Martial right? Cant believe we are spending that much on him.

It's bizarre. Quite a few were mocking City for spending 44 (or is it 49m) on Sterling, calling him a typical overpriced English player blah blah blah but now we are spending 36m (plus add ons if reports are to be believed) on a relatively unknown teenager, who's only had one full season in a relatively weak French league and still doesn't have a single international cap. There is paying for potential and there is this. It's just unbelievable and the pressure is going to be immense on him right from the start...

Apparently the fee will rise to 80 million euro eventually! Thats crazy money, can easily get a reus/griezmann for that price. I mean city spent less of kdb ffs

Aaaaand Bayern get Kingsley Coman for a 2 year loan with the option of signing him for 15m... I must sound like a right moaning twat right now and we've had a great transfer window so far but this one just seems way ott.

Names! Im working on a chain that way.

I don't even care about the expenditure tbf, just as long as it makes sense to a certain extent. If we paid that 40-50m on that Atleti forward, then fair enough but this :wenger:

This is the least attention I've paid to the end of a transfer window in years. I'm glued to this thread, praying that my beautiful chain isn't torn apart for the 11th time in 8 rounds!

every transfer window is the same, we have a great one until one point when we make some major feck up.....

me to, if we overpayed Reus/Muller or some top class talent i wouldn't mind it but when we pay so much money for potentially good player im pissed....

Do you actually know him? I've no clue how good he is, don't think I've ever seen him play. Is he really considered a great talent? Sorry for derailing this thread, but I didn't start ;).

Also, United doesn't deserve better until they finally cut all ties with Mendes. He's a poison to football, I don't get why United let that guy control so many transfers. It almost looks like Woodward is totally useless and therefore relies on Mendes exploiting him to get something done at all.

I would say coman is on a similar level to martian if not better. Took a bit of time to settle in at juve hence the lack of appearances, is very quick, exceptional dribbler has good vision and work-rate. Kinda raw right now so will probably take a year to settle but should shine eventually.

Totally agree with that. The angle now is that "Mendes helped get the transfer over the line so now United will agree to let De Gea go".

Oh? So Mendes helped us spend 50mil on a 19 year old who was joint 16th top scorer in Ligue1 last year so now we'll do him a favour and let our world class keeper go on the cheap? Nice one.

We were doing well in this window until this panic move late on. At one point it seemed we would buy Otamendi and Pedro, which would have caped off our best transfer window in a decade maybe.

Actually, I think this IS paying for potential. Which is always a gamble. But United are loaded. The challenge for us is finding a way to exploit our wealth. We can't do the latter by chasing players who'd rather play for Barca or Real - so we need to come up with something else: An upgraded, Formula 1 version of Wenger's old "spend on youth" scheme at Arsenal. I think that's the way to go. Sure, the lad might flop - but then again he might not. And then we're laughing.

Yeah I dont get this at all, how exactly is mendes helping us in this deal. Would have made sense if we were getting him cheaper but thats not the case as well.

Was discussing this with stain as well yesterday, if we had signed otamendi, pedro and someone like ibra our team would have been sorted for the next few years. All achievable targets as well.

For this price we need to target players like sterling, kdb, calhanoglu, costa, laporte, marquinhos or even fekir from the same league. Young players who have already performed at a high level for a season or two. Whats the point in paying that much for someone who has barely had a good few months? Kane is more proven than him which says it all.

Not really mate, just seemed like an apt comparison given both are 19 year old promising French teenagers who don't have a single international cap yet. Just that the price/deal seems acceptable/reasonable for one of them and outrageous for another. Agreed with your second point.

We were doing well in this window until this panic move late on. At one point it seemed we would buy Otamendi and Pedro, which would have caped off our best transfer window in a decade maybe.

This too. Even with the Martial transfer, we've still had an excellent transfer window overall but I can't for the life of me understand this deal.

Actually, I think this IS paying for potential. Which is always a gamble. But United are loaded. The challenge for us is finding a way to exploit our wealth. Just to echo what MJJ said, I most certainly would not be averse to spending 30m or so on that Dortmund teenage version of the player who is now at Bayern, the Liverpool player now at City, a young Evertonian who went to United after a cracking Euro 2004 etc. Those are the type of youngsters who've exhibited both potential and an already impressive level of talent currently, to demand such prices. That would be the upgraded F1 version of Wenger's policy of buying the creme of the crop youngsters. Right now I just get the feeling we are paying a F1 premium price for what would be a Wenger type of youth player by the looks of things. You do have a point that we are rich and it wouldn't really matter that much (relative to most other clubs) if he flops as we are a cash making machine but it just feels a bit off to me.

Joga you need to be careful which thread you are posting in man...

. Might as well have something to discuss given the pace of the draft tbf.
