The equation for us as a team has not changed. Find a striker, find another central midfielder, find a right back.

In the long run, not too bothered. Interesting player for a decent fee but not the most obvious fit in terms of the profile of player we most need. And the question marks about what position will suit him best at the highest level apply for Liverpool too.

In the shorter term though, we do need a attacker of some sort. And if this was the one ETH wanted then missing out on him isn't a good thing in principle.

Liverpool are so much better in the market than we are.

From the little of Gakpo and Antony I have / had seen.....I'd say they have got the better player and we paid twice as much. Hahaha.

You have got to be joking? Antony was the better player in the summer and he's the better player now. We did overpay, but he is worth it. And I'm not a biased Ajax fan.

For the people saying we're not signing Gakpo because we're in the process of being sold... So are Liverpool...

I'm not bothered about Gakpo tbh, as long as we get in another attacker in Jan I don't mind, if the reason we didn't sign Gakpo is because of not wanting to spend money then that's a problem.

The most worrying thing about them signing gakpo is there adding more quality in depth. that could be crucial to beating us to top 4. A striker is a must for us in January or we may fall Behind.

It will be an absolute travesty if after all the fervour and intense speculation, we lose out on this and just to rub it in, he goes and signs for our biggest rival!

Surely being managed ETH will be one of the defining factors in his eventual decision ?

Well that’s on ETH isn’t it? Not that I agree - they’re totally different players.

From what I have seen so far on Antony I'm wondering where the valuation came from tbh. He doesn't look anything like an 84m player to me. He can obviously still get better as he gets more settled but not happy with that fee at all.

Makes you question the overglorification of Murtough on here yet again. Fair play to Liverpool.
It's quite clear the guys in charge of our transfers are still idiots. Nothing has changed in that regard. Signing Casemiro (for €70m) isn't rocket science. Spending €100m on Antony is bizarre, to say the least.

Having said that, losing out on Gakpo has barely moved me. He looks painfully average.

I don’t want to hear any more journos weeping the next time Klopp does his turning-out-his-pockets act.

This is why you don’t leak anything to the media. Makes you look like a cucked team when you don’t get the player, even if you decided against the move. Keep everything quiet and stop briefing.

Good, we need to aim for better players. Only problem is they are hard to come by in the winter window. Will have to accept potentially losing top 4 this season for a good summer window

The same day this gets reported

Granted i dont pay a lot of attention to Whitwell, but he does seem a bit of a transfer muppet. Always reporting on rumours. Like, most of his articles i see are about transfers...Or am i wrong

We have rashford and garnacho who are best at left wing which is where gakpo plays. Not arsed, would rather we strengthen in an area we need to.

I don't really care about the player but our supposed manager who we're supposed to 'back' wanted him as badly as Antony (or close enough) by all accounts.

If we end up with Felix, I won't think we've done badly out of this but if end up with that flop Memphis, we deserve to miss out on top 4.

I definitely think there's a few paid-up Murtough agents here at times  .

No because they are a serious club run by people who know what they’re doing. The speculation stuff the Glazers thrive off are for social media clicks and nothing more.
Giveover.

They've neglected their midfield and bought a dud for a huge fee. Haven't got depth at fullback either.

They need a midfielder and not a forward.

I can't imagine ten Hag wanted him, otherwise I think his preference would have been here. Could be wrong, though.

Be interesting to see how he gets on at Liverpool, though. Can imagine he'll play that left forward role, although not sure how they will look when Diaz and Jota are fit.

From ten Hag's point of view, I think he'll be targeting a striker, as we currently have quite a lot of wingers.

Think Depay as a stop gap would be a good option.
