He seems to be physically labouring at the moment. I think Fred's energy to help combat City might make the difference. We're not getting much of the ball anyway.

He doesn't have the physicality or intensity to play in midfield for us. A complete ghost without the ball. We need an upgrade badly.

Good news he is back but i fear a few of you are doing the usual trick of building our players up whilst they are out injured. Eriksen is a great passer but he is lightweight and bypassed easily. We've got quite an easy run in with teams that should suit him but he would not have done us much good against Newcastle and i'd rather keep Casemiro and Fred against the better midfields in the league.

I got stick for this a couple of months ago. He's been horribly lightweight. He'll play a couple of great passes in a game but otherwise our midfield is worse with him in it. City will tear us apart with him in midfield.

dont know why you got stick for that. he cant start in the final. we will get tore apart if he does.

His first half of the season was so much better. He’s largely been poor after his injury. Good long break will do him good, but I don’t feel he should be first choice next to Casemiro after the transfer window is over.

It's been a long season for him. He'll be better off as a squad option and he'd probably be happy to be in that role too. Still plenty of games for him next season while at the same time managing his minutes carefully.

Gifted player but lacks the physical strength to play midfield for us I think.Maybe second choice against weaker opponents might be his best position next year.

I think he's been a bit subpar post-injury.

We need an upgrade on him though definitely. Still a good signing.

By the way, stamina isn't his main issue. It's lack of speed. He only has one gear.

Controversial opinion but it was blessing in disguise that he couldn't play against Barca. No way ETH would've started Fred ahead of him. I expect to see them both against city.

Got an assist for Casemiro's goal. Couldn't quite get enough on his effort from Malacia's deflected cross early in the 2nd half, allowing Kepa to make a save on the line. Other than that, looked lightweight and sluggish in midfield, so easy for Chelsea players to get past him.

He's gone off the boil a bit, has always struggled physically but isn't even really imposing himself on the ball at the minute either. Definitely a player more suited to some games than others.

He struggles to track back and a bit half-hearted when pressing. Brilliant player but age has caught up with him. We need him next season without doubt but needs to be used selectively

That first half experiment with him behind Martial and Bruno deep didn’t work. He was a ghost. I like him but we need better.

This guy hasn't been the same since his injury, but he is still one of the main reasons for our good season and even in his bad periods he gives us something (the assist yesterday and the pass that led to the goal against bournemouth). He should not be used against all teams and he shouldn't be a starter againts the top teams but he absolutly still has a role to play in our team. Give him some rest and use him wisely next season.

Watching him play recently, and buying a Casemiro partner must be one of the priorities this summer. Probably only a striker is more needed.

He still doesn't seem to be at100% since he returned from his lengthy injury. I don't think he was bad yesterday. He did OK in a game in which neither side looked particularly interested in defending. Oh, by the way, he's not responsible for what's going on behind his back. It's not his fault it took us about 35 minutes to instruct Lindelof to follow Havertz's movement and Chelsea had a spare man between the lines. It's not the midfield's fault either, when the opposition is driven to the wide areas, that our wingers where always two steps behind the players they were supposed to be marking. Anyway, i believe we looked open because we expected an easy game, given Chelsea's current form. It was the same with Inter in their Cup final against Fiorentina. I both expect and hope that the concentration levels will be much higher for both teams against City.

I can't watch him, it's like watching the match at .5x speed. He's too slow to play in any position for us, in my opinion.

I feel so too. Bring in a starting midfielder and Eriksen could be a fantastic squad option. Pick the right games for him, bring him on, when we need creativity from the bench and he should be absolutely fine.

Good player but it's clear he can't play 3 games a week anymore.

Still think he has a big role to play next season and he just needs to rest this summer. A lot of our lads are knackered.

Remember when he played up front against Brighton?

He doesn't offer much anymore apart from the occasional penetrating pass or the rare good set piece.

Against teams who like to have the ball, he offers almost nothing and gets on the ball less than Fred. Yesterday was pretty bad for a midfielder whose main qualities are supposedly on the ball.

Man Utd 2:1 Fulham
If we play him against City we are fecked. They will run over him

I wonder what is his role for next season. I think he will just play some very very easy home games, when we're not pressed and he can pass his way around.

I really don't think he is the guy you put for the last 20-30mins when you're struggling in midfield.

Too much of a luxury player in my opinion.
We need to get someone with more speed and energy

What are people attributing his limited gas tank to? Was he always this way (never noticed watched him at Spurs), is it down to the cardiac issue he had with Denmark, or is age just getting the better of him now?

As far as I can remember as far back at spurs he’s always had a limited gas tank and would tire at the end of games especially in games where the intensity was high and he was required to do more defensive running.

I think genuinely he is very important for us, he just adds a touch of class and control with his passing in midfield and since it’s highly unlikely we bin Bruno or drop Cas he’s the likely person to drop out. However getting someone with an engine and his control and passing ability is no easy task.

Feel like his issue is more that he and Bruno do’nt have the ability to cover each others weaknesses and as I said earlier we won’t get rid of Bruno so if we can get someone who offer a similar skill set to Eriksen but with more athleticism we’d be sorted.

I would argue the issue is he's slow rather than limited gas tank (might be a problem, but not THE problem). At some point in game as players get tired there's more space to cover and he fails miserably. He only has one speed, and the same applies to Casemiro so that is a really bad combo. This was the case even against Chelsea a few days ago.
He's good on the ball but it doesn't make up for the fact the opposition can run around him and our midfield easily.

He usually covers more km per match than most. But the awful tackle clearly had a big impact. Ideally he is our backup next season. As a squad option he is great.

He has most distance covered per match in the club and 4th in the PL.

bingo, spot on.

Age is catching up to Eriksen. No dishonor in that whatsoever. He can give us valuable minutes next season but it's as clear as clear can be that we need to manage his minutes next season.

He had a very good first half of the season, I had him down as 8/10 for performances (if we exclude that shaky start in August) until he got injured in January. But after the injury he’s come back half the player.

We shouldn’t be planning on relying as much on him next season.

I think he is a guy to bring on the last 20-30mins when we are in control of possesion and the game, not someone to chane the game, jsut continue controlling it. Personally though he is a very good player, i think he has also been over rated a lot at Spurs and very much so here this season too, especially by a fw pundits....but I still think he a role to play next seaon in the squad for sure.....if we progress and control more games in terms of the scoreline thatn we did this season

I fully agree. The problem is last 20-30' is when there's most ground to cover as players are getting tired. I don't particularly think Eriksen is the man to do that. When we're in control then it's fine, but we don't have a lot of those games so I expected his role to be drastically limited next season.

People always love players easy on the eye, Eriksen when not bothered by pressing looks efortless with his passing. He is also intelligent in his positioning but he's basically a ghost defensively:

I am really surprised this aspect of his game is ignored so easily as this is part of the reason we look so fragile away from home.
Also, I mentioned this many times but I truly think we peaked with Casemiro-Fred midfield. Not because Fred is the better player (mandatory comment), but because he brings more balance to midfield. He is however not easy on the eye.
What I like most about Fred is that Casemiro is more involved in the buildup as he doesn't need to be the last man in midfield always. This aspect is very overlooked. I am sure ETH also sees this what pursue of Mount would indicate.

Fred isnt easy on the eye because he is shite and opening up the game for Bruno to thrive. While his defensive game is much better than Eriksen his passing is much worse.
Fred is simply not a viable option due to his lack of progressive passes and how few passes he does per 90 in general, which fits the eye test of a player who runs around a lot and does alot of defensive work but not enough build up.

Eriksen will feature much less next season I am sure precisely because of the reasons you outlined.
Mount is like a happy medium between Eriksen and Fred. Not quite as prolific in his long passing as Eriksen, or quite as good defensively as Fred, but better than both at progressive runs. Fully expect Fred to be sold.

Build up is important but it's equally important to do the dirty work in midfield, otherwise you play tennis game. Which is what happens when Eriksen plays in midfield against any decent opposition and in most away games.
Anyway, I'm just arguing ignoring defensive actions and focusing only on passing (that is exactly Fred vs Eriksen discussion) is just wrong. We had good results with "shite" Fred in the team this season. They contributed equally to this season success IMO.

I said Fred was shite at progressive passes, not shite overall btw.

Either way I dont think we disagree in the overall point that we need a new partner for Casemiro next season.

I don't think he's shite at progressive, I think he's not very good at it- he just looks bad compared to Eriksen. Still I think he's been quite creative this season, he made those passess like assist to Bruno goal regularly (not often, but still this isn't something out of the blue). Out of curiosity, do you think Casemiro is better at this progressive passing?
