Chris Wood

Why did Newcastle sell him?

He was rubbish for them. Could have persevered although it would have been a bold decision to do so.

Brought him in during January because Wilson was injured and scored 2 in 17 starting every week. Wout Weghorst at United form. Wilson with 8 in 18 that season overall.

Signed Isak the following summer and with Wilson fit again there was no place for him, just bit part minutes until they loaned him out in January then eventually sold him.

That half season at Newcastle is the only time he's really failed when playing regularly. Wilson with 18 the following season, Isak with 10 while missing quite a few through injury while Wood's minutes were reduced greatly in the first of the season before they loaned him out. Was never going to get ahead of those two.

It's not like Wood lit it up at Forest at first either while on loan, deputising for Awoniyi he scored 1 goal in 7 appearances.

Weghorst was way worse. He scored 2 in 29. That’s less than a goal every ten games. An absolutely shocking return for a striker.

True in terms of overall appearances, and true overall to be honest. I was using Wood's league only stats there. Wout never even scored a league goal for us.

Still, minutes wise in the league:

Wood 21/22 for Newcastle = 2 in 1331
Weghorst for United = 0 in 798

Can't divide by zero so Weghorst was worse. Call it hyperbole! Not good enough for Wood though by a long way when Wilson was fit and doing well again plus Isak was their shiny new toy.

True. Both are absolutely honking.

dreams do come true
another late bloomer to add to our shopping list

They only signed him to send Burnley down, he was surplus as soon as Newcastle stayed up.

Could well be something in that. Never thought of that, not that he did them much good on a personal level and as above they needed another forward at the time due to Wilson's long term injury. Definitely a bonus to weaken a rival at the same time.

Anyway, the league table on the day they signed him:

I'm surprised by Wood's international record, really - given the (weak) calibre of teams New Zealand compete against in Oceania.

In the two matches of this international break, they / he's done what I'd expect to happen regularly - they've put 8 past both teams, and he's scored 5 in those two games.

Yet that's only pushed his international record to 41 in 80. A goal every other game is obviously a good record for a European or South American international. But I'd have expected a player of Wood's ability, regularly coming up against cannon fodder in the Oceania region, to have racked up plenty of those 2's and 3's like he's done this round and be averaging around a goal a game or even more. But he obviously hasn't.

Ronaldo's international record is a little better than 1 in 2 and he's only ever played against Luxembourg!

That record doesn't tell the entire story. They don't face those teams apart from in WC qualifiers. He has only played in WC 14', 18' and 22' qualifiers. The latter was also a shortened one because of covid. Now barely started the 26' qualifiers.

Their equivalent of the Euros (Oceanic Cup) is basically just a phase within their WC qualifiers. So in the 2nd phase the 8 remaining countries meet up, play the Oceanic Cup and also determine who advances to the final phase of qualifiers. Essentially they just kill two kiwis with one stone.

He was the top scorer in the 2016 OC. The OC was cancelled in 2020. In June 2024 it was actually held as a standalone tournament but Wood missed it because he had planned his wedding before the standalone tournament was announced. That probably says a lot about how disjointed things are over there.

He is better than a goal per game when facing cannon fodder. 26 goals in 23 games in the Oceanic WC qualifiers. 0 goals in 6 games in the inter-confederation WC play offs.

In 44 friendlies he only has 14 goals. Most of their friendlies are against teams from around the world who are better than them. So, basically most of the time they aren't facing those shite Oceanic teams.

You also need to factor in jet lag. He'll play 90 mins in the league at the weekend and then do a 24h travel. Everything is polar opposite (circadian rhythm, season etc.) when he lands and he probably even doesn't get a proper training session before their first game. The pitches are probably shite too, especially in the away games against countries no one has ever even heard of. Imagine the humidity on those Pacific islands.

Also, he's in the form of his life right now. He'll have confidence and drive he likely hasn't had before. Let's not pretend he has always been like this.

Good post.

Thanks for all of that. :+1:

I hadn't realised so few of his 80 games would be against teams from Oceania! I expected his ratio in those games to be around / better than a goal a game, so that's no surprise - but I expected him to have played more cannon fodder than he has. That explains it leveling out at a goal every other game then.
