coming from.
India have had 7 years to get ready for these games , WTF went wrong?
What is going to happen if the likes of Australia , New Zealand and England decide that risk is too great and pull out some of ther best athletes have already pulled out.
I can't see the games being canx , but If something does happen and athletes or fans are killed , there will be an uproar and question asked.
this is a classic case of dammed if you do and dammed if you dont.
