Anybody going to be following this?

I'm hoping for one last hurrah for Anand, but common sense dictates that Carlsen will take the title.

I'll be following.. I miss chess. Haven't played or done anything related to chess in the last 5 months.

I'll be cheering for Anand, but won't complain if Carlsen wins it. After all, he should win it..

Come on Anand! 12 draws, then bore him with another 3 draws, make him angry, then make him crack in the fourth and take it 8.5-7.5!

(Carlsen will win it 7-5 - will have two more wins than Anand)

If Carlsen wins this, I can't see anybody knocking him off for a while.. Maybe Nakamura, but I doubt it.

Draw has been made. Carlsen will have white for the first game (will alternate afterwards).

All games will start at 9:30 AM UK time.

I've been looking forward to this for a while, I hope we get to see some memorable games.

There are tickets to watch this, that are as costly as 3.25 lakhs INR.

 What a game! So much for all the anticipation.....

Anand outplayed Carlsen in the opening, but only enough to force a draw.

I guess some angry fans will be asking for their money back...

16 moves?!! Shortest game ever in a world championship?

I understand the basics of chess, but professional chess is extremely complicated. Can someone point me in the direction of a move-by-move which will explain strategies and so on?

Just woke up and will look at it. Carlsen is often outplayed in openings/looks bad because he plays different opennings and avoids the main lines.. His middlegame makes up for it, and then he grinds opponents into submission. Very different style from a Kasparov or Anand.

People pay to watch chess?:nervous:

My thoughts entirely. Not exactly a fast-paced spectator sport.

In every world championship match, there will be new "home prep" openings and variations used by the players.. It is actually very fascinating to watch.. I would definitely be at the games if I was in India - no matter the price...

These are far more spectator friendly than the 80s. Just google the Kasparov-Karpov matches. Fascinating for me - as Kasparov slowly learned to play like Karpov and then beat him at his own game all over the course of a few months - but normal spectators would go mad.

I know, and I don't actually like Carlsen's style, but in this game he was more than just slightly outplayed.. He was actually a bit relieved and satisfied with the draw after the first 10 moves, and it was Anand who thought long before accepting it.

I hope it doesn't go down as a missed opportunity for Anand, but it looks like Anand is much better prepared than Carlsen.. Carlsen also doesn't seem to perform that well under pressure, he looked very nervous today..

Having said that, I still stand by my original prediction for now, for the reasons you mentioned.

What do you think of that game? I'm disappointed Anand took the draw. Carlsen did not look ready, and Anand had a chance IMO

Yeah totally agree. I think he should have played on.. But Anand is trying to save some energy probably.. If you look at it this way: Quick draw with black, leaving you with enough time to relax and prepare for tomorrow's game when you'll have white (and you're 43!), any player would take it..

However, imo it's just the psychological blow he dealt to Carlsen with his opening that he could have taken advantage of (the surprise factor).. He kind of got Carlsen rattled today.. He already had about 20 minutes advantage or something like that early in the game (and that almost never happens to Carlsen), stole the initiative from him, and Carlsen was a bit lost for ideas..

Of course the game was still far from over, but you won't get a better chance than this early in the game easily..

He probably should have continued with b6.

I don't doubt the intellectual prowess and strategy of these guys just never thought of watching it. Maybe a highlights show might work best!

There are no highlights - there is "live" and post-game analysis done by other GMs and sometimes the players themselves.

The real issue is most common observers wouldn't have a clue what was actually happening in the game!

Every game is boring before you get to know about it.. Speed chess might look more entertaining for you, e.g.:

... but even though it's obviously still (very) entertaining, it doesn't give you enough time to analyze each move, and "live" the game..

A big part of the fun is "anticipating the next move".. You start thinking what could he play next? You start thinking about the possibilities, and you make your assessment (professional analysis by IMs or GMs obviously helps too), and then see if the players follow your analysis or deviate.. There will be a lot of twists and turns, lots of surprises (you'll never guess every move correctly), which adds spice to the game, and then you get to go through the whole struggle with the players until the end result..

Obviously there are still some boring games, and some very entertaining ones (just like football), but overall it's a very enjoyable experience, if you like chess.

I think the anticipation might be too much for me. I'll stick to the darts thread. I don't mind playing chess now and then, but watching it is something different- I guess I could try and nick their opening gambits or whatever. My view of chess has been sullied by an old pervy bloke at work who carries a giant chess strategy book around with him in the pub as a conversation piece and he tries it on with women half his age, trying to look the intellectual.

Game 2 already started.

Not a repeat of game 1. Carlsen looks confident, playing quickly, and I can see Carlsen with a chance to win this game.. Carlsen looks better prepared for the opening.

Anand is on the attack now, but is he a bit over-extended?

So another (even shorter!) draw..

Game 1, reversed. (Although Carlsen was under more pressure yesterday).

Reporter asking them if they would watch Arsenal-United match ....hah!

Carlsen badly does not want to be there

I don't think anybody has played Caro-Can in a WC in a while. Disappointed here - Carlsen equalized easily, and the queen exchange was a mistake

Even if Anand kept the queens, I still think it would have been more dangerous for Anand, as he wouldn't have had a strong attack (especially with his light square bishop gone), and Carlsen's counter-attack may prove more decisive in the end.. After the first 12-13 moves I was actually happy with a draw. This was not the right game for Anand to go for the win imo.
