Chain Draft (Main Thread)

No because Kohler at 7th pick is definitely legit
I'm still baffled as to why EAP didn't pick him. When I looked at the 80s my preferred path was Brehme (for RB) and on to Kohler. The problem was which of the many Kohler options to go for next.

Just to echo what MJJ said, I most certainly would not be averse to spending 30m or so on that Dortmund teenage version of the player who is now at Bayern, the Liverpool player now at City, a young Evertonian who went to United after a cracking Euro 2004 etc. Those are the type of youngsters who've exhibited both potential and an already impressive level of talent currently, to demand such prices. That would be the upgraded F1 version of Wenger's policy of buying the creme of the crop youngsters. Right now I just get the feeling we are paying a F1 premium price for what would be a Wenger type of youth player by the looks of things. You do have a point that we are rich and it wouldn't really matter that much (relative to most other clubs) if he flops as we are a cash making machine but it just feels a bit off to me.

I wouldn't mind, say, Sterling either (but that was impossible for several reasons), but he's in a different category to begin with: On the radar to a very different degree. What we should be aiming for is, basically, Fergie's old scheme: Get the next Ronaldo in. It will take some flops, semi-flops and Nanis - but it's the sort of scheme we could actually go for with our wealth, and it's a much more worthy one (in my opinion) than going down some kind of pseudo Galactico path, paying obscene amounts for the likes of Di Maria (who are also gambles at the end of the day).

Have you watched him play a lot? I've not seen anything to suggest he's got the talent of a Ronaldo or anything close to that level. His major strength is that he's very well rounded, his dribbling isn't great but for a striker it is good, his link up with teammates is very good, his off the ball runs looks like his strongest asset. I've only seen him play when he's played PSG though and the compilations.

But it seems like you are vastly overrating his potential, even Nani had world class speed and dribbling from the day we signed him and he wasn't bought for sums anywhere near these, even in with the market value changes in mind.

I think you've misunderstood my point.

I'm not singing his praises or claiming he's bound to become a world beater. I'm outlining a general strategy. As far as his particular potential goes, I think he fits the bill of a young player with huge potential, largely unfulfilled, and I'm finding it significant that LVG is willing to bring him in for that kind of money.

I've seen him on a few occasions, and he's looked very good. Overrating his potential isn't something I can legitimately be accused of, since I haven't actually said a word about it. I trust LVG's judgment on that.

 I wonder if Terry/Lampard would be enough to kill the vote magnet that his team is.
Ashley Cole is also great in these drafts. He is like Maldini-lite, he shut out Ronaldo a couple of times so no other winger of the same tier or below stands a chance. Those in higher tier are banned anyway.

Yeah, at the end of the day, I just hope LVG/scouting team know something that we muppets don't.

I think you are too caught up in that 'some players don't want to join us in this state'. Even Silva, Toure and Aguero joined City when they were no big guns. If media reports are true then our plan to get a big signing in Bale or Muller has been baffling. It would be much more prudent to try for likes of Rues, Griezmann with big money. A club like Athletico Madrid almost always sells if they receive a mega-bid. Likes of Madrid, Bayern, Barca would almost never sell.

Right enough. That's crazy. I thought everyone somehow just ended up avoiding him, unable to quite link in the greatest man-marker of all. What a gift that is for MJJ and Crappy.

Ahh then I agree. I think that is a better strategy than buying ready made world class players nonstop.

I'm not caught up in that at all. I'm genuinely interested in us buying under-the-radar players with potential rather than players who are established to the degree Reus is.

But with our current status and situation, the idea that we're at a disadvantage when it comes to signing a certain category of players is hardly outlandish - for that matter.

They never played with each other though and he couldn't use the nationalteam card that early, right?

That...is key. Of course.

My basic idea is that LVG is better at judging how a certain player will look three or four years down the line than yours truly. Beyond that, anything could happen. Like I said to begin with, it's a gamble. But it's a gamble which makes sense as a strategy for a club in our situation. Or so I think.

The route was Brehme-Aganthaler-Kohler .

That's why I was so surprised earlier when he went Brehme-Aganthaler-Effenberg

We were planning on linking him with forster but they never played together ( a few months apart in the NT)

Having picked Augenthaler before, progression through Bayern is ruled out. I considered him and wanted to move towards Del Piero > Nedved, but Tuppet put paid to that. No may other options that interested me that route.

Edit: I'd already used 3 50s and 2 60s quota by then, so not much room to move around too!

Oh fair enough, that makes more sense.

Nah, my bad, got this mixed up with another German chain. Someone who links to Kohler directly and 4-5 other favourties of mine. Surprised he isn't gone and whoever gets him has an absolutely cracking link for reinforcements.

Well you know what they say.. Pat_Mustard and wow go hand in hand.

I'll pick Helmut Haller, the Germany playmaker who played a season at Juve with Dino Zoff.
