Champions League Quarter Finals (5th - 13th Apr)

First leg at SB without fans and second leg at home. If we don't get injuries and Ancelotti doesn't screw it up we're beating them

Then City in the SF still with second leg at home

Last 2 teams to eliminate us, one after the other. It is a year for revenge
Hopefully it is, looking forward to exorcising Kyiv. Although Bayern probably feel the same about us!

Watching Liverpool equalizing our record in the league then winning their 7th CL title to extend the gap between us and them to 4 CL titles will be a sight to be hold.

And guess what. we actually deserve such humiliation.
United were 13 league titles behind Liverpool when the PL started. Did you really think when we made it 20 we’d just carry on winning forever going further and further ahead and they’d never win anything significant again?

You’re making out they’ve caught us up after years and years of shite. Literally happened the other way around.

I fancy Atletico to give City a scare

City's April - Burnley Away, A.Madrid Home, Scousers Home, A.Madrid Away, Wolves Away.

Scouse PL/CL double confirmed?

I can hardly remember the best team in their league winning the CL recently (last six years). Bayern probably. Sure wasn't Real Madrid, Chelsea or Liverpool.

That's why I think Tuchel has a strong chance.
'21 Chelsea
'20 Bayern
'19 Liverpool
'18 Madrid
'17 Madrid
'16 Madrid

Two CL/league doubles last 6 years. Argument can be made Madrid were the best side in their league in '16(most points since Zidane took over) and Liverpool lost their league literally by an inch

A lot of underrating of Chelsea here, Tuchel will ensure they give anyone a game.

It's incredibly tough to take. The way things have gone for them this season, it feels completely inevitable. I got called a 10 year old for suggesting they win all of their remaining league games, well, lets see.

It is extremely tough to take. If we were at least challenging it wouldn't be so bad. We are not.

I wonder how players like Keane etc would have felt watching this happen. I bet they wouldn't be trotting around the pitch not caring, and issuing their fake apologies on social media. I bet it would make them more determined to try and get us back to the top.

So much for a cultural reset. At this point we almost need to wipe everything currently existing and start from scratch.

I think Chelsea v Real Madrid is very evenly matched and probably the most interesting tie of the round. Looking forward to it. Love to beat them and if we have to get knocked out, I'd prefer losing to them than the two other English teams.

The strong likelihood of this happening is the main reason I just want this season to be over. The fanfare in the media and elsewhere as they edge closer, step by step, will be unbearable.

Yes ? United were a dominant force when SAF retired while Liverpool were finishing 6th, 8th and 7th. Literally no one expected them to be able to equalize the record again that quickly, in space of only 10 years from SAF retiring. In normal circumstances and with the level United and Liverpool at when SAF retired, yes, absolutely, United were expected to extend the gap in league titles even more.

This post is just the kind of defeatist mentality that spread to United fans due to the recurrent failure in recent years.

When they drew Porto and had an average Liverpool or Real in the semis? Nah.

Yeah go back and read the threads when the draws were made last season. The general consensus was we would lose to Atletico Madrid, then that we would lose to Real Madrid. Its only after the fact that people have gone back and labeled the route to the final easy.

I don't think most of the current UTD players care about anything other than a good fat contract offer.

Many people thought the same thing last season, but Chelsea somehow won it.
Nobody expected them to win it last season.
This is literally what people were saying at this stage last season.
All true but it was the COVID season. Circumstances broke perfectly for them and their depth was the difference maker

Sure. Expect a fairly even tie, but this time around things are going against them. First leg at home with no fans, second leg in a packed bernabeu, "normal" season so depth not quite that big of an advantage, a real madrid side not going through a season-long injury apocalypse, and even if they get past us, it's City over two legs with the same setup

Oh I agree and rather Madrid play them than us. They match us up so well. I think Madrid found a formula in that second half v PSG and I’d expect them to go through. Chelsea will be horrible to play though.

Defeatist mentality . Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and were always going to climb back some day. Nobody expected it to take 30 years.

You’re the one who is defeatist making out they’re the cream of English football forever. What if in 5 years we’ve got a brilliant side and steam past them again in terms of league titles? Could happen. These things are swings and roundabouts and you’re completely delusional if you just thought we were going to have it amazing forever and Liverpool were going to extend 30 years of shite to forever.

In 2013 that's precisely what most folk on here were indicating. Suggesting otherwise is rewriting history.

I think that was the general sentiment. Hard to argue with it either given your fans had just enjoyed prolonged success and probably expected that to continue.

Anyways,

City vs winner of Bayern/Liverpool CL final

Barcelona vs winner of Atalanta/Leipzig EL final

Liverpool finished last 4 years before SAF retired finishing 7th, 6th, 8th and 7th respectively, and not even playing any European competition, while United won 2 of those 4 years league tiles and losing the other two by one point and goal difference. To say anything except that the gap between United and Liverpool was expected to get bigger in the upcoming future at this point is just you wanting to comfort yourself about the current Man United situation.

I answered your question, yes, at the time of SAF retirement United was expected to win even more and extend the gap with Liverpool. Good luck finding any football fan who was expecting otherwise back then.

Atletico and Real both have games scheduled on the 10th in La Liga, UEFA are going to force La Liga to change their fixtures ? How can one of them play on the 12th too?

I smell a rat...?

It's bit of a shit draw, it seems convenient that there is only one match with 2 big teams : Chelsea v Real

It definitely is interesting how the balls always end up setting up the tastiest fixtures. I don’t think they care which particular team it is. But they definitely have a habit of it.

Bayern to win their 7th, surpassing AC Milan in leagues:UCL ratio.

Whats with no crowd at SB for the 1st leg vs Madrid. Chelsea cant afford it?

We are the biggest bottlers, West Ham beat Seville last night in the Europa league. Seville currently sit in 2nd place in la liga above 7th placed Villareal FC. We lost to Villareal FC 11-10 on penalties in The Europa final last season. We should have easily beat the low block. So now that we have been pumped and dumped out of the Champions League. We have to wait for next year if we get top 4. Hopefully Rudiger will be available for a free transfer which we should capitalise. Van de beek will likely be here next season because I don't think Pogba is signing a contract renewal. PSG are lurking who are also bottlers like us.

EU sanctions on Abramovich. If the second leg was switched I think we would be able to have fans with a new owner...

Which I guess is why UEFA seem to be against it, despite the La Liga fixtures making it look like both Atletico and Real have to play on the 13th not the 12th to prevent them having a very short recovery time from their games on the 10th...

EU sanctions.

UEFA have said all our remaining home games will be played behind closed doors.
