Christian Pulisic | Chelsea player

Ill hold my hands up and say ive not watched him play this season. However in a market where Fred went for £52mil and Lukaku went for £75mil, his potential both on and off the field, to me makes it a good deal.

I don't think choosing two occasions where we clearly over paid is a good benchmark but if he lives up to the hype then £58m is a fair price. Martial apparently cost us that much (including add-ons) so it will be interesting to see how both players compare.

I’m not sure on him. He’s got some great technical abilities but poor decision making and hides in games too often. He tends to overplay too. I think he’s can overcome those deficiencies though so he could make it as a very good player.
Yeah, I just don’t think he has *it*. A very tidy player who will fit the managers blueprint, though.

Something like 15 goals in 115 appearances for Dortmund. Granted he is young, but that is not exactly set the world alight.

Never really seen him play so it will be interesting.

Don't necessarily agree with those saying he would struggle for games. Decent chance Willian, Pedro and Hazard leave this summer.

I don’t think choosing the price you paid for a player in 2015 as a comparison for someone purchased in 2019 works either. Look at the state of the market then compared to now.

This is pretty much as risk free of an investment at these kind of figures as you can get. US captain, young, technical with a high potential ceiling for a position (RW) where we are struggling. If he flops we can sell him for a decent fee and our exposure in America negates any loss.

Possibly a Hazard replacement?
Maybe but it's a step down if they plan on selling Hazard and replacing him with Pulisic, they'd need more quality to go with Pulisic if they plan on challenging next season. Probably more a Morata replacement and play Hazard in the Mertens role that Sarri set up with at Napoli with Pulisic playing the Insigne role.

Willian and Pedro really aren't that great.

Both were excellent players at one point in time but Chelsea need some freshness in attack.
I get that but people saying it's a huge fee, it really isn't for a young winger who has great potential on and off the pitch.

He has good potential and Chelsea obviously think he's worth it so let's see.
However, on paper, this is an excellent deal for Dortmund. Getting him back on loan basically means they're selling a player with one year left on the contract and who isn't even starting right now for 60m. Great value.

Even Chelsea are not that stupid to let these 3 go and Odoi on top of it.

He is more a Callejon in terms of style (not talent) than an Insigne IMO. I would be surprised if he played on the left, i see him on the right.

The fee can only be measured in hindsight, for BvB it is a great deal regardless, Chelsea we will have to see. Only sporting wise, i think they overpaid, but i guess they wanted to do the deal quickly before other clubs come in the summer and they may end up selling a player or two and then clubs will know they are even more desperate. And then he is American, so marketing wise it makes sense too.

End product is the big weakness with him so far! Doesn't make the right pass enough in the final third as of yet. Something that he will need to improve on.

That's true. It is indeed, I wonder if Chelsea have offered them Hudson-Odoi on loan for next season to compensate the loss of Pulisic, or do Dortmund have more talents coming through in that position?

He's much more of a supporting attacker than a direct threat. More Gotze than Reus, if we're sticking with the Dortmund wonderkids. But having seem him live this season I really don't get the hype. Certainly likes to play the kind of football Sarri likes but I haven't seen anything to suggest he's good enough to be a key attacker. Wouldn't have excited me at all to sign him. Maybe he'll become a very good player but I see nothing that marks him out as an elite player, and at this age there's still so much that can go wrong.

Fair enough, I didn't realise he was that young either.

If United bought him I wouldn't consider it risk free if he flops but you lot seem to have ability to sell players you don't want for a good price.

I think they want to sell Odoi, but i doubt Dortmund will buy him for the price Chelsea want.

Talent wise, they bought Wolf from Frankfurt last summer who can play on the right, who is 23, but hasnt really convinced in the few times he played and he was injured quite a bit. Other than Sancho and Larsen, who are considered top talents, they have Gomez, a former Barca youth product, who is quite good but still is in the youth team and is more offensive midfielder than winger.

I think they are quite happy with the fee and will buy someone talented for half the price or in the Bundesliga in the summer to take his position in the team.

Chelasea where the only team who made a concrete offer for him. Don't think Liverpool had any need or interest for him now. He'd have the exact same issues there as he has at Dortmund at the moment, with no clear path to the first 11. whereas at Chelsea, with Willian and Pedro both being 30/31, there is a more clear path to the first team there.
I didn't want him to go to Liverpool because, as an American, I want to root for him and hope he does well. If he went to Liverpool, I would want him to fail miserably.

He's been second choice to Sancho this season.

Moving to Chelsea may prove a mistake but it may be even bigger in retrospect if we pick an Ole or a Poch as our next manager where he could have made our RW his own. I hope he flops badly tbh because Chelsea are our rivals after all.

Feck, think we’ll end up regretting not being in for him. Figured he would have been perfect for us in so many ways.

Don't know why so many are saying "moving to Chelsea is a mistake because they cast him aside if he isn't world class." If anything we have been too patient with many of our underperforming players. We hung on to Torres for ages when it was clear he was busted. We're doing the same now with Morata. We've put up with average performances from Willian for years. Until recently we couldn't get Cahill out of our team despite him getting abused every week on the pitch.

Pulisic will be given every chance to develop and succeed. Appears he's been a long term target of the club and is now our most expensive ever outfield player. Won't be discarded for years even if he is a huge bust.

He'll be a marketing dream but he's not worth that for his footballing ability. I can't see him being more than a squad player.

58m seems awfully lot for a player whose contract with BVB expires in 2020. Having said that, he is a very good player. Let's see if he can take the step up. Sarri is the perfect manager for him.

Shame, I would have loved him here. I fear he will be great for Chelsea, while we still start with Lingard and Mata at RW.

He's been second choice to Sancho this season.

I honestly never got this reasoning. Both are capable of playing on both wings so they never really canceled each other out. With Reus playing exclusively in the middle under Favre there are always two spots left for grabs. Pulisic´ bigger problem is not Sancho, but that Favre values Larsen very highly and that Guerreiro put on impressive (better) better performances on the offensive wing so this is the competition Pulisic can´t get ahead right now.

Being reported that there were several other clubs that would've been in for him had we waited. The club clearly felt they couldn't afford to let that happen so paid over the odds now.

I would guess that all of the big clubs in the PL bar City would've been very interested this coming summer.

Pulisic is a key signing with Hazard's contract up in the air, but their last 2 of the 3 big signings have been a failure with Morata and Bakayoko so it'd be interesting to see how this pans out next season.

Pulisic wasn't a regular at Dortmund.

Basically, they have Paco Alcacer, Isak, Gotze, Reus, Sancho, Philipp, Wolf, Bruun Larsen, Kagawa, Guerreiro and Sergio Gomez = 11 attacking players for 4 positions ST, LW, 10, RW.

He hasn't done anything to suggest he's a 50M plus player, but he's a top young talent who'll be more scrutinized now than ever after this move. Don't expect him to walk into the team and make an immediate impact. This deal is a big risk for both player and club (I know all transfers are risks)

There's not a chance that tempts them.

I think it would. After all Dortmund are a selling club

I don't usually like United spending ridiculous amounts of money on 1 player. However we desperately right winger and an 18-19 English RWs whose able to score 7 goals and make 8 assists in 22 matches do not usually grow on trees.

Of course it’s a risk, but he’s a very talented player, with CL experience and only 20. We paid 50m for an ordinary midfielder that we didn’t even need for example, and who came from Ukraine, while Dortmund is a big club. I think Chelsea got a very good deal, and we’ll live to regret it, unless we buy Sancho, which I doubt we will.

Now that he's signed for Chelsea, I think Lingard is better anyway.

They sold Dembele for a deal totalling €150m. They just sold Pulisic for £60m, a player on the bench with a year left on his contract after refusing to negotiate in the summer.
Don't even think the player is willing to move.

What's the damage in trying?

The while buy to loan back is stupid for me
Likely because of the possible transfer ban for Chelsea in the summer. Dortmund didn't want to let him go mid-season, and this way he's already on Chelsea's books and they can register him for the 19/20 season if the ban happens.
