College Football 12/13

Living in SEC-land is not fun. Just saw this gem posted on FB... sigh...

"Every Year, the SEC Championship is really the "NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!" Every Year in recent history, that has been the case!"

Typical SEC homer. His school, Georgia, never wins squat so he like all others latches onto the neighbor.

Lost in that statement is that if he and other believers forget Alabama were not in the SEC title game in 2011, and thus LSU beat Georgia for the title. And in 2010 South Carolina were in the SEC title game - no way in any imagination were they the second-best school in the land that year. The list could go on.

If only Ohio State were eligible, we wouldn't have to watch Alabama or the SEC.

Marcelo who do you support?

I bleed burnt orange granted I'm by far a bigger NFL fan.

I only casually watch college games, even my school I didn't watch the first three quarters of their bowl game, but I will watch every Dallas game available and any other televised NFL game save the odd Thursday night game.

So his "girlfriend" was in a bad car wreck and he didn't go visit? She got leukemia and didn't go visit? Did they ever meet? If not, I wouldn't go around calling her my girlfriend.

Edit: ND is claiming he was duped. If that's the case, it makes it more confusing. Of course he could have made it all up, but if he did, he's got some serious issues.

No, she didn't even exist. There is no record of her. There is no record of her having a funeral. There is no news stories of a serious car accident. No record of her by her university. No record of her graduating. She didn't exist. He was in on the hoax, seemingly for publicity.

I realize that. I'm looking at Te'o's perspective as if she did exist. It doesn't add up that he wouldn't go visit or at least do more than call her...

How could he have been duped? Didn't the article say he claimed to talk to her on the phone?

To be fair, I have a friend who convinced hundreds of people he was a female medical student. He talked to them regularly on TeamSpeak/Ventrilo and the phone. He never met any of them online, but he used it when he was young to get customers to rent game servers from him. He was 14 or so and his voice wasn't deep, and he posed as this girl for years in playing the original Call of Duty before eventually killing her off. It's possible to deceive someone if you put enough effort into it.

Talking to her on the phone doesn't mean much. They'd only been "dating" since January, when she was in a car accident. That would limit the amount she could talk to him.

I'm not saying that he was, but it's not out of the question that he could have been fooled. It would take a lot of effort, but there are a lot of crazy people who'd do that to screw someone over.

I don't get why he'd need the publicity? From what I gather he was in the first NFL pick. What the hell does he need publicity for?

ND Athletic director just did a press conference completely backing Manti. As a Notre Dame fan I love Manti and really hope he was jut a victim in all of this, however it' hard to process all the info at the moment and I want to see what Manti has to say before I decide which side I believe. Whatever happens it's an absolutely crazy story.

Shit gets even weirder. Now the Arizona Cardinals fullback is insisting that she is a real person and he met her in American Samoa when on a charity trip there. Surely must be a case of mistaken identity but with this story who knows.

http://m.espn.go.com/ncf/story?storyId=8851033&wjb

Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011.

"This was before her and Manti," Mauia said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was -- I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa."

Mauia said Tuiasosopo -- whom Mauia believes is Kekua's cousin -- introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an "after-party" for all of the athletes involved in the camp.

"She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... "

He said it is his understanding that Kekua's mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he'd never met her mother.

When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said: "No, she is real."

Not sure if any of the Americans on here are familiar with the MTV show Catfish? There were plenty of references being made to it when the story broke so I had a look at an episode myself. Basically it's some guy who helps people who have an internet relationship meet and in the episode I saw at least it turns out that at least one of the parties has completely lied about who they are. Interesting idea for a series but like most MTV "reality" shows, some parts seem painfully staged.

Anyway, the creator is a guy called Nev Schulman and he had this to say on his official twitter:

Nev Schulman ‏@NevSchulman
I am working on finding out more about this @MTeo_5 #Catfish story. I have been in contact with the woman involved and will get the truth

Whether or not this is completely true is another thing but this story is pretty compelling so far.

It's all SEC fans from what I can tell, but UGA fans are the worst.

They are seemingly incapable of realizing they are irrelevant outside the state of Georgia. They seem to think they're on par with USC, Oregon, Texas, Ohio State and all the other college football big boys. And thus, when they inevitably choke at the biggest point in their season, they attach themselves securely to the coattails of whatever team beat them and by some ill-conceived logic, convince themselves that they're the next best team in the country.

I swear, I saw more boasting from UGA fans than Alabama fans after the national championship.

It's the equivalent to a United fan banging on about how great the city of Manchester is because City pipped United to the title last season.

From what others have said, he apparently implied that he met her in person before but now he is saying it was just an online relationship and he has been duped.

There is some confusion as to whether he actually ever said that or if it was just his father who said it before in an interview. In any case it seems that the defence they are using is that Manti was too embarrassed to say he met "Lennay" online and the he had never actually seen her in person before and falsified a meeting or two as a result. It certainly seems understandable if this were the case but how long this supposed relationship went on is another bone of contention. I think Te'o will need to explain everything in detail and have some evidence to prove he was the victim in this before people will believe him.

On one hand reading the Deadspin article makes it seems hard to believe Te'o had no knowledge this was a hoax. On the other hand the reasoning behind it doesn't make much sense, he voluntarily told Notre Dame he had been the victim of a Hoax back on the 26th of December and with 3 weeks to prepare for last nights news Notre Dame firmly planted themselves behind Te'o despite having an opportunity to distance themselves from him if they believed he was involved.
