Champions League Round of 16 (18th Feb - 8th Aug)

Congratulations to Lyon who I thought had no chance due not playing for a long time and must've been rusty.

They did play PSG last Friday in the cup final. I know PSG are pretty rusty themselves but Lyon holding them for 120 minutes suggested it wouldn't be a walkover for Juve and so it proved.

Bayern or Atletico Madrid to win the Champins League. As longas it isn't City I don't really care.

Two french teams in the quarter finals. Not bad for a farmers league.

Having seen another closer replay of the Lyon penalty i think it was actually a good call

Nice to see Rudi Garcia doing well again. I've always thought of him as a very decent manager but perhaps he underachieved a bit at Roma.

Good to see some fresh faces in QFs with Lyon, Atalanta and RB Leipzig.

I would love to see Atalanta go far.

Outside of Aguero City's attackers are far from clinical. Between Sterling, B. Silva an Jesus you're never sure what you're going to get when they are through on goal. Add the fact that they don't consistently score difficult chances due to a lack of high class ball striking it's a recipe for disaster at this level of football.

He is I think. Impressive that they won last year without him for most of the year. Then this year he is brilliant and they totally fail in the league.
In fairness I think City lost every single game KDB didn't start. Otherwise they would've been better, although liverpool still would've won the league.

At least they create a lot of chances though and their midfield on their day is superb. I don't think they'll get past Bayern though, their defense leaves a bit to be desired.

Just saw the highlights of the Lyon game. I'm sorry, but those are two awful decisions for the penalties. Unless he thinks Bernardeschi has clipped him on the first one no way is that a trip on Betancur, and Depay has his arm tucked into his side the entire time. Woof. Nine yellow cards is a sign too.

Nah, they got cucked by the 7th best team in La Liga. They rightfully took advantage of the second weakest batch of PL teams outside of Leicester's title winning season.
7th?

That's the sort of game I think not being clinical will cost them cause I expect that to be a high scoring affair. I'd back Lewa and Gnabry in front of goal over Jesus and Sterling. Neither defence is convincing and De Bruyne would need to be the difference.

So this season will finally see Simeone either win the CL or finally lose his record of only ever losing a CL knockout tie to A team carried by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yep, and he did clip him. That said the lyon player remained on his feet so there's an argument to be made he wasn't impeded enough to be a foul

Hopefully them and PSG meet in the semis.

Would love to see that play out.

At the time, Atletico were only 7th in La Liga

And finished 3rd as usual..That doesnt mean anything, United were still floating about in 5th/6th in the league for months but still progressed in Europe. We lost that game because we had no option other than to go for it to try and score 2 goals in extra time thanks to a calamity backpass from Adrian. We dominated and turned the tie around that up until that point. As for 'shocking' form since Lockdown if you included the month pre lockdown you might have had a claim but losing to Arsenal, City away and drawing to Burnley when the league was already won is just an exaggeration.

You guys have been really bad even prior to lockdown. Perhaps part of it was winning the league as early as you did but you looked completely out of gas. And progressing in Europe vs. beating an undefeated team back to back are two different things.

And this was the worst Atletico side since 2013.

Messi, Neymar, Mbappé, Cristiano, Lewandowski

Not sure about the latter 3 but the first two are better than him

Lewandowski + Messi top 2 for me this season so far. Neymar, Mbappe, Christiano, De Bruyne, Salah, Mane , Sterling around same tier maybe. Don't forget Müller and Benzema too.

They finished 3rd and were actually 5th at the time, 2 points behind Sevilla in 3rd. They are clearly 3rd best team in Spain and a top 10 team in Europe.

It will be annoying in a way to see Bayern win it. If they do, Lewandowski will definitely be instrumental to that and combined with his 34 league goals and a stellar season he would be firm favorite to finish top 3 in Ballon d’Or (should probably win it but they will never vote him above Messi, and probably not ahead of Ronaldo either to be honest). Last year he was 8th which was dumb, this year there will be no voting at all. This decision doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

I'm confused; was VAR not in operation for these games? Some absolutely shocking decisions across the two that should have been checked.

Did Dybala not get on the pitch? Imagine not playing your player of the season for the most important match of the campaign...

He was injured but they still risked him in the 2nd half only for him to aggravate the injury and come off again.
