Champions League Round of 16 (16th Feb - 17th Mar)

3 down

Now for atalanta to run us off the pitch tomorrow

If I was an Atletico supporter I'd probably chew my hand off in frustration. This sort of football is not worth the occasional big trophy :p
I'll go and support Madrid ! Don't know how they love Simeone so much.

That was a horrible, nasty challenge on James there at the end.

Its not even an occassional trophy, its like 1 league title in 7 years or something.

Tbf until 17/18 they were up against juggernauts. In england or italy they would have 3 or 4 during that time

Honeymoon period still carrying on for them then.. you just know if they had stuck with Frank they'd have probably lost this tie tonight along with a couple of their last league games. Chelsea always criticised for sackings and not giving managers time, but can't fault them for it rejuvenating the team and the rest of their season.

Giroud again proving how he is the most effective attacker Chelsea have even after spending crazy money.

100%, I don't see anything special with that Chelsea team. They will have to pray they get Dortmund-Sevilla otherwise every other team who's winning their first legs will beat them

God I'd hate to be an Atletico fan, they are just terri ble to watch.

What's the story with Giroud, is he out of contract in the summer? Chelsea have looked hopeless at times without him.

Brilliant win. Was nervous going into this one. I don’t think we honestly played that well but you couldn’t say we didn’t deserve it. Atletico hardly threatened. This is a win for football. Defensive, negative football needs to pack it’s bag and move on.

I fancy our chances against every team left in the competition bar PSG and Bayern. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Atletico could still come back in the second leg if we collapse.

What do you base that on ? Bayern are the standouts. With City next and before tonight Atleti were a feared team.

Atletico loss, Barca loss, Sevilla loss, Real Sociedad loss - Real Madrid with a difficult game tomorrow too.

Bayern the one to avoid. I'd fancy Tuchel to outsmart Poch and he would be very determined to knock PSG out after they sacked him within months of leading them to a CL final.

I have hardly watched Atletico in the last couple of years. Do they play like this week in week out? And on the rare occasion they got the ball they looked like a Sunday League team.
Simeone’s negative approach was effective in 2012-2016 and with Barca and Real being so good back then it was totally justified how they played against them. But almost a decade later when the opposition isn’t even that dangerous and their own team has some really good players, how can they play like this?

They don't, against weaker sides they're more proactive. Funny thing is they were really good in their last few games despite the poor results

But they've also consistently been really poor against any good side they faced, bar maybe real sociedad. Even in the games they won

It is truly horrible football it is even worse than anything Jose or Van Gaal could serve up.

If Simeone ever became United Manager i would quit being a fan

Didn't catch the football today, but given Bayern's relative dip the last 2 games was hoping Lazio would still be in it but alas.

Not shocked to see a low scoring game in Atletico, that one is very far from over.

Richards on CBS
AHAHHA... Asked about something HAHAHAHAH
Talking about something HAHAHAHAAH
God is he annoying as feck :annoyed:

Surprised Bayern won today. Was a fun game that still highlighted the weakness in defense for Bayern though, Lazio lacked a bit of quality in the final third at times.

Bayern could've gotten more as well, messed up a couple of counter attacks. Not fully bought on Bayern being the best in Europe yet but this was a commanding performance.

Atlético is on a bad streak. In those key weeks when they can win or lose the league and I think in this case la liga should be their priority.
Perhaps he preferred to ensure a short result, even losing and trying to regain their form in these weeks.

A terrible year for all those coefficients and league status. At least Barcelona had a 4-0, 8-2 and 4-1 in a couple of years, which is always nice
We will see if Madrid do not have one of those accidents

I realize that Bayern lack form and concentration and have a paper thin squad due to corona and injuries, but them beating Lazio is hardly a „surprise“.

Few times I’ve seen them over last 2-3 years they played exactly like this, even when it was against Alaves at home. They’d maybe try to put more pressure in the final few minutes.

I didn't watch the game and I looked up this thread to follow the news and the way you guys describe, I thought Atletico Madrid had a battering, 2-0 or 3-0 loss. Turned out they only lost 0-1 and it's also debatable if that goal they conceded was offside. Would be interesting to see if they can turn this around at Stamford Bridge. I wouldn't be surprised if they go there to win 1-0 and force the game to extra-time. Not scoring a goal is going to hurt them though, you are at home and you play for a draw. Why? Sigh.

Would we now? :D

Ok, I'll give you 17/18, sure, both PSG and Bayern got screwed pretty bad, though Bayern honestly screwed itself so much the added refereeing screwjob felt like universal harmony
You are right Bayern gifted you 2 goals on top. The year before was even more annoying. Viktor Kassai sending off of Vidal for a perfect tackle and Ronaldo scoring 2 offside goals in extra time. Daytime robbery, which luckily isn't possible anymore thanks to VAR.

You should probably watch the games then. It was a battering in all but goals scored.

Nah, with VAR in that game Vidal is off after 10 minutes and it's a parade from there

This is annoying. I reckon we could beat most teams left in the competition between two legs.
