Cole Palmer | Chelsea Player

Two months in, he's looked incredible. Much, much better than I expected. Superb talent.

He kinda looks like the player I thought Havertz could become.

Yeah, looks very good and surprised Pep didn't play him more and went to sign someone like Doku instead.

I think it’s because they don’t have a wide player with the raw attributes of Doku, while they have Foden Silva and Grealish who are somewhat similar to Palmer.

Saturdays game and Jackson's iffy recent form has me wondering if we should be playing him as false 9 for the foreseeable.

Firstly because of his own merits (I felt his performance against Arsenal was Firmino esque) but also based on performance Sterling and Mudryk also deserve to start.

I don't agree with that. I don't even think Jackson's form has been iffy. He's scored in his last two games before the Arsenal game, and he's generally very good with the pressing, hold up play, being part of the build, running channels etc so I wouldn't say his form has been bad.

Poch does have a tough choice to make though because Mudryk and Sterling both deserve to start based on their performances and Palmer is undroppable right now. So yeah, Jackson might be the guy that get sacrificed but I'd hate to see that.

What's his goal threat like? Seems like he has everything else.

So far in 4 starts (7 games over all) he has 2 goals and 2 assists, albeit both his goals have been pens.

City fans say it is Palmer who wanted to leave, presumably because they signed Doku to replace Mahrez, when he maybe he felt he could be the guy to step up.

Still not quite sure about his first name

Despite the goals of late I felt he was a lot better in August.

Tbh with how young the squad is my opinion will probably fluctuate a lot as there's likely to be a bit of flip flopping on who's on form and who's not, but at the moment I feel those three should be starting. If Jackson then uses that as motivation and comes on to win us the game and then produces a screamer performance against Blackburn then all the better.

Much much better than Havertz this season.

I'm a fan of Don Palmer. Guess Chelsea were due one successful transfer

Yeah, I hear you, and Jackson riding the bench for a while won't be the end of the world but I have my doubts that the approach that worked against Arsenal with Palmer and Gallagher as the the 10s will work against Brentford where we'll likely have most of the ball, so without a focal point like Jackson, it could be a bit of an odd way to set up when we have the ball. My gut feeling is Mudryk goes back to bench in the next game with Sterling, Jackson and Palmer starting.

You're right about this being a young team whose form will fluctuate though.

Dear @TheMagicFoolBus and @Amadaeus

How do you think Cole Palmer's skillset enhances Chelsea's project? Take into consideration how his qualities compliment/negates not only the players you've seen, but also the likes of Nkunku.

I think Palmers' problem at City was we have so many Palmers already whereas Doku brought something we didn't have since Sane with raw pace.
He was always super talented but offers nothing Foden doesn't and I mean that with no disrespect.

The posts about him being overpriced have fecked off very quickly though. I think he'll eventually make the England squad, but don't think he has the ceiling Doku has either.

Wonderful player and glad he's doing well.

Doku has a higher potential but he could also turn out to be City's version of our Pepe transfer. City does not get most transfers wrong lately though.

Palmer is a solid player. Does a lot of things right without excelling in my opinion. Did well against us. Think we also made his life easier that game as well.

I think that's fair. Sometimes you have to make these little sacrifices. Can go either way with Palmer and Doku, don't think there is much between them potential wise and it's down to preference.

Really rate Palmer and feel he’s right to be aggrieved at a lack of play time at City. From his cameos at the beginning of the season for City, he definitely looked like he could make the step up and fill Mahrez’s boots. Suppose like others have said, he’s too similar a profile to Foden and Grealish, hence Pep’s decision to go for Doku.

With their play style and Pep’s preference for inverted fullbacks, he likes his wingers to maintain width and Doku is much more suitable for that role than Palmer. Anyway, think Chelsea have made a good purchase.

I felt like £40m for a player, who is basically untapped potential and not done much at the top level, is an eye-watering fee but that’s the reality of transfer fees today - plus the British tax. Out of a considerable amount of duds Chelsea have signed since the start of last season, Palmer looks like he’ll be a hit.

Light years ahead of Antony, we really are suckers!
In fairness I think City would have drawn the line at selling him to United.

Only chance would have been if you colluded with a club abroad to get him and sell him to you guys after a season.

Not really many duds now? A few of the duds are starting to look really good, the start of the season looked awful but it's coming together now.. :0)

We sold quite a few of the initial Boehly duds.

I mean I wouldn’t take offence by my post. If you sign practically a whole new squad, I’d expect a fair few of them would be deemed, at the very least, disappointing signings let alone ‘duds’. It’s just simply maths. No team, regardless of the quality of their recruitment department, is going to have a 100% success rate. Then if you factor in Todd Boehly being the man behind many of your purchases, and that rate will likely decrease a considerable amount.

Out of the signings you’ve made since last season: Cucurella, Mudryk, Sterling, Fofana, Aubameyang and Koulibaly have all been disappointing given the outlay or expectation.

Mudryk and Sterling have seen an upturn in form but that’s an absolute minimum expectation. They’ve still got a long way to go to justify their fees. Fofana has admittedly been unlucky with injuries. Sanchez has made a poor start so far and the juries out on the other armada of new signings though I imagine you’ll have a higher success rate from this year’s transfers (Palmer included).

Like I said, I wouldn’t take it personally. We (United) have made far fewer signings since last season and I wouldn’t regard any as overwhelming successes (yet anyway). Anyway, don’t want to derail the thread any further.

He’s class this kid. Got everything to be a star

He’s class. He’s everything that Chelsea wanted from Havertz. And somehow Arsenal have havertz now and Chelsea got this kid for a deal

A few levels above bums like Sancho and Antony, imagine if we could just have one young signing work out like Palmer

If we got more penalties and gave them to Antony then we could have it maybe?

He has everything, if he had more pace he’d be competing for the Ballon d’or in a few years..

Hyperbole aside though he has a big future, very Mahrez esque, even though he doesn’t have frightening pace he still makes the wing forward position work.

He's a big upgrade on Mount and Havertz thats for sure.

Looks very good. Chelsea's midfield is set up nicely for the future.
