Christian Eriksen has left Old Trafford on crutches

It was obvious Carroll was throwing himself around with the intent of leaving his mark on someone. I'm not even being bitter here, he meant to leave one on both Eriksen and Casemiro.

Hopefully it's nothing more than a contact injury with swelling rather than a strain/ruptured ligament, but leaving on crutches is never a good thing and it looks like Fred will be stepping in for the foreseeable.

Claiming there is a risk in any game and then insinuating risk of injury is not lessened if you are rested in certain games is stupid.

It was a silly game to start him in because 1) it was a mid tier Championship team and 2) he was showing serious burnout (which was just another reason to rest him outside of the crunching tackle event).

We dominated the 45 mins with a fair few chances whilst they only had one touch in the box.
And not a single goal. Dominating the game means nothing if you don't score.

Using posts in the matchday thread as some sort of evidence of reasonable opinion will never help any argument.

We’ve a match next week where ETH could have probably gone with a weakened midfield. That was always the most sensible game to rest Eriksen. It won’t happen now. Oh well. Shit happens. Last night’s line up for a must win cup game against Championship opposition was just fine. It’s so crazy to me the way people have wiped from their memories how often a team without the likes of Eriksen, Casemiro, Martinez and Varane would lose or draw fixtures like last night. We’ve a great manager now but even he can’t take all our best/most important players out and still cruise to victory. As ETH said, he’s not fecking Harry Potter!
Pre-kick off the match day thread isn't riddled with ridiculous knee jerk opinions as much as it is in-game.

In my opinion Eriksen needed a long rest. He's been burnt out for a long time - and yes, Fred in his place may be a step down but its more than enough to put Reading to the sword. I didnt have an issue with the others, but Eriksen has long been burnt out in the middle of the park. Thats something that not just me have thought for a few weeks now. I made a thread on how hes not working well in a 2 a few weeks ago and a lot of posts pointed to burnout there too.

Sad thing is his replacement could be McTom who adds nothing offensively or defensively.

Eriksen wasn't the reason we scored our goal, if that's what you're suggesting.

Eriksen's minutes on the pitch are managed well. Since the WC break he played 77, 61, 68, 72, 83, 90 minutes in the league and 83, 57, 30, 71 in cups. People being surprised that someone plays should not matter at all. Injuries happen, we can't wrap everyone in bubble wrap.
He's playing every 3 days and looks visibly knackered. This is aside from the injury incident yesterday.

Absolutely gutting to see but this was the risk I suppose.

It’ll be good if we could sign a CM now in this window but chances of that happening are next to nothing.

His replacement will be Fred - the 50m regular starter for Brazil who started in our best performance of the season against Spurs. I have no idea how we’ll cope if Eriksen is indeed out for a few weeks. We’ve never beaten Leeds with Fred before.

No. Hint. We have a game in the middle of next week that is very close to being a dead rubber game.

I understand what a dead rubber game is, and why it doesn’t apply to last night.

And yet I am still perfectly able to understand what the poster is trying to say. I’d go so far as to suggest that the only way you could truly misunderstand that post is if you are deliberately doing so. Which begs the question, why?

Carroll went out there looking for rough challenges in the second half, you could see how he was lurking around the pitch like a linebacker, and the blame should be laid fully at his door for the outcome of Eriksen, he should be ashamed.

It would be totally unfair to blame ETH or anyone else for the action of an opposition player who cannot control himself.

Why do we need a 25 men squad? If we expect our best 11 to play 50 games a season, then we only need around 15 players.

First of all, there are some players need to be protected by the manager, whether due to age or injury prone. Such as Varane, Shaw, Eriksen and Casemiro

Then there are players need to avoid burnout, eventhough they appear to be capable of playing 50 games a season, such as Rashford, Bruno, DDG.

While I expect Maguire to start, I also expect McFred to start as well. What is wrong with letting some fringe players getting some valuable game time, against a Championship team? In fact, with 5 sub, Eriksen and Casemiro can come in 2nd half.

If a manager failed to capitalise on some gifted advantage in "easy" cup opponents, do you expect him to be wiser in European cup games, hence carry us into double or treble finals? IMO ETH is managing MU like Ajax or Brighton, not an EPL major Club that is expected to be involved in multiple competition.

Sign of the times that I’m sure EtH will have a plan. In the past when we lost a first teamed the drop in quality and our build up was noticeable but now we have a system which I have confidence in.

It seems a lot of people didn’t think he should have started but I like how EtH is keeping a settled team. Helps deepen the understanding amongst players and keep them sharp.

That's just how he looks. Even after a 2 month break he'd still look flushed and winded after 60 minutes.

I see the hindsight brigade are in full force. No doubt some of those posters would have criticised EtH had he played a young team and lost.

It's not hindsight - many were saying it before the game. Perhaps rename them as the foresight brigade.

Well, take Eriksen out and you don't know how we play. My point being, the fact we struggled to score for 55mins justified the need for a strong lineup.

If the club does not bust a gut to get a player in on loan it’s a disgrace, regardless of sale.

We have lost Ronaldo, Donny, Martial as always and now Eriksen and all we have done is bring in Weghorst. Our season, as good as it has been can fall apart just as quickly. Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Newcastle have all strengthened whilst we are weaker.

Don’t s*it yourselves, that is just precautionary. Leave him out vs Forrest and maybe Palace and he‘ll be fine.

Most people would find something to complain about. Had he rested some players, complaints would be about how we rested so many first teamers in an important game.

Thats not because we didn't create chances though. You're acting like Eriksen is the ruthless finisher that we depend on.

We created multiple good opportunities in their box. This debate has just spun off into another topic, but its far fetched to suggest we'd struggle to put away reading without Eriksen. They were penned in and it was a matter of time.

Good. Then you probably also understand why I felt the need to point this out. Because if “many people” think last night was a dead rubber then many people are idiots. And this all matters because it also explains why ETH could only make so many unenforced changes.

You can’t legislate for officials not doing their job & ensuring the safety of players from others. That wasn’t Carroll’s first overzealous tackle.

The better side shouldn’t have to rest their players to protect them from thuggery.

I thought the tackle in Erikson was a bloody red, Carrol was out of control with feet off the ground. I
was amazed he didnt even get booked.
The boot and crutches are a precaution pre scan, lets hope its not too serious.

His brilliant cross field pass to Antony switched up play. Antony then assisted Cas, mctom or Fred wouldn’t of been able to play that pass

so you’re wrong

Would be a fecking bummer if he's seriously injured. He makes us tick in midfield alongside Casemiro.

We need to get a replacement in (at least on loan) if he's out for longer. Still enough time for a seriously run club

And you'd be the first to say SACK ETH when we get knocked out. It's pathetic.

Blame the referee, Andy Carroll and Paul Ince for allowing such ridiculous tackling.

This./

You shouldn’t have to rest players to protect them from what Carroll did, the press are more upset by a phantom offside call than a hatchet tackle.

Carroll’s a cnut. Eriksen has more ability in his weak foot than that donkey will ever have. That’s why he has to resort to hacking him down, the shithouse.

It's actually bonkers to me that you can wrap your legs around somebody from behind in the modern day and not even get a yellow.

Carroll could have been sent off 2x over. As it's us though, it's fair play right?

I think it looks precautionary. The fact he wasn’t stretchered off and seemed able to walk off normally seems positive.
