Chelsea 2020/21 - General discussion

Chelsea just aren’t anywhere near as bigger club as United hence why the scrutiny and criticism in the media is nowhere near. That said, they’re still a big club who’ve spent millions and there will be pressure on Lampard if he doesn’t deliver a title challenge. They don’t look like doing that at the moment so the knives could be out.

I've said this time and time again about Chelsea, they spent a fortune and they're still fielding championship players like Mount, Reece, Abraham etc. Chelsea fans on here were defending these players saying that Lampard isn't showing favouritism....but he clearly is. These players are championship players at best. Keep fielding them and you'll just keep losing to us. Why was Giroud on the bench? Why did Havertz come on so late? Baffling from Lampard.

I forgot about him.

£30+m on Drinkwater too who now plays with their development squad.

How does this vast amount of wasted money, along with wasting opportunities with De Bruyne and Salah, go unmentioned?

They've won stuff in this period, is how it has gone unmentioned?

Beats me.

Over the last 5 or so years - they've also loaned Higuain for a £7M fee, bought Morata for £60M, Bakayoko £40M, Kovacic for £40.5M, Rudiger £29M, Barkley £15M, Batshuyai £33M, Zappacosta £23M.

Wow. Just wow. Can you put this all together in one post including the money spent on Havertz and co?

Amazing seeing it like that.

Chelsea/Mourinho have been reminded constantly about KDB, Salah and also Lukaku, tbf. There was plenty of media coverage about how they fecked up with Salah and KDB in particular

You could quote yourself surely as you bring up Chelsea's spending at every chance. Why the surprised act?

I think because it's absolutely staggering what both you and city spend and waste with yourselves going under the radar in recent times given the emergence of the latter.

Probably because he isn’t that good.

I would even question that Zouma and Thiago are our best pairing for the defence.
We are still in the mode of finding our best team.

Imo they act like every fan would like to.do. ie no patience with players/managers. So before laughing at them, also consider that most people/knee jerkers over here would have done the same

Probably because he isn’t that good.

He is but he's still young.

Worth remembering likes of Drogba and Ballack took a good year to get up to speed for Chelsea, never happened for Shevchenko who was seemingly done at top level striker when he turned up so have to give some of the young lads time to settle in.

I think once Frank's spending starts to come close to Ole's we might get more flack.

I think when you spend £250m in a covid window you're going to get flak. That said it seems perhaps Frank doesn't pick who he gets so maybe the whole recruitment at Chelsea needs looking at from the world record goal keeper to the bizarre signings like Drinkwater.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Frank's spending is nearly the same amount as Ole's spending.

You're wrong.

Lampard has spent £222.48 at Chelsea.
Ole has spent £273.85 at Man United.
(both figures from Transfermarkt for consistency).

So who is included in this? Player wise. Are you not including Pulisic who came when Frank was at the club? Does Frank make the signings?

Why the feckety feck would I include Pulisic in players Lampard signed?

I might as well put Pogba in Ole's list.

Because Frank doesn't sign the players does he? No one knows. Pulisic came in when Lampard was manager. Would seem logical to include him.

Both doing a great job on a tight budget then.

Pulisic was signed long before Lampard was Chelsea manager.

He arrived in the January when Lampard was manager. Add that to the figures and Lamps has "spent" more than Ole it seems.

What else have you done to manipulate the figures I wonder!

Again, Kova came in (as a perm player) before Lampard.

Lets add Chris Sutton and Robert Fleck's fees to Lampard's total.

Ahh you're right. My apologies.

Chelsea have just spent that much is hard to keep up tbh. Along with the managerial revolving door. And Xmas Brandy

Much depends on the squad they inherited.
What would you prefer: take over at Liverpool from Klopp with 0 budget or be instead of Big Sam with 300m budget?

This. Managers coming in is an arbitrary timeframe. If we sold Pogba for 10m as soon as Ole joined it would be seen as a plus in net spend rather than the financial disaster it really would be

It's not manipulated. Here you can see the list of players signed by each manager:
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - Purchased players | Transfermarkt
Frank Lampard - Purchased players | Transfermarkt

Thank you for the source @duffer, by the way. I don't see too much difference between the two. They signed the same amount of players for the same amount of money more or less. You might want to factor in the outgoing transfers and see what happens then.

The main difference is that Ole signed those players in three different transfer windows so had the time to integrate them into the squad. Our latest additions - especially Donny van de Beek - are still finding their feet. The same applies for Chelsea, but they have to do it in the same time.

Thanks for posting. Yes little to no difference really at all.

They seized their opportunity in the market. Got a few players they otherwise might not have, likelihood is they'll eventually employ a manager that'll be able to get a team out of some of the fantastic players they have. For now lets hope sentiment convinces them to stick with Lampard. He's definitely got some managerial ability but i'm not convinced about this immediately appointing ex-managers thing. Let them put the years in elsewhere and actually achieve something with another side. If you want to compete for top trophies employing managers who've zero managerial experience in title races and deep CL runs is risky.

Cheers.

@TheReligion had a girlfriend stolen when he was younger by a bloke from Chelsea. There's no other explanation for his rabid and enthusiastic posting whenever we drop points.

I remember when it was us that used to get in the neck constantly.

I love to roll out a warm welcome to our opposition club guests here on the Caf. What can I say!
