Its deductive reasoning that it is given that Jassim has not proven he has earned the money in his relatively short career at an investment bank. Therefore the money would need to come from somewhere, and the odds that somewhere isn't the Qatari state or some entity it loosely controls or funds, are slim to none.

"In that context, Sheikh Hamad’s words are notable. It is Sheikh Jassim’s attempt to buy United, but his father is viewed as being the person wealthy enough to supply the funds." The Athletic.

''So you're telling me there's a chance?''

And that's all some will need to stick their heads in the sand and pretend this isn't a state backed bid.

Doesn't say anything we don't already know. Western sources like Bloomberg estimate his wealth at 1-2b. Even if they are off by 10x, are we really expecting him to hand over half of his money to his son? For an investment he disagrees with?

HBJ is Jassims dad.

Seems like a great guy.

Whitwell from The Athletic said, today, that HBJ has a lot of money. One of the wealthiest men in the world.

Jim Ratcliffe is easily among the 100 wealthiest individuals in the world (as per published lists and whatnot).

Do you think HBJ is somewhere in that ballpark? He isn't on any of the lists, of course, but let's say that much of his actual wealth is unknown.

Anyway, let's say he's in the ballpark for the sake of argument.

Do you think that someone like - say - Jack Ma is likely to spend anywhere between one fourth and one third of his personal fortune on buying a football club? No financing, no deals, no loans - just buy it, with a third/fourth of his own money?

Because that's the sort of figures we're talking about (Jack Ma is among the 100 wealthiest individuals in the world, around the middle of the list, he's worth something like 25 billion dollars, much like ol' Jim).

Are we supposed to believe that HBJ (as an individual, a private party, spending his own money independently of anything to do with the Qatari ruling family) would spend a quarter to a third of his personal fortune to buy Manchester United?

Or are we supposed to believe that he's actually considerably/significantly richer than someone like Jack Ma?

How rich is he?

The only party I can think of that would be willing to slap six to seven billion on the table (no financing, no loans, no nothin')...would be someone extremely rich even in the context of the richest individuals on this planet. Someone whose wealth would positively dwarf that of, say, Jack Ma or Jim Ratcliffe. Or any individual, really.

I look forward for the middle Eastern Derby of Manchester

Same sort of vibe as when my 4 year old daughter insists she can beat me at football in the back garden and even when she’s 27-0 down she’s still chatting shit and throwing herself into tackles. She wants to me to let her score a goal, but I tell her every single time that she has to earn it. If you’re not earning, you’re not learning, I’ll shout to her as she runs into the house to cry to my wife.
Found Omni-Man's account

Correct. I meant to say that HBJ said he would be funding his sons* bid.
Even saying HBJ is independently wealthy I think misrepresents how things work in an absolute monarchy. Sure he doesn't hold any of the government offices he once did, and him and his kids aren't inline to have the crown, but they're just one branch removed. HBJ's influence inside and outside of the country is tied to the core branch and the Emir. He doesn't have several billion in assets outside of Qatar, or that would be more traceable and Forbes' estimate of his wealth would be higher than the $1.2B. If he were to have a total falling out with the Emir and had to live in exile (considering that he were to survive in the 1st place) he wouldn't have access to billions worth to make investments, be it football clubs or not. He'd live comfortably for sure, but not "I want to give my son $7B to buy a football club" comfortable.

Beyond Premier League lovin' Jassim, HBJ has 14 other kids to spoil, so its unlikley he would spunk most of his net worth on a shiny new toy for just one of his 15 offspring.

"Sheikh Hamad’s billionaire status ultimately comes from Qatar’s oil and gas resources, as well as successful investments over many years. He helped run the country with the former Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani between 1995 and 2013, the pair having a very close relationship." The Athletic.

Yeah, his wealth ultimately comes from state coffers. In other words, he's inextricably linked to the state.

Agreed. I'm sure his Dad is probably richer than his net worth on websites. Although it strains credulity to believe its enough to buy Untied and also invest in the needed infrastructure/development and transfer funds.

I reckon it's just about possible that his dad is rich enough to do that, it's probably not possible that he's rich enough to do that for one of his children and still maintain his own wealth. I reckon his dad would need to be worth 40bn plus to be doing that, and that would mean estimates being off by a factor of 40.

Not to mention you look at other clubs where clearly there's an effort to hide that it's a state owned club, and it's the far more likely idea that jassim is purchasing us on behalf of the state

Well, Forbes/FT estimate his wealth at $1.2b USB. That's a lot of money, just not enough to buy United.

The problem with those reports is that there's hardly any data available on ME royals, so those estimates are most likely way off the mark. Most of his assets are probably domestically tied where financial transparency is not very common.

Forbes, pah, what do they know? This is Laurie Whitwell we’re talking about here.

Probably as much as Whitwell even if they are way more serious. Forbes operates with a set of criterias to judge net worth, the most important being stakes in private and public companies plus real estate and other smaller assets. Considering his assets are most likely tied to domestic investments where there's not much financial transparency, then Forbes would struggle to estimate a probable net worth.

Tbf, Forbes estimates for most billionaires come from their shares that they hold which is publicly available knowledge. For someone whos been paid by a secretive state and taken a cut from some of their deals or whatever, it's going to be harder to get an accurate accounting. Thst said I would seriously doubt he's rich enough to give one of his children enough to buy United but I also wouldn't imagine Forbes to be terribly accurate when accounting the wealth of someone when it isn't held in shares

They also obtained a lot of secret information from the Panama Papers leak.

The Forbes estimate is nonsense

The Sunday Times have him at £2bn (already double of Forbes) and even that is going to be a massive underestimate as based only on publicly available info

You only have to read the history of the deals he's been involved in (the Shard, Harrods, Barclays Bank, Sainsbury's etc) and the things he owns (£300m yacht, £200m Picasso etc) to know he's clearly worth many multiples more than what public info might show

I have no doubt he can afford to buy the club, and anyway there are going to be financial institutions involved and maybe even consortium of other investors

Guy is clearly clueless. Who spends £200m on a Citroen? My old Picasso only cost me £200 quid. :D

I think Sportico seem to be good with sports business based news and look to have some good journalists who would know what they are talking about as opposed to tabloid based sports jornos.
The journo in question who goes by the name Asli Pelit, is the outlet's sports reporter when it concerns sales/finances. Her title at the outlet is 'sports deals reporter'

Sounds legit, sounds Asli to me.

Sportico reported that bid hours ago and nobody else has even mentioned it. If they broke earth shattering news you can bet Kaveh would have tweeted four different views on it by now
