Champions League 24/25 | Matchday 4: November 5-6

Bayern were a total mess defensively. A very avoidable defeat. I don’t think they were three goals worse, not by a long shot, but the naivety in the set up is alarming. That’s on the coach completely. His defensive structure made no sense. Reminiscent of his struggles with Burnley last season.

The second Barca goal was a stonewall foul. How VAR hasn’t chalked that off is incomprehensible. Just what exactly is the point of VAR if they can get decisions this wrong? Also have to feel like Neuer should’ve done a lot better today. Particularly on the 4th goal. There’s no way Raphinha should be beating the keeper from there. Well placed shot, definitely, but Neuer was so slow to react. A short step to the left and dive and that’s an easy save, but he was flat flooted, expecting him to go near post I reckon. Poor, either way.

Barca deserved winners but between VAR not doing its job, and Kompany shooting his team in the foot, Bayern have ended up on the wrong end of a beating; when they really shouldn’t have.

Atlético a complete shit show today. Looking at the table sees the top three places taken by English teams. Arsenal just out of the top 8 on goal difference. Early days, but good signs for the PL. some big teams struggling in the standings right now. Bayern, PSG, Milan. Leipzig are a mess, lost 3 out of 3.

Come on, why shouldn't Bayern loose...because Barca exploited Bayern deficiencies? BTW Barca also allowed quite a lot of space in their flanks to be exploited like in the goal. Or Barca when Bayern tore them to pieces time and again they always just made some excellent defending and it was just a pure demonstration of skill and accuracy by Bayern?...I don't get the idea behind your statement, no pun intended.

More when even with Bayern not defending at their best, also has to do with the level of talent involved in the passing, the finishing, the dribbling, the managing of tempo, of fast break and pause, etc by Barca.

Regarding the foul, that was a very very very light hand on the back that always bothers, but it's typical and that could be call or not, in all of those cases the defenders always exagerate to gain a foul the moment they just feel a hand behind, nothing to bitch a lot. Also it's not a question of "feelling" that Neuer should have done better in that goal and in other plays that could have ended in goals too, HE SHOULD have done better, he was poor today and he is having many Donnaruma batshit moments for a keeper of his level and status.

In fairness Solorth missed 3 of the most blatant sitters you're ever likely to see.

But it totally changed in the second half, Simeone really messed up with whatever the hell he said at half time.

They are better than that. I would say similar to Chelsea. They knocked out Arsenal last season with ease.

Chelsea have better players all over, don't think a single Bayern player would make their team. Would be around Forest/Newcastle level in the table.

English teams have dropped 2 points from 36 so far. This format probably suits them better with their huge squads. It would be a massive surprise if they do as badly as last year once the knockouts start.

I think that is a bit silly, Chelsea's squad isn't that good, very similar to Bayern. Bayern's problem is age, it's an old team. These players in their prime would smash Chelsea.

That’s a bit harsh. Fairly sure Kane would start for Chelsea and maybe Dier in defence. Agree that it’s hard to see who else would get in though.

They were a mess defensively but it was more individual errors than the setup. Point is their board fecked up, the center backs arent good enough. Not positionally aware and dont have the speed to cover large areas. Tuchel had the same problem, they obviously need better defenders asap

In terms of full squad, Kimmich is great, Musiala is excellent, Grnaby can be very good (as Sane or Coman in a good day)...later Kane, Neuer and Muller are legends, it's true that these last two have a very bad day in the office and Neuer specially has been doing too many mistakes for his stature, yet Chelsea still it's quite disjointed and not precisly full of proven stars and a mature team either. More than names, I feel that both are too much on a grey area and Bayern needs to renovate more, won't be surpirse if they snatch Wirtz like they usually do.

I was joking. Plenty of Bayern players get in, Kane Musiala, Olisie, Kimmich, Davies, Kim/Upa (since Chelsea's CBs are horrible).

Bayern wouldn't be top obviously but easily top 4. Pool and City are clearly better.

Indeed, the first half should have end with a clear advantage and the goalas against were all quite silly, strange penalty included. BUT, Simeone it's having some sort of bad energy tarsnfer to his squad, they play great for a couple of minutes and later they become chaotic, he makes too many changes in most matches, the team has some very odd names and too many oldies that maybe have to be release, there is a bad mojo going on on Aleti since last year mostly that needs some change, even if in this game they lacked some "luck"

Feels like Atlético spend massive on strikers every year looking for the one guy who’ll score enough to let them get away with their bullshit

You’re not sure what my point is? That’s ironic because your response is gibberish. I clearly posted to point out that Bayern defeat was aided by a self inflicted wound, in their way they set up defensively. No one said anything about Barca not being allowed to exploit their weaknesses. I don’t even know what conspiracy hat that came out of.

As for the push, it’s a push while the player is airborne, plain and simple. It’s a foul.

And me saying I feel Neuer should have done better, is the same as me saying I think he should have done better, I believe he should have done better etc etc. It’s a synonym in this case.

Jesus wept.

Sigh, painful to see Neuer and Muller not being good enough in Bayern t-shirt. Very obvious their career end is approaching.

We also have a weak defense line, for years the CB's were a problem, that largely has been unaddressed.

Our wide attackers/wingers are also done, aside from Olise. And we don't have a replacement for Kane.

I don't expect Bayern to have any real shot at CL for many years. Gonna be a long team building/replacement. Hopefully we won't have too many transfer flops, or else we may be looking at a decade long of being uncompetitive at the highest level. Disappointing.

About every other year yeah. Huge amount of money and huge amount of wages. If they were United then nothing else would be talked about. Someone's track record with strikers is dreadful.

Serenity now man, I even clarify that there was no pun in my post.

I was just pointing that you are giving too much weight in the setup, while the match could also go either way for quite a stretch of it. If anything it was a very open game (leaving aside what you, me or anyone would have like a diff aproach from Bayern or not). In such an entertaing game with such great individual plays by many players, specially Barca ones, to focus that much on the set up from Bayern, it ends looking a bit too much like some sort condescendent view to the very least, even if it wasn't the intention.

Nah, he just check on him, yet indeed Kim should have made a meal of it and is the kind of play that happens the whole time in the mid and many times it's not call at al...what I mean is that it should not end in some sort of ubber controversial play at all. Leaving that play/foul aside, Neuer shouldn't have rushed himself like he did, don't know what is going on with him lately.

Serenity Now part 2...it was a tongue in cheek remark replacing the "feeling" and mostly because Neuer it's having to many fvck ups lately and even in the game itself, let's leave both Jesus out of this interaction ;)

Why is Raphinha suddenly so good?
Confidence. And maybe the new role, considering he's been consistently great since last April, when Xavi first decided to give him this sort of free role behind Lewa. Flick turbocharged the team's attack and everybody's level went up as a result

I haven’t watched any games yet under this new format. Can’t get myself excited to, but it looks like I’ve missed out on some cracking games.

What I enjoyed the most about Bayern's beatdown was the reaction of Eberl after the game. Hard to believe that an experienced individual would have such thin skin. Looks like he caught the Bayern virus rather quickly:

"It had nothing to do with the defense! This is so cheap when we concede goals to blame the defense."

The comments of Hoeness and Rummenigge days before the game (over the top praise of Kompany in contrast to nasty and passive aggressive comments towards Tuchel) sound really funny today.

Long may it continue. I'm also happy for Flick after the ridicule he received in recent years. Great manager.

He was very good at Leeds. I remember being surprised at the negative reaction from United fans when we were linked with him. Of course the talent wasn’t as obvious as yesterday, but the signs of a very good player were always there.

Atletico are a strange team. They're not plucky underdogs anymore. I don't think he will go anytime soon but Simeone has taken them as far as he can

Gnabry is way to maligned by Bayern fans. The fact that he's compared with Sane is indicative, their contributions over the years are vastly different with Gnabry being better.

He had injury problems the last couple of seasons but he's still a very good player to have. I suppose his salary might be a problem but he's less of a problem than Sane and Coman who contribute less than him.

I know that but still, Muller is dead food nowadays. He should play when games are won.
To be fair, he did create an early equalizer where Kane was offside by his kneecap. The first half was fine margins against us (this offside, the 2-1 with the shove against Kim which could have been scrapped but wasn't). Second half was actually worse, we didn't do anything anymore and that didn't change with Musiala coming on for Müller. We didn't find solutions as a team, so it's much more on the game setup than individual performances for me.
