So they are going to get Ashworth and Mitchell and put 250 million into infrastructure with a view to expanding the stadium to 90,000? The main fact is that Jim is very wealthy and will be able to pump money into it to restart us after the glazers ran us into the ground.

That’s the dream scenario right? Clear the debt and invest in the locality next.

Hopefully not just muppet PR and it’s not just more of the same as under the glazers. New deals for everyone!

Still feels like it's Ashworth/Mitchell rather than both, would feel different if I see tier 1's saying it but will remain skeptical until then

Fully agreed. I always say we are one great manager away from the whole narrative changing. Most teams are.
For any manager to be successful at United, they have to understand how to develop the team where we we can play a more dominant brand of football in the opponent's half and then whilst being high up the pitch, control the defensive transition in large spaces. The concept of controlling the game in a high defensive line doesn't seem to register with certain managers and even a lot of fans don't seem to understand how crucial it is to have a strong rest defense if the aim is to implement a more dominant brand of football in the current EPL. The EPL imo is the most brutal league when it comes to defending transitions in a high defensive line, and the teams who have strong players in midfield and at CB with attributes to control or contain transitions, are near the top of the league. There's a lot of good managers, but their tactics are only as good as the players they have their disposal.

Take the game against Bayern as a example, their rest defense was considerably stronger than ours. Players like Upamecano and Kim Min Jae at CB, with Goretzka in CM and Mazraoui and Davis at fullback were too quick, too powerful and also very capable on the ball to provide a threat going forward as well as a platform for the rest of the team to function at a good level.

For Man Utd the answer was never Harry Kane and the 120m on him would've been a bad move imo. And I say that because Harry Kane wouldn't have solved United's biggest problem going into this season, and that being how weak we're in comparison to our rivals when it comes to defending transitions in a higher defensive line. And the way things are shaping up, it does look like improving the rest defense is in the cross hairs going into the January and summer windows.

And if we sign 4 players to come into the team with a view to improving our rest defense by next summer, then I believe ten Hag will have a complete team to implement his strategy. Players like Ousmane Diomande at RCB, Castello Lukeba or Jarrad Branthwaite at LCB, and midfielders like Amadou Onana and Lucas Gourna-Douath to just to name some examples to improve our rest defense structure and bring us closer to the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City in that regard.

My personal feeling is that it won’t get signed off today, meaning they’ll reconvene in the new year

By that point, Joel and Avram will realise the new tax year is only 4 months away and they’ll wait to sign it off then so that they have a big cash influx at the start of the tax year

A good Rest defense requires a good solid midfield base, but realistically it's just a buzz word to say we need to be more solid at defending when attacking, which let's face it is obvious to anyone.

We won't be looking to strengthen our 'rest defense', just looking to upgrade some of our players!!

Or before it opens

It can be done at any time, they just have to inform the NYSE 10 minutes before making anything public. If the stocks are halted during the day whilst the market is open, we know why. Before opening or after closing will make it easier though in fairness!

He’s eager but the Glazer’s meandering knows no bounds.

I think last night with The Times, BBC and others reporting it, news must have come from INEOS' side with their confidence for them to run it. You'd imagine it will be today if it's going to happen, rather than over the weekend.

Don’t forget ‘join the ESL’ as part of those plans also.

Wrong.

A good rest defense includes a solid midfield base.

And no, it doesn't mean we need to be more solid defensively when attacking, but rather be more solid at defending when defending 40 yards higher up the pitch.

Completely agree mate.

The clip below which features Lee Dykes (Brentford recruitment head) is a segment about money ball and how it's made a difference to clubs like Brentford and Brighton. And CNN is the outlet that sends their correspondent (Darren Lewis) to interview Lee Dykes about how money ball has made a difference to their (Brentford) recruitment. But Dykes responds by saying (not verbatim) that one of the reasons they use data is because they have a team of 15 scouts and data helps them to filter out zones/regions, so they can then focus their eyes on the players that are of interest to them. Which inturn saves them time and makes them more efficient in the market. But the journalist seems to be reading from a script and keeps on pushing the money ball concept, which the average fan will watch and be influenced by. Even Michael Edwards at Liverpool has gone on record and said that they used data but their recruitment wasn't led by data. Which is logical because their recruitment was led by a idea implemented by Jurgen Klopp, and before his arrival things were looking bad for Edwards.

If one doesn't have a clue on how he wants to play the game with and without the ball, then data isn't going to be very helpful against the current competition in the league. The key imo is to apply data to a method/blueprint for every position on the pitch, with and without the ball. So the idea has to be set before the data comes into it imo.

Same with everything, you have to have a fair idea of what you want before you go looking. Otherwise you end up with Wan Bissaka.

Pretty infuriating read. Hopefully a big change is coming, because it's needed. Arnold and Murtough were acting like headless chickens, to no one's surprise. The worst part of the article for me is that we ditched the plans for both Kane and Rice because of Casemiro.
Its utterly damning of the complete lack of a competent football structure, the lack of a plan, and over promotion of the likes of Murtough and Fletcher above people with strong track records. I hope Jim sacks the lot of them. The Casimero signing is a joke.

It isn’t damning of Fletcher in any way at all. It specifically says Fletcher doesn’t even get involved with selling the club to players with his role being heavily involved with transitioning youth players to senior level. He has feck all to do with recruitment.

This is exacting why “ETH spent 400 million” is such an innacurate and misguided statement.

I think we can be confident that this sort of transfer policy has been going on since the fellaini signing. Which once again confirms that every United manager has been undermined by the incompetent systems at United that help other managers thrive at other clubs.

Finally. Can't wait for Ineos to get started.

Let's see what they can do, but am not particularly excited. Too many false dawns. Beats the current administration.

Anyway, we all know this is a ploy to get Qatar to up their state bid. David Beckham seen in Miami where the boy Jassim's dad's aeroplane is en route! It's happening!

Week big next day

Alas we did not in fact get any news on Friday 22nd of January and instead on Saturday 23rd of January, definitely well connected journalists with direct links to the Glazers and Ratcliffe camp managed to cleverly infer that it would in fact not be happening until January at the very earliest. They would mention that “complexities of the deal structure” were to blame along with “Premier League requirements around fit and proper tests for new owners”.

Good article. Interesting to read about the feud between Murtough and SAF. Fergie recommended to Arnold when he took over as chief executive that he should replace Murtough with Dan Ashworth.

Infuriating doesn't quite cover it. Murtough sounds like a fecking cancer.

When Arnold took charge as chief executive in February 2022 he conducted a root-and-branch review of club protocols. Internally, he asked hard questions of recruitment, wanting to know how United had got so little to show for a £1billion spend on new players. The result was Jim Lawlor and Marcel Bout, two long-standing chief scouts, being ushered out. Lawlor, a Ferguson ally, was judged to be dismissing too many targets as not good enough. Murtough and Brown, the main architects of the system, stayed on.

People actively driving down standards at the club. Christ.

It really is a clown-show behind the scenes at United, as we all suspected.

@Adnan Thoughts on the article? Murtough did not come across very well here.

January aye?

We value Antony at 25m.

We will not pay more than 60m.

Here is 90m.

What a club.

It all comes down to the most horrifying bit of the article for me - when ETH said he wanted a left footed CB, CM and established Striker (still waiting for one of them…) and gave the profiles despite having a huge database of players we didn’t have any targets to give him (the shadow list). We couldn’t move on from Antony because the club had no clue who to move on to. Just absolutely fecking baffling. And the fact for the second summer in a row our budget has not been established at the start of the window. If we’d known we had 200m to spend at the start of both summers they would have ended very differently. That comes from the top though.

And some people want Murtough to stay on in some capacity, basically rewarding failure.

Did it ever get established who was behind that banner? It’s dreadful.

Beyond simply looking crap and being a bit lame as an idea, the shrug pose makes it certain meme fodder for the future
It says in the bottom right corner who’s behind it. casualfootballshirts.co.uk apparently.
Fans against Qatar I think, whoever the feck they are.
Did anyone else notice it appears to have been altered as of this picture? I see "full sale only" written in the S, what looks like "Glazer no 7" in the R, and something illegible done to the hashtag.

2018 and 2020 were two especially ridiculous windows in my view. Both José and Ole got massively fecked by Woodward and the club there.

José got Grant, Dalot and Fred in order to close the gap to City who finished 19 points ahead of us that season.

Ole got VDB, who he didn't want, two unready youngsters in Amad and Pellistri, a completely useless left back in Telles and a free transfer in Cavani. The latter proved to be the only signing who proved to be somewhat useful from the 2020 window.

Absolutely ridiculous.

To some of us it was obvious that Casemiro was the wrong signing. Infuriating that people who get paid millions at the club are so bad at their job.

Someone has done a very good job with the academy. I don’t know if that’s him but if it is then I have no issue with him sticking around focusing on that. What is clear is that he shouldn’t have the job he currently does - and the fact he’s willing to be demoted and stick around tells me he seems to know it too.

The article sheds light on the internal politics at the club which begin at board room level and involve not only Joel Glazer but also Baty and Stewart. And the article quite clearly mentions the aforementioned getting involved when United lost the opening two games of the season and a deal for Antony was pushed through due to the pressure put on Joel Glazer. There's the problem that needs eradicating and this is the problem that won't allow the club to work towards a set strategy.

The below also mentions Murtough providing ten Hag with a list of names at CB that included Martinez. All the players on that list tick boxes for a team that wants to build up from the back. Martinez was a player put forward by the scouts.

Whitwell also mentions the below.

Like I've said previously, if someone is to be successful in the role then he will need backing from someone other than the Glazers and I'm not talking about monetary backing because it's quite obvious that the board room has been interfering with decisions that should be taken by the football personnel.
