Music Commercial Hip Hop Thread

Future/Young Thug tape out
That beautiful girls tape is a great listen if you like thug. The man is a bit of a freak but I find it hard to dislike all his music. I'm such a hypocrite because I totally ripped my boys apart who listened to him back in 2k15 .

Bit late with catching up on releases, but the Tyler album Flower Boy is great. Probably the hip hop album I've enjoyed most this year front to back after Kendrick's.

Anyone feeling Big K.R.I.T's new release? Really enjoying it right now.

Listened to the first few songs and couldn't really get into it. I've tried to get into Krit, because I like him and his message, but maybe his music just isn't for me.

I went to a Dilla tribute show the other week, featuring T3, Illa J and Frank n Dank. Was a great show. During the Q&A afterwards the host used soundbites from an interview Dilla did for Swedish radio back in 2003 and thus was present as a sort of ghostly figure in the room, was a nice idea and the guys got really emotional hearing his voice again.

I'm sure none of you will believe me, but...

Jaden Smith - SYRE, is fantastic.

It was just released today, and I'm actually speechless at just how good it is honestly.

Had to listen to a song or two after that and oh my days 'BATMAN' is the most shameless rip of Jumpman  dunno about the rest but that is hilarious.

Yeah Batman follows on from Lost Boy, where he's imitating/satirising Kanye from TLOP.

You kinda need to listen to the album in order or you'll probably get confused.

Fair. Bit weird to release it as a single then.

Is this the go to Hip-Hop/Rap thread on the Caf then? I'm pretty much on r/Hiphopheads every day on reddit and would be nice to discuss here frequently.

For some reason I never really got into Rodeo but I've recently discovered 90210 and it's amazing. Can't stop playing it.

For some reason I remember there to be another fairly large HipHop thread on the Caf with the word 'Hectic' in the title.

Cam & Mase going at it like it's 2004 again or something, I wasn't expecting the Ma$e diss to be so hard damn:

The tracklist for Eminem's new album is out and it's so disappointing. Was trying to be positive about it but it's just the same old pop features, I don't know what he's thinking.

Don't think he'll ever get back to where he was and it doesn't even seem like he's trying. He moans about feeling washed up in Walk On Water but still features people like Pink and Ed Sheeran on his albums ffs. His production choices are usually terrible as well.

Totally agree.
Interesting to see Twitter with some folks are all 'omgzzz wow' and others like us!

Aye. Shame really... I go back to his old stuff every now and then. Even Recovery was good.

It is a real shame. His lyrics have always been good too he just makes terrible choices with the rest of his music. Needs someone to help him with that side of things, I'm baffled he keeps taking the pop route and wondering why he can't get back to how he was.

Cus he gets called the greatest rapper alive when he releases pop. Dont think ive liked anything of his this decade.

It's not bad at all. The production is top-tier, and Jaden has an ear for a melody.

A few flaws that need to be wrinkled out - some of the tracks are just way too long, and in the same token the technical structuring of some tracks is off, and his shall we say, insipirations, are a little too obvious. Some songs sound like Kid Cudi or Kanye West cover songs.

A lot of potential for the first major release of a 19 year old kid who has basically been brandished a meme.

This is brilliant

Thought this was pretty disappointing to be honest, a great idea but the execution isn't as good as being made out.

Yeah I'd agree with this, the production and sound of the songs are what draws you in. His lyrics are right where i'd expect them to be especially in this era.
I personally liked most of his long songs, the part which goes from Hope to the end of Icon is my favourite part of the album - probably because it gave me a N*E*R*D*/alternative hip-hop vibe.

There's definitely improvement to be made, but it stands up to the other rappers in his age group.

I left Eminem back in 2004 where he belongs.

I know, I've barely listened to anything knew he's done since those days but would be nice if he managed to come back a bit.

Just listened to Untouchable. The chorus is awful but the rest of it when he switches up the flow especially second half is decent especially after the beat switch.

He's just doing him. Those artists may be mainstream but they are good song writers

Travis Scott is amazing. Love his music. Can't wait for Astroworld.

I don’t mind Travis at all all. Rodeo is a very solid, consistent album. Oh My / Dis Side is an excellent song on that. I think his mixtape - Days Before Rodeo - was excellent too — ‘Drugs You Should Try It’ is probably his best song ever in my opinion.

Think he’s declined a little as he has gotten bigger - the age old commercialism diluting song quality - but he’s still someone worth listening to.

No words.

That's fcuking ridiculous.

He's such a throwback;
- Punchlines that are both funny and lyrically on point.
- Genuine quotable lines that can stand alone.
- Genuine messages woven into pop culture and sprinkled with call-backs to other artists/tracks.

Thanks for posting. Love Black Thought. Probably wouldn't have seen this elsewhere.

Aye, spot on on all points. You can tell he's mastered his craft, which sadly can't be said for most artists.

Just checked out Statik's mixtape '8', I'd recommend it, plenty of good artists, plenty of good production, it's a nice listen.
