Champions League 24/25 | Matchday 4: November 5-6 (Amorim vs 115 charges)

Anybody else ready for the absolute cringefest that is English journos making Amorims post game interview all about United, rather than Sporting and what is a memorable night for them.

Yes, dreading it. But it was such a perfect night that it won't ruin it

Good performance but yeah the result flatters them a bit. But the fact that a Portuguese team can beat City 4-1 is to be celebrated.

Oh I dunno about whether it's flattering, but the caf was so happy Van Gaal, the demolisher of Spain was coming.

That forward sporting play as a wingback is only 17. Wow, he’s so good and mature

The new format is horrible and is just there to create extra revenue through more games with more teams from 2 of the traditional big 4 (likely). There was no need for a change of format.

I'd say there was a need. The previous format was a non event with dull games that meant nothing except for one or two groups. The likes of Bayern, City and Real were winning 6 out of 6 and you have more than half the teams qualifying after round 4.

Noel Gallagher is the perfect embodiment of the insecurity of the city fans. Felt the need to mention the four in a row after the game

How did Hjulmand play?

Excellent. Him, Maxi Araújo on the left side, Quenda on the right side and a commanding Diomande performance as well.
I'd have to throw Gyokeres in there as well for a couple reasons...his work rate for a CF is remarkable, his ability to be a true target release and ability to hold up the ball was fantastic tonight. a proper CF.

standouts though clearly were the two wing backs and Hjulmand...but you can't play that 343 without quality wing backs

The funny thing is. They aren’t natural wing backs. Both players are attacking players. But both very well in attacking and defending. All about work rate

Cousins?

In so far as they look nothing like each other and cousins don't usually look like each other, from that point of view, they could be cousins.

Not sure what your point is :nervous:

Switched off with City ahead and seemingly in control.. had to check two sources to make sure I was reading the result right this morning!

Why has Alonso doubled down on Hradecky, playing him in both Europe and the league? I thought at the beginning of the season he had switched it around to install Kovar as the 1st keeper in Bundesliga while giving Hradecky Champions League?

Kovar isn't really convincing either. There are rumours we want to sign Ortega in the summer because Hradecky is very error prone and Kovar hasn't developed as we expected.

When was the last time you guys lost 4-0 or more?
From the top of my head, a 1:5 (?) against Frankfurt in late 2022 shortly after Alonso's appointment. Some wanted him fired after it ;)

Tbf so far it's been way more exciting this way

I'd say there was a need. The previous format was a non event with dull games that meant nothing except for one or two groups. The likes of Bayern, City and Real were winning 6 out of 6 and you have more than half the teams qualifying after round 4.

But isn't that the point of the early stages of any cup competition in any major sport? The early rounds are generally easier for bigger teams and therefore creates a slow buildup to the then bigger games in the latter stages involving the best performing teams. Why don't we also remove the early stages of the Carabao Cup and have a similar league style system where United can play Chelsea in October? Besides this, I don't agree with the general premise that group stages can't be exciting. Yes, not every group will be exciting but you'll always have more than a few where qualification will be determined on the last day, involving bigger clubs as well. In the past two seasons we've seen United, Milan and Barca get knocked out of the group stages.

Having so many of the bigger teams playing each other earlier will also dilute the excitement if they play again, it will be more pronounced as the seasons go by with this same format. This is besides the two bigger issues, which are more games and having 5th placed teams in the 'Champions' League.

Another annoying aspect is a lack of a second leg. Having just one match between the bigger teams, with one team having the home advantage, is a bit anti-climatic because the other team won't have the chance to play them again at their home.

agreed....the work rate for that position is absolute key. It's a bonus they are attacking minded players as that helps so much with end product but yet have the work rate of a defender

I think it helps him playing 2 DM. As he basically as the 2 wing backs plus the front 3 all attacking. But ye if we use the same tactic he’s going to have to work on Garnacho/Amad on defending. If of course he’d use them 2 in them positions. I think it will suit us using them 2 in games where we expect to dominate.

A couple of sequences with consecutive chances for Brugge to score against Villa, they must wake up
